through by rodents, and other items that could not be
sold due to their condition.
The debris was painstakingly sorted through room by
room. Trash was bagged into hundreds of garbage
bags and any possible salvageable items were placed
into boxes, which were brought to the back yard where
their contents were further examined.
It took two truck loads over
two days to move all of the
items in the house and garage
to three storage units..
For the following eight weeks from February 12th to
March 26 every salvageable item located in storage
units were reexamined and further sorted into
lots containing similar items. Items of value were
catalogued, photographed, repackaged, and stored in
storage unit number one. Items that were determined
to be of little value were stored in storage unit
number two. They contain items that would be more
appropriately sold at a swap meet. The items vary in
value to $1 to $20 each. In fact, many of the items are
a mishmash of odds and ends with little or no value
that should be donated to
a charity. Due to the
quality and condition of
the swap meet items,

conducted by Paul Hamel and Darleen Guien. During
the time spent sorting items in both the residence
and storage units, ongoing research was going on to
determine the general value of the salvageable items
until April 11 when this report was completed.
The value of the items was determined by what similar
items were being sold on eBay, from catalogues, at
recent auctions, from local jewelers, stamp dealers The jewelry is stored in

work at the storage unit.
Jewelry
This collection of jewelry is made up of 1,266 pieces
weighing 50,400 grams or 110 pounds. The silver
jewelry with stones weighs 12,650 grams or 26
pounds. The sterling silver jewelry weighs 700 grams.
Other kinds of jewelry and strands of beads, stones, Examples of unopened
and other materials weigh 3,700 grams. A major factor coin and stamp packaging
in selling jewelry is the fluctuation in gold and silver
prices as well as being able to mark up the items in
order to make a profit when selling the items retail. The
estimated selling price for all the jewelry is $20,500.
Coins
The collectable coins in this collection were not
organized in books or in another way. The majority Above and below: Paul
of the coins were loose and scattered throughout the Hamel’s home office with
home. Most were in unopened packages from coin jewelry, stamps, and coins
dealers. (There are also numerous coin holder books
that were also unused and in original packaging.) The
total value of the coins is approximately $8,700.
Stamps
The stamps in this collection are common issues that
were sold mainly “on approval” or bought through
catalogs from stamp dealers such as Kenmore Stamp

Company, the US Postal
Service, and the Postal

None of the collections
include any high value
classic stamps. All the
stamps are from the last
half of the 1900s to 2007.
The majority of the stamps
were still in their original
packaging, which had to
be removed because they
were badly soiled. Some

stamps (those that are
from the 1800s and early
1900s) do not normally
sell at their catalog value
or even face value. In
fact, it is difficult to sell
them for more than 75%80% of face value. Unlike
coins, which are tied to the
price of precious metals,
stamps are valued by their
age, condition, and rarity.
Unfortunately, the stamps
in this collection do not fall
into these categories. The
total value of the stamps
is approximately $3,300.
Silver, Silver
Plated, Bronze,
and Pewter
The vintage silver pieces
are unpolished but in
good condition. They are
mostly unmatched sets.
Although some pieces
may sell for more than Stamp in plastic bins in
their weight, the lots are storage unit S109
valued calculated only by
weight. The value of the
sterling silver was calculated by multiplying the weight
in ounces by the current price of silver at $28 per ounce.
Most of the silver plated, bronze, and pewter items
are vintage items which are mismatched, unpolished,
but in good condition. The total value is $9,100.

Miscellaneous Item
There is a full storage container that is full of what I
call “swap meet type items.” However, there are some
little gems remaining to be discovered. Basically, the
items include household items in their original boxes
and not. There are sets of dishes, very old records,
hundreds of VCR videos in their original boxes,
toys, books, Christmas decorations, games, vintage
clothing, large full-size dog statues, trinkets, etc. The
items were not catalogued because, individually, they
were valued at $20 or less. Most of the “junk” items
were thrown away during sifting through everything.
The remaining items are saleable.

Jewelry from the Carolina Short Estate
This collection of jewelry is made up of 1,266 pieces weighing

weigh12,650 grams or 26 pounds. The sterling silver jewelry

Estimated selling price for all the jewelry is

Pearls
Silver Jewelry (92.5%) with
semiprecious stones or cut glass.
This type of costume jewelry is being sold for $100 per
pound because of the quality of work and the use of metal,
semiprecious stones, and cut glass. The following formula was
used in calculating the value of the contents of the following
lots: the number of grams converted to pounds multiplied by
$100 per pound equals the price of the lot. For example, Lot
11 was calculated as 1,800 grams converted to 3lbs, 15 oz
(rounded off to 4 pounds) multiplied by $100 equals: $400.
The following formula was used in calculating the value of
the silver content in the jewelry: the number of grams divided
by 33.1 to give the number of ounces, then the number of
ounces were multiplied by the price of silver per ounce, then
divide by half to compensate for the weight of the stones or
cut glass. For example, Lot 1 was calculated as 2,250 grams
divided by 33.1 equals 68 ounces multiplied by @ $28 per
ounce equals $1,904 then divided by 50% equals $992.

Barbie Dolls and Clothes
There are 161 Barbie dolls and 15 boxes of Barbie clothes. There are no vintage dolls; most date from the
1990s to 2008. Some of the boxes are slightly soiled due to the condition in which they were stored, but the
dolls have never been removed, are in mint condition, and are still in their original boxes. On average, each
dolls sells for approximately $20 on eBay. However, there are not many collections for auctions in which such
large collections are sold. The dolls are usually sold individually for a fixed price ranging from $10-$25. Not all
of the dolls are shown in the photos below. Each doll is listed by lot as well as alphabetically. Barbie clothes
sell for about $10 per set. 161 dolls x $20 = $3,220 and 15 clothe sets x $10 = $150.
Estimated selling price: $3,370.
