Dick’s Thoughts - Congratulations to former AC Valley standout Andy Ganoe for
finishing 2nd in the recent Pittsburgh Amateur Golf Championship. This is the second
consecutive year that Andy
has captured the second
place prize.
Jake Hickman recently recorded his first career hole in
one at Foxburg Country Club.
Jake used a pitching wedge
for his perfect shot on hole
#8. Witnessing the ace were
Rob Foust, Jeff Carr, and Andy
Pore.
The Pirates base running
has been so bad that many are
suggesting that after Sunday
afternoon games the Bucs run
the bases instead of children.
When the Pirates played the
Atlanta Braves on 6/26 Starling Marte had as many home
runs as the Braves starting
lineup.
The Phil Kessel deal looks
like a steal for the Penguins.
Kessel might score 50 goals
playing alongside Crosby.
The Pens could very well win
the Presidents Cup for most
points in the regular season.
The only problem is high flying, high scoring teams don’t
win the Cup.
Last week the Cleveland
Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert
spent $240 million on free
agents Kevin Love, Tristan

$375 million for the team.
The Knicks and the Lakers
used to be among the NBA
elite. Now the 2 teams can’t
even get a so so free agent like
Greg Monroe who chose to
sign with the Milwaukee
Bucks for the same money
NY and LA offered.
Louisville is the first college
to have a player drafted in the

Thought of the week: Surround yourself with those
who see greatness in you,
even when you don’t see it in
yourself.

Ordinarily, I would be
writing about fishing at this
time, but the weather has
just not cooperated. The
river is high and muddy,
and few have gone on it to
fish. For that reason, we
will start off with some info
from the Game Commission. This involves the status of the bald eagle in our
state. Here is an excerpt
from the Game Commission’s news release on
the subject,
from the
Commission’s R. Matthew
Hugh.
“Like many Pennsylvanians,
I remember a time when bald
eagles were absent just about
everywhere in the state, and it
truly is astonishing how
things have turned around,”
Hough said. “Through our reintroduction program, our
protection of eagles and effective management, we’ve
gone from three nests statewide to what soon could be
300, all within the span of my
career with the Game Commission.
“It’s an accomplishment of
which all Pennsylvanians can
be proud,” Hough said.
Of the nests reported so far
this year, 20 are new, which
could mean they were built
and used for the first time this
year or, if they existed previously, they were reported for
the first time this year.
The Game Commission
urges all eagle nests be reported.
Even if nests were reported
in a previous year, it’s important to report them again if
they were used again this year,
said Patti Barber, a biologist
with the Game Commission’s
Endangered and Nongame
Birds section.
“People who have reported
a nest as active in a previous
year might not realize they
should report back each year
to help the Game Commission track the population
over time, Barber said. It’s
one of the challenges of documenting bald-eagle nests as
the population of eagles continues to grow. Also, folks
might assume bald eagles
they’re seeing are associated
with long-established nests, as
opposed to new pairs setting
up territories near established
nests,” Barber said.
Reports of bald-eagle
nests always are appreci-

A Married Couple
Makes Saintly History
Jerry Costello for The Christophers
Improbable as it may seem, the Church will finally get
around—for the very first time—to declaring that a married
couple are saints (with a capital S, that is). True, they are
hardly an ordinary couple; their daughter, St. Therese of
Liseux, is one of the Church’s best known saints. But in October of this year, in conjunction with the Synod of Bishops on
the family, Louis Martin and his wife, Marie-Azelie (Zelie), are
scheduled to be added to the ranks of those named saints—
the first husband and wife to be canonized together in Church
history.
What was it that made the Martins such special people, that
set them apart from the rest of us? After all, they seemed to
have lived such routine lives. J.J. Ziegler, writing in Our Sunday Visitor, paints a portrait of a fairly successful couple who
plied their trades from their home. Louis, who was a skilled
watchmaker, and Zelie, a talented maker of fine lace (she
lived all her life in the Alencon area of France, known for its
lace), lived above a storefront they worked at together.
But there were a few special events in their lives that, in
retrospect, make them stand out—such as the first time they
saw each other. One day in 1858 they were walking across a
bridge in Alencon, passing by each other. Louis was 34; Zelie
was 26. And at that moment, Zelie heard a voice inside her.
“This is the man,” it said, “that I have prepared for you.”
Both of them, growing up in France at a time of spiritual
rebirth, had tried to enroll in religious communities, and both,
somewhat mysteriously, were rejected. At 22, Louis sought
admission to the Augustinians, but was turned down because
he didn’t know Latin. For the better part of a year he took
lessons in that language from a priest, but finally abandoned
the effort and went off to learn the watchmaker’s trade. Zelie
too was interested in religious life; at 19 she tried to enter the
Daughters of Charity. But her attempt, like that of her future
husband, would end in refusal, for reasons not entirely clear.
They married (only three months after that incident on the
bridge, when Zelie had heard that “voice” from inside her)
and began life as husband and wife. Their home was a center
of prayer, devotion and affection. Each morning they attended Mass, and generally lived in an atmosphere of love and
generosity. In time Zelie would give birth to nine children—
including, of course, the future St. Therese. Some 244 letters,
published in a book titled “A Call to a Deeper Love,” reflect
their devotion to each other.
And then there were the miracles on their road to sainthood—the healing of an Italian infant for their beatification,
the healing of a Spanish girl (who had been expected to die)
that paved the way to their canonization. “The doctors were
totally amazed,” said the priest who was postulator of their
cause. Some years later, he continued, “she is completely
healthy, like all girls of her age.”
Now, as one headline writer had it, “history awaits” the canonization of the Martins. It will be good to have a married
couple added to the ranks of saints, to be admired, to be
cherished—and, yes, to pray to as well.

ated. Perhaps the easiest
way to report a nest is to
contact the Game Commission through its public comments
email
address:
[email protected], and
use the words, “Eagle Nest
Information”, in the subject
field. Reports also can be
phoned in to a Game Commission Region Office or the
Harrisburg headquarters.
“Even if nests are well
known locally, please don’t
hesitate to report them,” Barber said. “You might be adding a new nest to the list, or
making certain that one reported in a previous year is
accurately counted this year.”
Each year, bald-eagle nests
continue to be reported as
the year goes on. In 2014, for
instance, the preliminary
number of 254 nests ballooned to 273 nests by year’s
end. Other years have produced similar results.
But the mid-year numbers
are an accomplishment in
their own right, Barber said.
In 1983, when the Game
Commission launched a
seven-year reintroduction
program, only three baldeagle pairs were nesting
statewide. Today, there are
277 with more remaining to
be counted.
“We so often refer to the
story of the bald eagle as one
of the greatest wildlife success stories out there, but it
just keeps getting better all
the time,” Barber said.
“People are fascinated with
eagles, and their chances to
see them and watch them are
better now than they’ve ever
been.”
I, for one, am delighted every time I see an eagle.
When I was a kid, the idea
of seeing an eagle around
here would have been ridiculous. Now, it is fairly
common.
I don’t know if the credit
should go to the Game Commission, and I don’t care. I

United Way Supports
New Clarion County YMCA
CLARION-The United Way of Clarion County is the latest
countywide organization to pledge its support for a new fullservice Clarion County YMCA with a $50,000 commitment.
“The United Way of Clarion County and the YMCA have had
a great relationship for many years and we are proud to make
a $50,000 commitment toward this new facility,” said Melissa
Fulton, United Way Executive Director.
“We view this as an investment in our community and the
opportunities it brings with in clearly along with our mission;
advancing the common good by promoting health, education, and income stability throughout Clarion County,” continued Fulton. “We are honored to be a part of this project
and anxious to see the positive impact it will have.”
Presenting the contribution were Fulton and United Way
President Michael Patton to Al Lander, co-chair of the YMCA
Campaign Cabinet, and Jesse Kelley, branch manger of the
Clarion County YMCA.
The $8.1 million full-service Clarion County YMCA will be
located near Exit 62 of I-80 and the Clarion Oaks Golf Course.
The campaign’s silent phase raised over $5.4 million (almost 70 percent) from lead gifts and commitments by a small
group of key individuals, including more than $600,000.00 in
pledges from the local YMCA Board.
“The campaign for the remaining $2.7 million launched a
little over one month ago has now raised nearly an additional
$1 million in commitments, mostly from local community
businesses and organizations who have made substantial donations,” said Lander.
The project is now almost 80 percent funded towards its
goal.
The new project, among other facilities, will bring access to
a lap swimming/therapy pool and other year-round recreation activities that the YMCA provides because of its 501(c) 3
statuses. Completion of the project is expected by late 2016.
For more information about the campaign, contact Campaign Communications Coordinator Cindy Nave at 814-2269722.

ways of reaching out to audiences with their heartfelt message of real bluegrass.
The Allegheny Drifters released their first CD, Out of
the Woods, in the spring of
2006. It received great reviews – County Sales said
“good songs, good singing,
excellent listening” while
Bluegrass Unlimited described it as “refined and well
produced… traditional in the
best possible way”.
In 2008, the band released
Can’t Wait, featuring the outstanding fiddling of internationally acclaimed Michael
Cleveland. WYEP’s Bruce
Mountjoy referred to the material as “great original additions to the bluegrass
songbook…tasteful arrangements that make each song
come alive”. With a nod to
Bob’s catchy title tune, Bluegrass Music Profiles enthusiastically declared, “Can’t

Their latest project, an all

Michael Cleveland provided

projects have been well-received by national and international audiences worldwide via broadcast radio and

Over the past decade, the

MADD Applauds PA Governor’s Veto
on Pennsylvania Alcohol Sales
Harrisburg, PA (July 2,
2015) — Mothers Against
Drunk Driving® (MADD) supports the decision of Governor Tom Wolf to veto the
Pennsylvania
General
Assembly’s passage of
HB466. The bill would transfer current state-controlled
alcohol sales to the private
sector.
“Privatization of alcohol
sales runs counter to MADD’s
mission of ending drunk driving and preventing underage
drinking,” said MADD National President Colleen
Sheehey-Church. “MADD’s

veto is based on thorough scientific research by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), indicating
that privatization of alcohol
sales leads to lapsed enforcement of laws pertaining to alcohol sales.”
In April 2012, the CDC reported an analysis of 17 peerreviewed studies in The Guide
to Community Prevention
Services, which showed that
privatization of alcohol sales
will result in a reduction in the
enforcement of sales regulations including enforcement
of the minimum legal drinking age.
MADD applauds Governor
Wolf’s decision today, which
will help protect Pennsylvanians from the dangers of
drunk driving and underage
drinking, and help keep Pennsylvania roadways safe.
