Cynthia Wuller
This book is a guide for anyone interested in creating
wire jewelry. With each chapter the skill level increases,
flowing from basic wire components to complex
hand-shaped linked jewelry. A person with no skills
can begin with chapter one and gain intermediate skills
by the end of the book; a person at the intermediate level
can use the book to learn new techniques and perfect
their understanding of wirework.

Chain mail is an easy way to create beautiful, professional-looking, fine
metal jewelry. Traditional patterns are once again popular, and only one
skill is needed for most projects—the ability to open and close jump rings.
This collection of six chain mail projects will introduce readers to the basic
patterns and teach them exciting variations.

Karin Buckingham
Mostly Metals is targeted to beginner and intermediate
jewelry makers who want to create stylish jewelry with
chain, jump rings, spacers, and other metal components.
Basic techniques are introduced, and then expanded on,
to create unusual, but easy-to-make jewelry. All the jewelry
can be made with three or fewer tools and easy-to-find
materials. Variations help readers learn the importance of
materials in design, and how the same project can have
different looks.

or fifth career, having had
“previous lives” ranging from
high-tech and fast paced to the
decidedly lower-tech.
Karin has had two roles at
Kalmbach Publishing Co., first
designing projects and writing
for BeadStyle magazine, and
now as an associate editor in the
Books department. She has a B.A.
degree from Denison University.
Cut a 3-in. (7cm) length
of wire, and
center a top-drilled bead
on the wire.
Bend each side upward
to form a
squared-off “U” shape.
Leave a tiny
bit of room for the bead
to move
– about 1mm.
Cross the wires into an
“X” shape
above the bead.
Use chainnose pliers
to bend one
wire straight up and one
wire to the
side. They’ll form a right
angle at their
intersection.
Wrap the horizontal wire
around the
vertical wire as in a wrapped
loop.
Make two or three wraps
and trim the
wire.
Now you need to do somethi
ng with that top wire, so
you can make a
dangle. You can make a plain
loop directly above the wraps,
or you can
make a wrapped loop above
the wraps. The tricky part
about a wrapped
loop is that you want the
top wraps to meet the bottom
wraps. Not only
is this hard to do, but you
end up with a bead that looks
like it has six or
more wraps above it – a lot
of metal showing!
Charming
In this charm bracelet
project, I wanted to
use my
adorable top-drilled
beads
and I wanted to have
the
security of a wrapped-lo
op
connection so I didn’t
have
to worry about my brace
let
snagging on anything.
But I
wasn’t sure if my wraps
would
meet perfectly every
Solution
time.
Add a tiny crystal
above the bottom wraps
,
before I made the top
wraps.

YOU
NEED
1.To determine the
length of chain you’ll
need, measure
your wrist (allow
for a loose fit) and
measure your clasp.
Subtract the clasp
length from your
wrist measurement
and cut a piece of
chain to that length.
2. Count your links

many dangles you
want to have. I decided
to put a dangle
4. Make the first half
of a wrapped loop
above the crystal. Beginnin
g with the center
link of chain, attach a
bead unit (b) and
complete the wrapped
loop. 5. Skip a link and
add a
second dangle (I changed
crystal color for more
interest)
Repeat until you’ve attached
all your dangles (c).

on every other link from
the center out.
Follow steps 1-4 of wrappin
g above a
top-drilled bead to make
your dangle
units.
TIP

Mostly Metals
If you choose this route,
use a slightly thinner gauge
wire, such as 24 gauge
,
and you’ll have less bulk.
3. String a crystal above
the wraps on a
bead unit (a).
d
6. Attach the clasp: Open
a jump ring (Basics,
p. X), string the end link
of chain and a clasp half.
Close the jump ring. Repeat
on the other side with
a
second jump ring and
the remaining clasp half
(d).

Necklace
conversion
When I finished this
bracelet I held it
up to check the dangles
and realized
it would look great as
a necklace as
well. Simply cut a length
of chain,
add an identical toggle
clasp to the
ends, and you’ll have
a necklaceconversion kit at the
ready. You’ll
need about 14 in. (36cm)
of chain,
2 5mm jump rings,
and a matching
toggle clasp.

Metal Clay
Carol A. Babineau
Metal clay is an exciting medium that is growing in
popularity. Metal Clay Beyond the Basics aims to challenge
and instruct readers who have some experience working

techniques and materials into their work. Through 24
original projects, each with process shots and
step-by-step instructions, readers will learn how to
integrate sterling silver, ceramics, and enamel into their

Kalmbach Publishing Co. • Step-by-step we guide you to success
www.Retailers.Kalmbach.com
The path of Kalmbach Publishing Co.
Kalmbach Publishing Co. began with
what Al Kalmbach did best, printing.
He took printing equipment out of his
father’s basement, moved it to a vacant
garage, and made his dream of
magazine publishing a reality.
Today at Kalmbach Publishing Co.,
interactions with internal and external
clients are customer-focused. Kalmbach
currently produces 15 magazines and
more than 250 books and products
while being recognized as the leading
publisher of hobby and special interest
magazines and books.
Kalmbach continues to diversify their
product line with new products and
acquisitions, and is dedicated to
recruiting new hobbyists with their
beginners’ model railroading and
beading product lines and other
introductory materials. In the future,
Kalmbach will continue to add
products to its primary lines and
explore opportunities to serve readers
by treating their customers like VIPs.
