Pithole Lantern Tours”
On Friday, October 2 and
Saturday, October 3, Drake
Well Museum and Park and
the Friends of Drake Well,
Inc. will host Pithole Lantern
Tours, the final event celebrating the 150th anniversary of Pennsylvania’s legendary oil boomtown. Gates
open at 6:00 p.m. at the
Pithole Historic Site located at
14118 Pithole Road just off
Route 227 near Plumer, PA.
Admission is $8.00 for adults
and $5.00 for youth (3-11
years). Be sure to save with

According to Museum Site
Administrator Melissa Mann,
the highlight of Pithole Lantern Tours will be a nighttime
living history tour of the
boomtown. Throughout the
tour, visitors will meet different petroleum history characters and listen to colorful stories about historic Pithole
City. “This is a unique opportunity for folks to experience
Pithole and oil history in a
completely different way.
When visitors step out onto
the dark, quiet grounds, they
will be taking a step back in
time,” said Mann.
Tours will begin at 6:30
p.m. and depart every 10
minutes. Each evening’s final
tour will depart at 9:30 p.m.
Tickets will be sold until the
final tour is full. Tours will last
approximately 1.5 hours and

Commentary: Last week was a good week for the
Mike’s Commentary
Pittsburgh Pirates. After losing 4 in a row, the Pirates won 6 in
a row. In doing so, they clinched their 3rd straight playoff
berth, won their 10,000th game in franchise history, and Mark
Melancon set the single season Pirates mark for saves. The
Pirates had lost the last 3 of a 4-game series to the Cubs and
the 1st game to the Los Angeles Dodgers before reeling off 2 in
a row against the Dodgers and sweeping the Colorado Rockies
in a 4-game set. In doing so, the Pirates joined only the Giants,
Cubs, Braves and Dodgers as the only teams to win 10,000
games. Melancon zipped past Mike Williams’ single season
mark of 46 saves and, after his save against the Rockies last
Thursday, was at 50 for the year. Let’s hope the Pirates can
carry this momentum into the playoffs.
—Baseball lost one of its true legends when Yogi Berra
passed last week. He won 10 World Series rings as a member
of the New York Yankees and was a 3-time winner of the
American League MVP. However, he may have been best
known for his Yogi-isms
Mike Likes: Ravens at Steelers: As Yogi Berra said, “It’s déjà
vu all over again”. Here we go again with another Ravens/
Steelers showdown. This one is at Heinz Field so I take the
Steelers, 27 – 24.
Pittsburgh at Virginia Tech: Yogi says, “It ain’t over ‘till it’s
over”. The problem is, though, that this one may be over before it is started. Tech hung tough with Ohio State. Pittsburgh
edged Youngstown State. I think I will go with the Hokies.
Virginia Tech 34 Pittsburgh 13.
Army at Penn State: This is a David versus Goliath type of
game. Penn State already lost to one David this year in Temple
which makes this pick a bit harder. But, as Yogi said “when
you come to a fork in the road, take it”. So, I am going to take
the fork that leads to Happy Valley and take the Nits in a 23-16
win.
Dick’s Thoughts
The Pirates are one of 3 teams to make the playoffs the last
3 seasons. They join the Dodgers and Cardinals with this
distinction. Who would have ever thought during those 20
long seasons of losing we would see this. Most of us just
wanted a 500 season.
Who would have ever believed the Pirates could sweep the
Rockies with J A Happ, Charlie Morton, and Jeff Locke pitching? What a series by Starling Marte with 13 hits tying Pie
Traynor as the only Pirates to ever have that many hits in a
series.
As of this writing GM Neal Huntington looks like a genius
with his trade deadline moves. Happ has 6 wins, Joe Blanton
has 5, and Aramis Ramirez has 33 rbi’s and he didn’t mortgage the future on these pickups.
Several former Pitt players are once again starring in the
NFL. Darrelle Revis was the AFC defensive player of the week
in week 1. Aaron Donald was named the NFC defensive
player of the week for week 2 while Larry Fitzgerald was the
named NFC player of the week in week 2.
The Blue Jays have 3 players this year with 35 home runs
and 100 rbi’s. The Royals have never had a player put up
those numbers.
If the NBA Finals go 7 games next year the last game will be
played on June 19th.
Yogi Berra played both games of a double header 117 times.
Clint Hurdle has trouble playing some guys 2 games in a row.
Yogi also had 7 seasons of 25 strikeouts or less. Tony Gwynn
is only other major leaguer with such a stat.

Three minutes a day. That’s the minimum amount of time
that The Christophers’ founder, Maryknoll Father James
Keller, encouraged people to spend on their spiritual lives.
No matter how busy you are, he thought, you’ve got to be
able to squeeze in three minutes, right? And to help people
along, Father Keller created a book titled, appropriately
enough, “Three Minutes a Day.” It consisted of a daily story or
reflection, along with a Scripture verse and short prayer.
The book proved popular so he kept publishing new volumes, and we’ve kept up that tradition. In fact, we’ve reached
the 50th volume, so you could say it’s the series’ golden anniversary. We’re proud to have reached such a special number!
I also think the book may be more relevant to people’s lives
now than in the past because everyone seems busier than
ever. Also, our attention spans have decreased. The younger
generation, especially, often communicates in Twitter-sized
messages of 140 characters or less. While the entries in
“Three Minutes a Day” aren’t quite that short, they’re certainly the ideal length for anyone who wants to add some
moral and spiritual substance to their lives in today’s fastpaced world. Consider this story:
Tara and her one-year-old daughter went to visit her greatgrandparents at their nursing home. She could see on the
faces of the elderly couple the joy that her visit brought them.
On her way home, Tara listened to “The Jennifer Fulwiler
Show” on Sirius-XM’s Catholic Channel radio station and
heard Christopher Award-winning author Kerry Weber being interviewed about her book “Mercy in the City.” The conversation prompted Tara to reflect on the idea of mercy, so
she shared the following thoughts on her Instagram page:
“Sometimes the corporal works of mercy don’t look like
we expect. Visiting the imprisoned doesn’t always mean visiting those in jail. Sometimes the imprisoned are those imprisoned by their bodies, unable to...do the things they want [to
do]. Sometimes the imprisoned are those who receive no
visitors from the outside world. Sometimes your daughter
offering a smile to the elderly and the infirm can teach you
more about love and mercy than years of theology. Opportunities for mercy abound in our lives, if only we take the time to
see them.”
Hopefully, that reflection will leave you thinking about
simple ways that you can reflect God’s love to the people
around you. The book also includes stories about courage,
gratitude, forgiveness, and more. There’s even a beautiful
nighttime prayer I found online that was written by Lutheran
pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was killed during World War
II for his anti-Nazi activities. He wrote:
“O Lord my God, thank You for bringing this day to a close;
Thank You for giving me rest in body and soul. Your hand has
been over me and has guarded and preserved me. Forgive
my lack of faith and any wrong that I have done today, and
help me to forgive all who have wronged me. Let me sleep in
peace under Your protection, and keep me from all the temptations of darkness. Into Your hands I commend my loved
ones and all who dwell in this house; I commend to You my
body and soul. O God, Your holy name be praised. Amen.”

With the arrival of Fall, many of us turn our thoughts to
hunting. October is an especially good month for this. The
woods are beautiful, and the temperatures are mellow. It’s
just a great time to be out.
One of the great October events is the opening of the early
small game season. To me, that means squirrel hunting. I
have always enjoyed hunting the little critters. Maybe it’s because that was the first type of hunting I ever did, and a squirrel was the first thing I ever bagged. This year, I have a couple
of reasons for added excitement. Over the course of the past
year, I acquired two classic Mossberg bolt action shotguns.
One is a 16 gauge, and the other is a 410. I am anxious to try
them in the field. I wish that squirrels weren’t such a big pain
to clean, but what are you gonna do?
Another great thing is the senior deer season. My friends
and I like to call it “geezer season,” as it’s geared toward folks
like us. For whatever reason, you are allowed to shoot does,
but no bucks. As is the case with so many Game Commission
policies, I do not understand it. Oh, well, the season is still a
lot of fun to be had in nice weather.
As much as I love warm weather hunting, it does have a
couple of drawbacks. For one thing, meat spoils much more
quickly than in November or December. That means that if
you get a deer, you have to get it out of the woods and cooled
off as soon as possible. This is complicated by the lack of
snow on the ground, which can make dragging a deer a more
difficult task. Regardless, the absence of freezing makes it
worthwhile.
We all know that this is a great time to fish. The water is still
pretty warm, and the fish seem to be hyperactive. As the
water cools, they will get more sluggish and harder to catch.
In the dead of winter, when you are a little bit tired of turkey
and ham, some nice filets, which were frozen properly, can
really hit the spot. For some reason, this seems especially true
if you deep fry them.
You know, October looks, sounds and smells nice, too. One
of my favorite art prints is titled “Autumn Jays,” by well known
wildlife artist Donald Blakney. It shows the birds on an oak

waste of time. They do listen to comments from the public,
but do you think they really care what we think? If they do,
they have not demonstrated it in the past.

Campaign Phase; Groundbreaking 2016
CLARION-The next phase
of the fundraising campaign
for a new full service Clarion
County YMCA is launching
this week.
“The new community
phase follows a successful
major gift campaign over the
last three months, pushing
the total amount raised to
over $7 million or 86 percent
of our goal of $8.1 million,”
said Milissa Bauer and Al
Lander, campaign cabinet cochairs.
A team of committed individuals joined the co-chairs
during the major gift phase.
The team members include

Mehta, Ralph Montana, Mike
Patton and Jesse Kelley, Director of the Clarion County
YMCA. Milissa and Al want to
thank the cabinet for all their
hard work educating the
community on the project
that lead to securing over $1.5
million in donations. This
money is being committed
not only from the Clarion
Area, but also from all parts
of Clarion County; including
Emlenton, Fryburg, Knox,
Lucinda, New Bethlehem,
Shippenville,
and
Strattanville.
The community phase is led
by a dedicated group of 15
volunteers who will also focus
on educating the public about
the campaign. A grass root
campaign will follow later
this year to focus on remaining gifts.

project is expected next
spring. In addition to contributions, the YMCA applied
for RACP funding earlier this
year from the Commonwealth.
“We are now waiting on
passage of the state budget
and notification of awards
from the RACP (Redevelopment Assistance Capital
Program) Grant,” said Bauer
and Lander. “Because the
amount of a possible grant
award and the state requirements for construction are
unclear, we are waiting until the grant amount is determined to develop the final
shape of the project, including the building design.”

phase raised over $5.4 million (almost 70 percent)
from lead gifts and commitments by a small group of key
individuals, including more
than $600,000.00 in pledges
from the local YMCA Board.

and organizations that have
made substantial donations.
The $8.1 million full-service
Clarion County YMCA will be
located near Exit 62 of I-80
and the Clarion Oaks Golf
Course.
The new project, among
other facilities, will include a
swimming pool that will provide lap swimming, therapy,
swimming lessons and other
year-round recreation activities that the YMCA. An official
groundbreaking will be held
in Spring 2016. Completion
of the project is expected
within approximately 12 to
18
months
from
groundbreaking.

Evankovich of Central Electric Cooperative (CEC) has
been promoted to line superintendent.
“We are fortunate to have
John as our new line superintendent,”
states
Fred
Terwilliger, director of Engineering and Operations. “He
brings extensive experience
and knowledge to this position.”
John began his career with
CEC as a tree trimmer in December of 1982. He advanced
to the line crew in May of
1985. Since then, he has been
an apprentice lineman, journeyman lineman, and most
recently, chief lineman — a
position held since April of
2008.
John graduated from
Williamsport Area Community College (Penn State Technical Institute) in 1982 with
an electrical construction degree. Since that time he has
furthered his education by attending Butler County
Line Superintendent - John Evankovich
Community College and numerous job-related schools.
John has been a lifelong
member of CEC. He and his
wife Mitzi live in Perry
Township,
Armstrong
County. They have five children and three grandchildren.

Salem Pumpkin Festival
Saturday, October 17th
Salem and St. Paul’s Lutheran Parish’s annual Pumpkin Fest
will be held at the Salem Community Building on Saturday,
October 17th from 11 am until 6 pm.
New for this year is the Fun 5K Race. The race registration
begins at 9 and the Fun 5k Race race starts at 10. Also new for
this year is a pie and chilli cook off that starts at 11. Make sure
to have your $5.00 entry fee and your food prepared and
brought in by 10:45 am to get it entered into the contest.
Dr. Brian’s Friends will be performing at noon. An archery
shoot will begin at noon and an eating contest for teens will
take place at 1:30. The cornhole tournament will start at 2
while the Leatherwood Band will be performing. There will
be a kids talent show starting at 3:30 and the Son Light Puppeteers will be performing at 4 pm.
To finish up this fun filled day, Incredible Ike, the balloon
artist will be entertaining kids at 5 pm followed by the Knox
Community Choir at 5:30pm.
There will be consessions, a bake sale, homemade soups,
hot dogs, pie, games, crafts, pumpkins to paint or carve, Chinese auction, and inflatables.

tradition for many families. Everyone is welcome!

“Angels for Christmas” giftgiving project. Children who
reside in the A-C Valley district may receive a new coat
or clothes, new boots or
shoes, and a wished-for toy.
Parents who have children in
need of these items and cannot provide them for their

Let's continue our exploration of the stops for the 2015
Fall Driving Tour which will
be held on Saturday, October
10th. Last week we took you
into Clintonville through Six
Points and finished in Parker,
PA, the smallest city in the
USA. We took a quick glance
at Backwoods Cafe in
Clintonville, the Six Points
School House and Buzard Funeral Home and the Parker
VFD which will be hosting a
Fall Festival and feature a
large craft show with a Chinese auction, 50-50 raffle and
door prizes.
As we leave Parker and
drive back towards Foxburg,
travel up the hill and stop in
at The Memorial Church of
Our Father on your right.
You will think you are visiting
England as you view the
church from the outside. It is
beautiful and of architectural
and historical significance.
Members of the church will
be there to give a tour of the
church and parsonage. Light
refreshments and a restroom

“Chuck”
Dittman Jr., “The Harmonica Man”, 85, of
Stonehouse Rd., Emlenton,
Richland Twp., Clarion
County passed away at 2:10
p.m. Saturday, September
19, 2015 while surrounded
by his family at home.
Charles was born in
Richland Twp., Clarion
County on December 25,
1929. He was son of Charles
L. Sr. and Leona Stein
Dittman. He worked for
many years as a coal miner
and a timberman. Chuck
was a member of the United
Mineworkers of America.
He was well known for
playing the harmonica.
Charles enjoyed hunting
and woodworking, especially building picnic tables.
He was of the Christian
faith.
Mr. Dittman was married
on July 2, 1949 in Franklin
to the former Betty Lou
DeCrapio Anderson. She
preceded him in death on
September 12, 1990. Surviving are four children, Wally
Dittman and his wife, Diana
of Blacksville, WV, Roberta
Tennant and her husband,
Larry, Terry Dittman and his
wife Lois, all of Core, WV,
and Charlene Holbert and
her husband Dave of Mt.
Morris, PA. Also surviving is
his longtime companion
and caregiver, Rhonda Bell
and her daughter, Tiffany of
Emlenton ; 15 grandchildren, as well as a number of
great-grandchildren
and
great-great-grandchildren;
two brothers,
John
Dittman and his wife, Patty,
of Enon Valley, and Dick
Charles L. “Chuck”
Dittman Jr.
Dittman, of Butler; four sisters, June Robinson, of
Franklin, Mag Johnston, of
East Brady, Dee Rufner Bell
of Little Rock, AK, and Pat
Dittman, of Butler as well as
a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents
and wife, Chuck was preceded in death by a son,
Rick Dittman, who died November 3, 1992, a brother,
Bob Dittman, a sister Betty
“Bets” Johnson and three
grandsons, Todd, Chad and
Ben Dittman.
Friends will be received at
the Hile Funeral Home Inc.,
802 Grove St., Saint Petersburg from 6-8 p.m. Monday
and on Tuesday from Noon
– 2 p.m. A funeral service
will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the funeral home
with the Rev. Randy Evans,
a VNA hospice chaplain,
officiating. Interment will
be in Beverly Hills Memorial
Gardens in Morgantown,
WV.

John Wesley Preston
John Wesley Preston, 79,
of Parker, PA., passed away
peacefully at his residence
on Wednesday, evening,
September 23, 2015 surrounded by his loving family
Born on August 6, 1936
in Foxburg, PA., he was the
son of the late James Elmer
and Bertha Gates Preston.
He was a graduate of the
former St. Petersburg High
School.
John worked for B&O
Railroad as a bridge builder
and repair specialist for over
30 years. He retired from the
ACV School District as a custodian. After retirement
John worked as a greeter at
Wal-Mart as well as a driver
for Clarion Transportation.
He was married to Brenda
Joyce Wike on August 27th
1966, who survives. As a
man of faith, John was a
member of the River Hill
Evangelical Church of Shippenville. He loved to sing in
church and at one point
was a mission director on a
mission trip to Belize. He
loved his family and had a
passion for coaching baseball from little league to legion and high school. He
coached for many years
well into his 60’s.
In addition to his wife
Brenda Wike Preston, he his
survived by two daughters:
Joyce Preston of Parker, PA;
and Jana (Shawn) Burrows
of Callensburg. Three sons:
John (Lupe) Preston of San
Antonio, TX.; Barry (Barb)
Preston of Youngstown,
OH.; and James (Heather)
Preston of Parker, PA; two
brothers: James Preston of
Sligo, PA; and Larry (Esther)
Preston of Foxburg, Pa.; ten
grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents
he was preceded in death
by one brother Richard
Preston.
Friends were received at
the H. Jack Buzard Funeral
Home (201 S. Wayne St.)
Parker, PA, on Friday the
25t. The Funeral Service
took place on Saturday the
26th at the Funeral Home at
11 AM. Interment was held
in the Foxburg Cemetery.
