2 | GHSA TRADITIONAL WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPs w w w . G H S A . N E T Great Wrestling Action! february 14-16, 2013 GHSA TRADITIONAL WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPs | 3 STATE TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE Welcome, GHSA wrestling community! A re you ready for several days of intense excitement? Wrestlers from all classifications and from all parts of Georgia will compete in the 2013 GHSA Wrestling Championships – a real highlight of the GHSA year. On behalf of the Georgia High School Association and its corporate partners, I want to thank you for your support at this year’s State Championship matches, and for your support of high school wrestling throughout this season. The quality of wrestling in Georgia continues to grow tremendously as players, coaches, and officials perform at new levels of excellence. This championship event will showcase great wrestling and outstanding coaching. These athletes have persevered through the battles involved in maintaining their weight in a healthy manner, and they have endured long practices and intense competitions. The Georgia High School Association strongly believes that lifelong lessons about discipline and hard work are learned in the competitive arenas of high school athletics, and this is especially true with Wrestling. The Georgia High School Association could not offer quality tournaments such as this without the hard work of a large number of volunteers who give of themselves tirelessly. This championship event is hosted by the Atlanta Takedown Association, whose members have participated in its planning and operation. A special word of thanks goes out to these volunteers led by Bud Hennebaul, Tournament Director, and to GHSA Associate Director, Denis Tallini, who is the GHSA administrator for Wrestling. The staff of the Macon Centreplex also stands ready to assist you if you have any needs. The GHSA is extremely grateful for the support of a number of corporate partners. As you look through this program and as you look around the Arena, please note the names of these fine partners – and please use their products and services whenever possible. Now, get ready for exciting wrestling action. Support your wrestlers vigorously, and remember to demonstrate good sportsmanship always. The Warriors could win the program’s first traditional title with four sectional champions. North Hall is another team that could break through if senior Tyler Kratzer (145) can continue his recent domination. Another wrestler to watch is Buford’s Chip Ness (182), a sectional champion who won the Class AA 170 title last year. LOADED CLASS ... W hen wrestlers from across the state descend upon Macon for the 2013 GHSA Traditional State championships, several familiar faces will be considered the favorites for the state team titles, but countless teams will also have a shot at breaking through to etch a new name in GHSA lore. In Class AAA Banks County, winner of the 2013 AAA Duals championship last month, enters with eight wrestlers that will compete for individual weight class championships. Banks County finished in 22nd place one year ago in AA with Patton finishing fifth in the 120-pound class. This year Patton will be joined by Chris McCrackin (106), Francisco Hurtado (132), Tony Fultz (138), Eli Smallwood (170), Hayden Dilbeck (182) and Matt Dilbeck (195). Woodward Academy was runner-up in the 2013 AAA Duals and finished sixth in the traditional championships last year. Head coach Pete Fritts said the team is treating this weekend as “business as usual.” “We prepare the same way for all our matches and put the same emphasis on all matches, state, series or otherwise,” said Fritts. “No added pressure. There is probably less pressure since we are not the favorite.” Woodward Academy will be led by senior Chad Pyke, who will attempt to defend his state title from one year ago. “I feel good about our lineup and who we are bringing to Macon,” said Fritts. “Every match will be a tough one and we are aware of that. At the end of the day, all we can do is wrestle our best and leave nothing on the mat. (Last year) we let one slip away from us and we are refocused to wrestle our best until the Some would argue that Class AA is the most competitive classification in all of GHSA wrestling. Jefferson has won 12 straight traditional titles, but with GHSA reclassification, defending Class A-champion Bremen, which won the last four Class A traditional titles, moved into AA and could snap Jefferson’s impressive streak. Jefferson qualified 12 wrestlers for individual titles, including eight who claimed East Sectional titles last week in Dublin. Chase Tipperato (106), Josh Harris (126), Tyler Marinelli (138), Jack Dollar (145), Jake Sherman (152), Zach Rhymer (160), Jace McColski (182) and Aaron Anderson (220) all won individual crowns with three more finishing second. Bremen will bid for a fifth straight overall title with eight wrestlers headed to Macon. Brock Cooper (132), Kannon Madden (152) and Joe Bexley (heavyweight) will help the Blue Devils attempt to take down Jefferson after capturing sectional titles last week. Bexley won the Class A 285-pound division last year. Greater Atlanta Christian is another squad that could make some serious noise at the championships. GAC finished second in the Area 4-AA tournament behind Jefferson, but last season, GAC was right there at the finish line behind Jefferson in Class AA. GAC will have six wrestlers looking to push the Spartans to a team title, led by AA East Sectional-champion Carter Clinebell (132). Elsewhere in Class AA, Armuchee’s Braylen Scoggins finished fifth last year in the 106-pound class, but has jumped up to 113 and could walk away with the title. Scoggins won the Area 113-pound title then won the West Sectional last week. FRESH BLOOD ... In Class A, Gordon Lee has had to sit and watch Jefferson and Bremen claim title after title, but with Jefferson moving up to AA in 2009 and Bremen, the four-time defending Class A champion now also in AA, Gordon Lee has a shot to earn the program’s first traditional crown. Last season, Gordon Lee finished second to Bremen, which won five weight classes en route to the title. The Gordon Lee program has won at least one share of the last two Class A Duals titles and Brent Raby saw 13 of 14 wrestlers qualify for Macon. Holy Innocents’ is another program on the brink of crashing through for a first traditional title. The Bears claimed a share of the 2012 duals title before finishing runners-up this year. Mt. Zion-Carroll would also be a major player after qualifying a school-record 10 grapplers for the state tournament. Javier Martinez (132) and Will Sizemore (heavyweight) led the Eagles as each won an individual sectional crown. Darlington will be without Spencer Jones, who graduated following a fourthstraight GHSA traditional championship last year, but Darlington will have two sectional champions, Jule Peek (126) and Jordan Beck (152), as the Tigers attempt to improve upon last year’s ninth-place finish. Other interesting stories in Class A include Walker and Mount Paran, which made school history last week at the West Sectionals. After the program sent four senior grapplers to Darlington in just Mount Paran’s second varsity season, Cole Spain (160), Matt McKenzie (170) and Scotty Valiani (285) all advanced to Macon. Walker, meanwhile, qualified all four of its wrestlers in last week’s sectionals including runners-up Williams Schubert (132) and Jason Schubert (138). Photo courtesy of Woodward Academy. Wrestlers have prepared for years to be here this weekend through grueling conditioning programs, dieting to make weight and a myriad of brutal practices honing their techniques and learning what it means to be “wrestler tough.” Parents, coaches and communities will be watching today to see all the hard work pay off for the wrestlers. Being the last meet of the school year means the traditional tournament holds a special importance. Coaches and teams want to close out the season in a positive way. “There’s five seniors this year and I want them to go out on top and they want to go out on top,” Pope coach Jim Haskin said about this weekend. “The whole team wants to go out on top, so that’s a good thing for the program. It steers people in the right direction for the future.” Archer coach Tom Beuglas agrees. Despite winning the duals tournament last month, Beuglas’ team wants this one even more. “Obviously, winning the duals was one of our two goals for the season but I’ve told them all along, everybody remembers what happens last,” Beuglas said. “We kind of put (the duals) behind us pretty quick. I’m not going to lie, it’s big.” APPLES AND ORANGES ... While the duals tournament is strictly a team-oriented event, the traditional meet puts the individual first. However, there is still a team concept and goal. “When you get to the traditional, it’s every man for himself,” Haskin described. “It becomes all about you. The onus is put on the man, the one guy. We also build on when you perform and do what you’re supposed to do, the team wins out as well.” And Haskin knows how it feels to leave on top, as he has guided the Greyhounds to four state titles including the past two traditional championships. Pope has also won the past two duals titles. With so much recent success, Haskin has to find ways to keep his Class AAAAA program motivated to just maintain the status quo, rather than reaching for the top. “When you get to a point where you’re starting to win championships, whether it’s Cobb County championships or a state championship, you want to continue that tradition,” Haskin said. “That’s important to (the wrestlers), to the coaches, to the community and everybody involved. That’s a big part of it, continuing tradition.” While Pope is looking to “three-peat,” Archer is trying to win the first traditional title in school history. The Tigers won their first wrestling state championship ever last month in the duals, but this meet provides different challenges. “Anywhere you can pick up a point here or a point here, they all matter,” Beuglas stated. “The biggest thing is to get more kids on the podium than anybody else. If you can place eight, nine, 10 kids in the top six, you going to be hard to beat.” With a first-place finish this weekend, the Class AAAAAA Tigers would be the first program to sweep the dual and traditional titles within the first four years of the program’s start. Beuglas took over at Archer four years ago after 15 season with Parkview. Now, he has a state title under his belt and a nationally-ranked program. w w w . G H S A . N E T “The first year, we went out and got any person we could get and preached to them to buy into it and commit yourself to wrestling year round, work hard and when you’re a senior, we have a chance to (win state),” he remembered. “We’ve got nine seniors, and they’ve all bought into it.” Beuglas hopes this will not be the end of Archer success, but the beginning. ”We’ve got a lot of young kids so I feel like we’re not really ending, we’re just getting started.” THE CONTENDERS ... In Class AAAA, the odds-on favorite is Gilmer, the three-time reigning duals champion and winners of two of the past three traditional titles. Coach Sam Snider’s Bobcats are led by four grapplers who won titles in the rugged Area 7 traditional tournament: Marcelino Lopez, Cameron Perry, Johnie Flakes, Jared Sweat and J.P. Pritchett. Heritage-Catoosa, however, won last year’s traditional title while duals-finalist Alexander could pose a threat to Gilmer. Pope will be the team to beat once again in Class AAAAA. All-everything wrestler and Air Force signee Brooks Climmons will anchor the Pope lineup while Preston Markwell, Tyler Haskin, T.J. Collins, Davis Burson, Jonny Sexton, Jake Henson, Billy Meek, Zeke Weber, Joey Tabachino and Taylor Howard each had wins for the Greyhounds in the duals finals. Woodland-Bartow and Whitewater are ranked second and third, respectively, according to the Score Atlanta/AJC poll. Finally, in the state’s largest classification, Archer heads a three-headed monster of state contenders, along with Collins Hill and Camden County. The Tigers, however, beat Camden County in the duals finals 35-19 and qualified all 14 wrestlers for the traditional meet. Photo courtesy of Sonny Kennedy.
