Aeration: Upgrading Your Lawn Top to Bottom
EARLY
FALL
TIME TO PLAN
FOR PRUNING
Summer’s extreme conditions
have an effect on every
landscape. Now is the
time to assess any damage
drought or storms may have
caused and put together a
plan for repair.
Aeration: Upgrading Your Lawn
Top to Bottom
Once the cool, crisp weather of fall is upon us, it is easy to forget about the dog days of summer. It is
important to remember how taxing the heat and drought of the past season was on your lawn – and to
take steps now to repair any damage.
Fall is the perfect time to rejuvenate a tired or stress-damaged lawn that is showing the effects of a hot,
dry summer. Signs that your lawn needs repair include dead or thin patches of turf, grass that feels
spongy or soft when walked across, and an abundance of broadleaf weeds.
If your lawn is experiencing any of these symptoms,
core aeration or seeding – or a combination of both – is
recommended this fall. Even an overall healthy-looking lawn
should be aerated every year to maintain a thick turf and a
strong root system.
There is a lot of talk about
rehabilitating your lawn
this time of year, but it is
important not to forget
about your landscape’s
biggest investments – trees
and shrubs.
If certain limbs have died
or been damaged by high
winds or drought, fall is the
perfect time to prune. Even
if you don’t see any damage,
it is good to include pruning
as part of regular landscape
maintenance.
Trees and shrubs do a lot of
growing during the summer
months, and once their
leaves fall, it is easy to see
where they need to be
cut back.
If you know of any damaged
or overgrown elements of
your landscape, be sure
to schedule a pruning
assessment this season.
Core aeration is the process of removing thousands of small
plugs of turf and soil from your lawn. This is done with a special
machine but is a simple and highly recommended treatment.
The benefits are many:
• Breaks up thatch layer
• Loosens soil to allow for more root growth
• Allows air, moisture, and fertilizer to more
easily enter the soil
• Mixes soil into turf as the plugs break down
Aeration also creates the perfect opportunity to sow new seed. As
the aerator removes the small plugs of turf and soil, it creates fresh
holes for new seed to find. This increases the amount of seed in
direct contact with soil, which greatly helps the new grass germinate.
Even an overall healthy-looking
lawn should be aerated every
year to maintain a thick turf
and a strong root system
With core aeration and seeding, fall is the prime time. The cooler temperatures prevent seeds from
being scorched, and there is less competition from new weeds. Aeration produces a more robust turf
overall, and your lawn will come out of winter’s dormant months in better shape next year.
Be sure to let us know if you’re ready to take advantage of all the benefits aeration and seeding have
to offer!
