DOUBLE
DRIVEL
Into The
Outdoors
With Dick and Mike
By Chris Henderson
Mike’s Commentary
Commentary: Last week, one of the biggest fears
of the Pittsburgh Steelers and their fans was realized when
Ben Roethlisberger went down with a knee injury that will
likely keep him sidelined for 4 -6 weeks. Michael Vick, making
his first start as a Steeler in replacement of Big Ben, performed
adequately enough to win against Pittsburgh’s biggest rival,
the Baltimore Ravens. However, I think that Steelers fans are
now coming to the conclusion, that it is was Shawn Suisham’s
injury, and not that of Roethlisberger, that may be the biggest
hindrance to the team’s success this year. Suisham’s pinpoint
accuracy is definitely being missed as replacement Josh
Scobee is only 6 for 10 through 4 games and only 3 for 7 from
over 40 yards. After Scobee failed on two field goal attempts
in the final minutes of regulation against the Ravens that
would have all but guaranteed a Steelers win, it is hard to
blame Coach Tomlin for being gun shy in overtime.
Mike Likes: Steelers at Chargers: The Steelers usually
underperform when going to the West Coast, but, they are
typically good on Monday night’s. The extra rest will help this
week. And it would probably help if Josh Scobee conveniently
missed the team flight to San Diego. Steelers 19 Chargers 17.
Dick’s Thoughts
Hopefully the Pirates don’t have any of their key players
having scheduled days off this Thursday. The Bucs have had
a great season but some of Clint Hurdle’s lineups certainly
have to be questioned. Let’s just hope he doesn’t decide to
start Sean Rodriguez at shortstop against the Cubs.
The Cardinals won 100 games this year. Since the wildcard
came into play 21 teams have won 100 or more. Here is good
the good news for Pirates fans only 2 of the 21 have won the
World Series.
Steeler fans have to hold their breath every time Michael
Vick is touched. The Black and Gold is one hit away from
Landry Jones. Quarterback play is so bad in the NFL that the
Steelers are considering bringing back Charlie Batch.
Jeff Reed, Matt Bahr, Roy Gerela, and Norm Johnson should
have all received calls from the Steelers GM after Josh Scobee’s
performance against the Ravens. It’s hard to believe the
Steelers gave up a draft pick for him.
Looking at the Steelers schedule after San Diego they have
Arizona, Kansas City, and Cincinnati on the horizon. IF they
can somehow win 2 out of the 4 they should be OK.
The Penguins open their season this year. The Pens should
score a ton of goals this year but their defense is questionable
at best. Lots of high scoring affairs and shootouts for Penguin
fans this year, but I think another year without the Cup.
Calipari and Kentucky will be loaded once again in basketball as Coach Cal has commitments from 6 5-Star recruits.
USC is really cracking down on their football team. The
Trojans recently announce that beer is now banned in their
locker room.
Thought of the week: You don’t stop having fun when you
get old; you get old when you stop having fun.
Dick’s Picks
Virginia @ PITT: Virginia is a disappointing again this year
and Coach Mike London will soon be former head coach London. If Pitt has any running backs left they should win this
one. PITT 24 Virginia 16
STEELERS @ San Diego: Monday night football is usually
kind to the Steelers. Vick will have a week to get ready and
Phillip Rivers is overrated. Run the ball effectively and the
Black and Gold will come home winners. STEELERS 14

Friday
riday,, October 9th: 4:00 PM ‘til Sold Out
By: Tony Rossi, Director of Communications, The Christophers
Well, it’s October. How fast the summer flew by! While we
do get some nice days in October, we can, for the most part,
say goodbye to them for awhile. For most of us, the shorts
and flip-flops are working their way to the back of the closet,
while the heavier clothes, like an insidious little army, are
moving to the front. The air conditioning no longer comes
on, but the furnace does. Boats in backyards are filling up
with leaves. While some leaves are still green, they no longer
have the luster of life about them. Death of nice weather is in
the air.
From amidst all of this gloom, however, a few good things
are emerging. As mentioned in an earlier column, some great
fishing action is getting underway. The autumn leaves are
beautiful. There’s no debating that. The focus of this week’s
column, though, is squirrel hunting. This is my very favorite
form of the sport. It’s sort of like the panfishing of hunting.
In most years, squirrels are plentiful, and not all that hard to
hunt. They are found close to home for most of us, and outfitting for squirrel hunting is simple and relatively cheap. On
top of everything else, just like panfish, the little critters are
really tasty.
There are essentially two ways to go about hunting for squirrels. The first, a personal favorite of mine, is to just head into
the woods, pick out a likely looking spot and sit down. Be as
quiet as you can during the whole process. Keep a sharp
lookout for squirrels. Don’t forget to look behind you. If you
see one in the distance, try your best to resist the temptation
to get up and go after it. Most of the time, this will end in
failure. Let them come to you. If you have a call and know
how to use it, this is the ideal situation for that. If, after a
reasonable amount of time, you haven’t gotten any shooting,
quietly get up and move to a new location. The best times for
this are morning and evening.
An added benefit of this type of hunting is the wildlife you
get to see while doing it. While sitting for squirrel, I’ve had
deer, turkeys, foxes and porcupines, to name a few, pass by
very close to me. The weather is usually fairly warm, and
there is actually something to be said for the golden days of
autumn.
The other method of squirrel hunting is known as still hunting or stalking. With this one, you move quietly through the
woods, stopping for a few minutes to look for game before
moving on. In my experience, the only time this method
works very well at all is when the leaves are wet or the wind is
blowing, thereby either allowing you to move quietly or covering up the sound of your movement.
Squirrels do indeed make for some great eating. First, however, you have to clean them, and that can be a bit of a challenge. The guts are pretty foul, and the skin can be really hard
to remove. Personally, I have never found an easy way to
clean squirrels. The best one I’ve found is to cut a slit in the
skin in the middle of the back. Get a couple of fingers of each
hand into the slit and pull in opposite directions. If everything goes right, the skin will come off in two pieces. Then,
you can remove the entrails and cut the squirrel up. It’s a
good idea to soak them overnight in a mild salt, vinegar and
water solution before cooking or freezing them. In the future, we’ll look at some specific recipes.
Harvest Festival in
Nickleville - October 17th
The Nickleville Presbyterian church will hold their
Annual Harvest Weekend on
October 17 and 18 at the
church in Nickleville. On Saturday, October 17th from 4 6 pm there will be a public
pork and sauerkraut supper
in Weaver Hall. Menu will include all those fall favorites of
pork and sauerkraut, mashed
potatoes, stuffing balls,
applesauce, and a vast dessert buffet. There will be
door prizes and plans are underway for a "silent auction"
of gifts. The meal will be
served buffet style and you

Considering that Amanda
Berry and Gina DeJesus were
kidnapped, held hostage, and
repeatedly sexually assaulted
by Cleveland school bus
driver Ariel Castro for 10
years, it might seem odd that
they named their memoir
“Hope.” But that word perfectly describes these two
young women who endured
more darkness than most of
us can fathom by relying on
their faith in God and the light
that was brought into their
lives by Berry’s daughter
Jocelyn, a child of her rape by
Castro.
Berry and DeJesus (and a
third hostage, Michelle
Knight) were all over the
news two years ago when
they finally escaped from
Castro’s house of horrors.
They recently co-authored
their memoir with help from
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Mary Jordan and Kevin
Sullivan (who were Christopher Award winners for their
2006 book “The Prison Angel:
Mother Antonia’s Journey
from Beverly Hills to a Life of
Service in a Mexican Jail”). Jordan and Sullivan joined me on
“Christopher Closeup” to discuss this horrific, yet ultimately inspiring story.
Berry and DeJesus were just
16 and 14 when Castro lured
them into his home (months
apart) under the guise of visiting his daughter, who they
knew from school. In Berry’s
case, he chained her to a pole
in his cold, dark basement
where he abused her every
day. Yet Berry refused to let
her spirit be crushed because
she believed that God had a
different plan for her.
Authors Jordan and Sullivan
explained that Berry “found a
candle with a picture of Jesus
on it in the basement, and she
would light it and pray. She
also found a drawing of Jesus.
She put it up beside her bed in
the room [to which Castro
moved her], and it became a
source of strength and hope.”
The environment in the
house changed when Berry
became pregnant with
Jocelyn. She saw the new life
inside her as a sign of hope,
and it bonded her with
DeJesus and Knight, who
were also able to find joy in
this innocent child. Surprisingly, Jocelyn changed Castro
as well. Sullivan said, “The
baby made him happier, and
when he was happier, everyone was happier.”

old Jocelyn opened the door
to Berry’s room and said,
“Daddy’s gone.” Berry
couldn’t believe it. In 10 years,
he had never left the house
with the bedroom doors unlocked. Berry ran downstairs
and, with the help of passersby, got out and called for
help. The three girls finally
achieved their long-awaited
freedom. The authors noted,
“One of the first things Gina
did when she got out, she
went to church, lit a candle,
and said a prayer for all the
other missing girls [in the
world].”
In the two years that have
passed, Castro committed
suicide while in jail. Berry and
DeJesus, on the other hand,
are full of optimism. Jordan
and Sullivan said, “You can
come out of difficult things
either bitter and broken—or
hopeful. They are happy to
be young and free…They’re
going to finish high
school…Gina is going to go
to New York, and she hopes
one day she can have a little
store selling clothes. Amanda
had a gift for teaching. And
both of them want to be advocates for other missing kids.”
In addition, the authors describe Jocelyn as “beautiful
and vibrant and smart. I think
Amanda said, ‘I’m not looking
as though she is [Castro’s]
child. She is my child.’ And she
is. They’re extremely close
and Jocelyn is a marvelous, infectiously-happy little girl. It’s
one of several miracles of this
story.”

The Knox Mayor’s Report
September was the BOMB
here in Knoxerland! It’s been
a fantastic month living the
dream here in Knox Pa. We
couldn’t have had better
weather this month with cool
temps and sun galore. We almost need some rain now to
keep our water wells full with
copious amounts of good
clean
cheap
Knox
Water........Ha!
CATS CATS CATS.......... I
love cats, MEOW! My
neighbor’s cats are super
friendly and they keep the
yard mole population down.
BUT - Knox has more than its
fair share of STRAY cats running around & not everyone
wants other people’s cats, or
stray cats running on their
property. We have an ordinance that protects our residents against someone’s cat
running around on their
property. Owners & lovers of
domestic cats should always
be responsible to do the humane things with these pets.
Have them neutered, get them
their shots.....and love your
cat. You can tell when your
cat may be out running too
far in the neighborhood & getting into something at the
neighbors ......Please be cognizant of where your cat (or
cats) may be if you leave them
outside.
There’s a fine line between
a domestic cat & a stray cat.
Once they appear to be
STRAY cats, they are in jeopardy of not returning home to
you.
I can tell you, a couple of
borough residents recently
gathered up some 27 stray
cats running around up
across the western side of
Knox. They took them away

out to farms; at least that’s the
story I got. I don’t know if any
of these cats were Feral, or
where they are coming from.
We do know many of them
are unwanted cats that
people are dropping off up
at Peanut Park.
The bottom line here is, IF
you own a cat in Knox, and
you chose to leave it outside
running wild without supervision for extended periods of
time, YOUR cat may also disappear and be taken away.
We would encourage all that
have cats to be responsible cat
owners and take care of those
cats you love........
I –80 I-80 I-80 .........We have
had our fair share of vehicle
traffic being redirected
through Knox this year with
the construction (and
wrecks) out there on the Interstate Highway. What a
drag this has become! We certainly wish they would run the
traffic over across SR38 to
US322 (or vice versa) instead
of running it through lovely
downtown Knox Pa, but it
doesn’t seem like that’s going
to happen. Hopefully the
road construction out there is
about over? It seems to me
that some of those wrecks are
caused by the construction.
We will always be seeing
some I-80 traffic from trucks
coming through town, running around the scale house,
and or anytime there’s a
wreck out there. Please be
careful when our town fills up
with I-80 traffic. It’s frustrating this year, it seems like it’s
at an all-time high....Hopefully
it settles down!
DUNG
DUNG
DUNG........Over the past year
I’ve been getting complaints
from many Knox residents
about horse dung being scattered on our streets around
town. At the present time we
do NOT have an ordinance
requiring the owners & operators of horses, to clean up
the discharge dung their
horses lay down. Many residents believe we need to draft
up an ordinance to address
this issue. IF you feel an ordinance needs to be put into
by Frank Agnello
place, please talk to any of the
Knox Borough Councilors
and let them know how you
feel on this issue. I would remind everyone that ONLY the
Knox Borough Councilors
have authority to legislate borough law.
I certainly believe Knox
Borough should have an ordinance in place dealing with
this issue. Years ago it was a
NON issue, and that’s probably why it’s never been addressed. We are in different
times these days with much
more horse & buggy traffic
traveling across our borough
streets daily. While we welcome anyone & everyone to
use the streets of the borough, those people with
horses need to be responsible
and clean up after the messes
that may be scattered about.
Take note from the dog owners in Knox Borough. People
who are out walking their
dogs in Knox are VERY good
about cleaning up after their
dog leaves dung down. I see it
daily, the dog owners all carry
bags around & they clean up
after their pets. Horse owners
should be required to do the
same. Nuff said on dung in
Knoxerland!
F O O D S T O C K
2015.......Thanks to all the
Knox residents who participated in the Clarion County
Foodstock Drive. Thanks also
to Keystone SMILES for distributing and collecting the
Foodstock bags around
Knox. The Clarion Area
Chamber says THANKS too!
Those donated items will be
used to replenish the Clarion
County Food Banks. They use
the stock up every year, it’s a
great thing they do with the
county food banks and Knox
is always part of this
effort......Thanks to all!
Here comes OCTOBER!
The leaves will be changing;
it’s always a fantastic time of
the year! Halloween will be
coming up, let’s keep it safe
out there for all those ghosts
& goblins that will be running
around town later this month.
From KNOX PA,
Mayor Frank A.................
