The IM -NET Integration Module is an interface device for
digital music services and local network music. It installs into
the card cage on an IntelliControl ® ICS Modular MultiZone
Receiver and accesses digital music two ways:
1) O ver the local area network from shared music servers.
2) From the Internet.
The
IM -NET
Integration
Module
provides
metadata
information (such as artist, album and song title) to the user
interfaces that have a display. The card has cascade audio
outputs to allow expansion to additional IntelliControl ICS
Modular MultiZone Receivers in expanded systems. Up to
six IM -NET Integration Modules can be used in a single
system to provide multiple streams of digital music.

INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS
The IM-NET Integration Module must be connected to the customer’s home network.
This network must have broadband Internet access to play music from Internet
services.
Network Requirements
The home network bandwidth must be sufficiently robust to support the number
of installed IM-NET Integration Modules. Internet music services typically require
a bandwidth of around 160 kbps (kilobits per second), and may go as high as
320 kbps. Therefore six simultaneous streams (the maximum number of IM-NET
Integration Modules that can be installed) could require up to 1.92 Mbps (Megabits
per second). Make sure your customer has sufficient bandwidth available to
accommodate the number of installed IM-NET Integration Modules. Remember, the
home network may be shared with many other devices (PCs, laptops, video game
consoles, etc.) competing for bandwidth. If the available bandwidth is exceeded,
the performance of the IM-NET Integration Modules may be impaired and the music
may dropout, stutter or unexpectedly jump to another music station.
We recommend verifying that the customer’s Internet service is sufficient to handle
the bandwidth requirements of the system and that it is fully functional before
connecting the IM-NET Integration Module(s). Connect a laptop to the home network
and go to www.speakeasy.net/speedtest to verify download bandwidth capability.
Music Servers
The IM-NET Integration Module accesses music files from any DLNA (Digital Living
Network Alliance) compliant device running a UPnP AV media server configured
to share its files. UPnP media servers are devices that store and share digital media
such as photographs, movies, or music. These media servers use the Universal Plug
and Play (UPnP) protocols to communicate with other devices. UPnP AV media
servers can automatically stream a file to the IM-NET Integration Module for local
playback when requested. Since the media servers discussed in this guide will only
be used for music (audio), the term music server will be used from here on.
There are UPnP music servers available for most operating-systems and many
hardware platforms. UPnP music servers can either be categorized as softwarebased or hardware-based. Software-based UPnP music servers can be run on PCs
(Personal Computers), mainly on Microsoft Windows®, Linux®, BSD®, Unix® or Mac®
OS X. Windows Media Player ® and TwonkyMedia are examples of software based
UPnP music servers. Hardware-based UPnP music servers may run on NAS (Network
Attached Storage) devices or any specific hardware for delivering media, such as a
PVR (Personal Video Recorder).
5
IM - NET

INSTALL
GUIDE
INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS
Every UPnP music server on the home network to be accessed by the IM-NET
Integration Module must be shared on the network. Please note that the name
of the UPnP music server that will appear on the user interfaces is the name
generated by the music server itself. For easier recognition on user interfaces,
we recommend renaming all music servers with “Friendly Names.” Refer to each
server’s documentation for information on sharing and renaming.
Playing iTunes Music Library Files
Playing music files from an iTunes library requires that a software-based music
server be set up to share the iTunes files.
The recommended method is to install the Niles Music Server for iTunes, a small
music server application powered by TwonkyMedia. The Niles Music Server is
installed using the Admin Utility. See “Opening The Admin Utility” on Page 13.
If the iTunes library is hosted on a shared network storage device, it is likely that
the device has an embedded UPnP music server; therefore installing the Niles
Music Server may not be necessary as the iTunes music will already be available
from the embedded server.
Another option is to share the iTunes library with a media server such as Windows
Media Player (WMP). The music files from the iTunes library will be served to the
IM-NET via WMP. Please note that each time new music is added to the iTunes
library, WMP must be updated.
Playing Music from Internet Services
To access Internet music services such as Pandora®, Rhapsody ®, SiriusXM, and
Internet radio, a broadband Internet connection is required.
Some of these services require a subscription and/or require the user’s account
to be linked specifically to the IM-NET Integration Module. The user’s account
information must be entered in the IM-NET using the Admin Utility before it can
access the services.
The user’s account information is managed using the IM-NET Admin Utility
(See “Opening the Admin Utility” on page 13).

again. This verifies that all system software is up to date. Go to:
www.intellicontrol.com/ICS/downloads.php for the latest information.
Installing the IM-NET into the GXR2 Card Cage
Before making any connections to the IM-NET Integration Module, always turn
the power OFF on the GXR2 MultiZone Receiver and be sure the AC line cord is
disconnected. The IM-NET is susceptible to static discharge; use a grounding strap
or touch an earth ground prior to picking up the IM-NET. Handle the card by its
edges only.
1. C
arefully slide the IM-NET module into any available card slot, making sure it is
aligned with the GXR2 card cage guides.

PROVIDED (OR PROHIBITED) BY APPLICABLE LAW, EVEN IF NILES HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY
OF SUCH DAMAGES.
Notwithstanding the above, if you qualify as a “consumer” under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, or applicable state
laws, then you may be entitled to any implied warranties allowed by law for the Warranty Period. Further, some states do
not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts or allow the exclusion or limitation of consequential damages,
so such limitations may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights
which vary from state to state.
