In recent years our focus has been on Nagarote’s most disadvantaged children and youth. n Impacting 185 severely disadvantaged teens by providing positive alternatives to gangs, drugs and crime through education, community service, sports and job training. Activities include classes in computers, English, art, sewing, theater, and martial arts as well as workshops on health, environment and healthy lifestyle choices. Many of our college scholarship students serve as program staff and tutors. n Sustainable Agriculture and Urban Reforestation Program As part of their community service, project teens created a tree nursery and grew more than 20,000 trees over four years. The tree nursery morphed into a sustainable farm where they’ve harvested more than a ton of fresh produce which greatly improves their diet. n Small Business Loans Through SosteNica We encouraged our partner, micro-lender SosteNica, to make small business loans in Nagarote, creating jobs in an area with doubledigit unemployment. In 2011, we built our Community Center which has become a hub for Project activities. It is known throughout Nagarote as “Norwalk.” We have a full time paid Field Director based in Nagarote and a staff including program manager, accountant, bookkeeper, agronomist, farmers, teachers, and coordinators. We work closely with other NGOs in the area including Peace Corps Volunteers and SosteNica. We welcome the assistance of volunteer interns and have a long-standing working relationship with various government agencies that operate there. VISITING NAGAROTE Delegations of visitors to Nagarote are a vital part of Sister City work. Our board makes an annual trip in late winter and we encourage anyone interested to join us. During the visit we get to know more about the Project, take the kids on an excursion, join local events and tour the region. It is, for most people, a life-changing experience and one not to be missed. YOU R ROL E Your support makes it possible for the most disadvantaged children of Nagarote to reach their potential and realize their dream of a brighter future.
