Great Basketball Action!
2 | GHSA QUARTERFINALS special edition
Quarterfinals schedule
Hello, GHSA Basketball Fans!
T
here will be great basketball played
this weekend at the Sectionals from
Dalton to Fort Valley and from Columbus
to Savannah as GHSA basketball teams
move one step closer to the much-anticipated state championship games.
The players and coaches have worked
hard all year to get to this point in the season. Many of you have supported these
teams in various ways this season, and
that is an important part of the success of
these teams. It is my desire that you will
enjoy your experience at these games,
and that you will demonstrate the highest level of sportsmanship as you cheer
on your team in a positive way.
The GHSA is grateful for the great
venues in which these games are played,
and we want to thank the administrators
for working to make these games special.
The GHSA wants to thank the large number of volunteer workers who serve at
these games to make them flow smoothly.
Finally, we also want to thank our corporate partners and preferred vendors who
enable the GHSA to produce these postseason events.
Cordially yours,
Dr. Ralph E. Swearngin Jr.
GHSA Executive Director

same line of descent.” From that definition, 2008 state finals and in the first round of the regular occurrence in Georgia. The most
you can see why the world of sports has adopted the word “dynasty” to describe its most
dominant teams.
In the history of Georgia high school
hoops, there have been a few programs that
have had such success. Three of them are either in the middle of their “reigns” or are recently removed from them.
Wheeler, for example, has won four
state titles in Class AAAAA since 2002. The
Wildcats are currently gunning for their sixth
state title under head coach Doug Lipscomb,
who won his first in 1994. Lipscomb has had
several former players earn college scholarships for their hoops skills, and has also sent a
few all the way to the NBA. Some of his former Wildcats include: Shareef Abdur-Rahim,
D.A. Layne, Jermareo Davidson, J.J. Hickson, DeQuan Jones and J.T. Tiller.
Norcross, ironically, has seen their rise to
power come virtually during the same period
as Wheeler’s. The Blue Devils won their first
state title in 2006 and subsequently won the
next two. Wheeler ended the run by elimi-
2007 playoffs. The Wildcats also defeated
Jessie McMillan’s squad in the 2005 finals,
Norcross’ only loss that season. Some former
Blue Devils to have had success at the next
level are Jodie Meeks, Gani Lawal and AlFarouq Aminu.
While these two heavyweights have
been duking it out in Class AAAAA for
much of the past decade, Miller Grove has
staked its claim in Class AAAA. The Wolverines have won the past two state titles
under head coach Sharman White’s leadership and look to make it three in 2011. “The
Grove” dominated previously unbeaten
Sequoyah in the second round by a not-soclose score of 72-53. Three more wins and
Miller Grove will put itself in position to be
the next great Georgia hoops dynasty.
Other impressive boys dynasties were
Westover with four consecutive Class AAAA
state titles from 1990-1993 and Woodbury
from 1981-1985. Woodbury’s five straight
titles are the most consecutive in the modern
era for a boys team.
recent dynasty was Collins Hill’s run of
five Class AAAAA titles between 2001 and
2007. Current Connecticut star Maya Moore
helped key three straight titles from 20052007, including a national title in 2007. The
Lady Eagles’ run came to an end the year
Moore graduated, as they have not won a
state playoff game since.
The Hart County girls may be the
most impressive dynasty of all, as the Lady
Bulldogs won six Class AAAA state titles
in a row from 1989-1994. That run set the
record for most consecutive state championships in the modern era of Georgia high
school basketball.
Southwest DeKalb won three titles in
a row in Class AAAA from 2008-2010, but
were upset by Carver (Atlanta) in the region
tournament and saw the streak end.
Also impressive were runs by Lowndes
from 1977-1980 (four straight titles) and Cherokee from 1967-1976 (five titles in that span).

Elite Eight in Georgia boasts some of the best young basketball talent anywhere
G
eorgia is a state widely known for its high
school football, where numerous players
move on and play at some of the top universities in the country. But high school basketball is no different in this state as some of the
nation’s top prospects will be on display this
weekend during the GHSA quarterfinals. At
places such as the University of West Georgia or Marietta High School, you will likely
see some of the future stars of the NCAA and
possibly the NBA. Here are some of the top
prospects that will be playing this weekend.
BOYS BALLERS …
Milton is the defending Class AAAAA
champions and they are primed to win another title with the supreme talent they have
on their roster. In fact, the Eagles have their
version of the “Big 3” in Shannon Scott, DaiJon Parker and Julian Royal.
Scott is considered to be the best point
guard in the state and he does a great job taking command of the Eagles, which is one of
the many reasons they are the team to beat
in AAAAA. He has signed with Ohio State
and should not have a problem fitting into
Thad Matta’s system. Parker, one of the top
shooting guards in the country, is known for
his athleticism and great defense. He will take
his talents to Vanderbilt University. Royal is
a very cersatile power forward who is effective under the basket or at the perimeter. He
has signed with Georgia Tech and the Yellow
Jackets hope he can bring them back to the
promised land.
As good as those three are, there is one
player at Greenville who could be the best
player in the state. Shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is very aggressive when it
comes to scoring and is also great behind the
arc. Caldwell-Pope has led the Patriots to
an undefeated record in Region 4-A, which
makes them one of the favorites to win the
Class A title. He will play for the Georgia
Bulldogs next season and he will be an impact player for the Bulldogs, especially if
Trey Thompkins and Travis Leslie decide to
enter the NBA draft.
Two other players to watch are Nick
Jacobs from South Atlanta and Kevin Ware
from Rockdale County. Jacobs, a power forward, is a great finisher and is one of the best
rebounders in the state. He scored 17 points
in the second round game against Rockmart.
He will join Anthony Grant and the Alabama
Crimson Tide next season. Meanwhile, Ware
led Rockdale County to a great season because of his competitive spirit and his explosiveness. He will be wearing orange next season, signing with the Tennessee Volunteers.
GREAT GIRLS …
Over on the girls side, Norcross is the
team to beat in Class AAAAA, which is
partially due to DeArica Hamby, one of the
best forwards in the country. Hamby uses her
6-foot-3 size to be effective under the basket,
but can keep defenders honest with a 15-foot
jumper. She will play for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons next year.
Fayette County always puts out great
teams and this year is no different. Their top
player is Brianna Banks who could be the best
player in the country. The 5-foot-9 guard is
the only player from Georgia who will take
w w w . ghsa . n e t
part in the elite McDonalds High School AllAmerican game. She will play for the Connecticut Huskies next year. If everything goes
well for Banks she could be included among
the top players ever at UConn, a school that
has produced such greats as Maya Moore (a
former Collins Hill star) and Diana Taurasi,
among others.
Other players to watch are Erika Ford
from Chattahoochee and Kristina Wells from
Douglas County. Ford rebounded from an injury that kept her out for much of the regular
season to help lead “The Hooch” to the Elite
Eight. Alexis Alexander and Kayla Upchurch
are two other Lady Cougars who will be playing at the next level.
Meanwhile, some have said Wells is
underrated and could be a very good college
player. She has the ability to create her own
shot and can take over a game like she did
against Mays in the previous round of the playoffs, scoring 25 points in the win. It looks like
Kennesaw State got a steal by signing Wells.

AAAAA
Great Basketball Action!
By Sean Conway
Girls
Last Friday night there were pretenders and princesses on the hardwood. Now, after two rounds of
basketball in the girls Class AAAAA tournament, the brackets have been paired down to eight teams. Seven teams
still alive are serious, worthy contenders, and one team will be state champions. This weekend’s matchups feature
the best of the best. In two of the quarterfinal matchups at Fort Valley State, all the teams will probably be feeling
déjà-vu. One squad, Campbell from Region 4, faces a county neighbor from their region in North Cobb (all four teams
from Region 4 to qualify for state are in the Elite Eight). Campbell won the region tournament, but North Cobb won
the regular season title. Consider this game a backyard brawl moved to a neighbor’s house. On the other side of the
bracket, two other Region 4 teams, McEachern and Hillgrove, tip it off at FVSU. McEachern defeated Bradwell Institute 50-25 in their Sweet 16 matchup, while Hillgrove cruised past Tift County 60-33. No matter what happens over
the weekend, two Cobb teams will make the Final Four and could meet in the final. Georgia’s most highly-regarded
team, the talent-laden Norcross Lady Blue Devils from Region 7, will face a scrappy, improving Milton squad. The
Lady Eagles took third in their region bracket but have upset Parkview 46-36 and Region 5 powerhouse, Etowah 3937. In the other quarterfinal at West Georgia, another region champ, Roswell, faces a battle-tested underdog in Mill
Creek. The Lady Hawks beat Roswell’s Region 6 rival Northview, 64-62, to punch their ticket.
BOYS
Sports fanatics look forward to celebrating March Madness every year. In Georgia, fans are lucky, as
they don’t have to wait two extra weeks when the college tournaments get started. The Elite Eight of the Class AAAAA
boys tournament features enough young talent to make a serious run in any tournament, anywhere. The quarterfinals
at the University of West Georgia m ay be the best collection of college-ready Georgians ever. In one matchup, perennial powers Norcross and Wheeler will face off. Both teams are loaded with future collegians, like Blue Devils E. Victor
Nickerson and Josiah Moore. Nickerson will play at UNC-Charlotte and Moore at Nebraska next year. Wheeler starting
guards, K. K. Simmons and Nigel Snipes, will play at UNC-Wilmington and Western Kentucky, respectively. Also at UWG,
Milton meets Mill Creek. The Eagles feature Ohio State signee Shannon Scott and Vandy signee Dai-Jon Parker, as well
as Georgia Tech signee Julian Royal. Mill Creek features Samford signee Brandon Haymon. All four teams meeting at
Fort Valley State scorched through their region tournaments and the first two rounds at state. First, Newton plays Valdosta. Senior forward Derrick Henry has paced Newton in comfortable wins over Hillgrove and Jenkins. Valdosta has won
their tourney games by an average of 22 points thus far. Following the Newton-Valdosta clash will be Savannah versus
Tift County. Junior Todric Jackson lifted the Blue Devils past Westlake 54-50 in the second round with a late steal and
lay-up, while Western Carolina commit James Sinclair leads Savannah.

Douglas County enters the quarterfinals without a loss all season. They’ve dominated the competition all
year and have their eyes set on a state title. Center Christin Mercer is a tough matchup in the post, while Kristina Wells does
much of the scoring. Miller Grove will be their opponent in the quarterfinals. The Lady Wolverines have matched their muchpublicized male counterparts thus far, and did well to beat Region 7 champion Creekview in the last round behind do-it-all
post player Tabitha Fudge. Forest Park’s biggest contributors are point guard Ashlee Cole and center Keyonna Allen, who both
dropped double-digits in the second round. Statesboro can hurt you many ways, with power forward Alisia Jenkins, small
forward Sierra Kirkland, and guards Raven Thomas and Shanice Walker all being productive this season. Chattahoochee
responded well from a disappointing loss in their region championship game, as they have won by double digits in both playoff
games. Kayla Upchurch, Erika Ford and Alexis Alexander are the keys to the Lady Cougars’ success. Chattahoochee faces
Clarke Central in the Elite Eight. The Lady Gladiators lost just one region game this year. Fayette Co. went undefeated in region
play and have a world of confidence heading into their quarterfinal matchup with Warner Robins. Brianna Banks does a lot of
the scoring from shooting guard. Elem Ibiam does the dirty work in the paint. Tom Mobley’s Demonettes are in the quarterfinals
for the first time since 1996. Guards Kenyona Armstrong and Diamond Hudson lead the way.

BOYS
BOYS
Miller Grove has been the team to beat from day one, and they will remain a favorite when they play Villa
Rica Friday. The Wolverines are lead by junior big man Tony Parker. The double-double machine is getting college offers
from all the big boys and is just one of many stars on coach Sharman White’s squad. Meanwhile, the Wildcats rallied back
incredibly from an 18-point fourth quarter deficit to beat Tucker. They don’t have Miller Grove’s size, but they do have a
fine backcourt at their disposal with Orlandis Hill and Dee Thompson. Jonesboro is a team to watch after winning by a
combined 64 points in the first two rounds. Add in silky smooth Rasham Suarez, one of the top point guards around, and
you’ve got a dangerous team. They’ll face a North Clayton team that has already been tested after winning two close games
in the tournament so far. They rely heavily on wings Devin Lewis and Marcus Hunt. Fayette County has one of the state’s
top scorers in Adam Smith. He scored 50 in a game earlier this season and had 22 in the second round victory. Big man
Ekene Anachebe gives them an effective force in the post. The Tigers face a balanced team in Lovejoy. They’ll get a lot of
scoring from guards Jermaine Hough and DeAngelo Anthony, as well as center Justin Tuoyo. SW DeKalb has peaked at the
right time with eight straight wins, and have one of the state’s top players in 6-foot-8 William Goodwin. Next up for them is
Rockdale Co. and dynamic 6-foot-5 point guard Kevin Ware.

The first and second rounds of the Class AA girls state tournament went mostly according to form, with five
No. 1 seeds and a trio of No. 2 seeds making up the Elite Eight. One of the few region winners still alive is Buford (26-3),
the two-time defending state champion. The Wolves booked their fifth consecutive trip to the quarterfinals with a 55-41 win
over East Hall and a 72-39 thrashing of Heard County. Two teams that finished ahead of Buford in the final regular season
rankings, however, remain serious threats to the Wolves. Top-ranked Kendrick (29-0) has rolled into the last eight with easy
victories over River Ridge and Lovett, while No. 5 Greater Atlanta Christian (23-7) has made light work of Union County and
Calhoun. The good news for Buford is that Kendrick and GAC must face each other in a brutal quarterfinal matchup. Up next
for the Wolves, though, is Region 8 champion Rabun County (27-3). Should Buford get past the Wildcats, it would likely go
up against third-ranked Laney (28-1) in the semifinals. Laney is undefeated against in-state competition this season and the
Wildcats, champions of Region 3-AA, are riding a 27-game winning streak. They have won seven consecutive contests by at
least 16 points and their two state-tournament victories have come by a combined 112 points (74-22 over Albany and 91-31
against Tattnall County). Laney first meets Morgan County, while Dodge County—which upset Vidalia in round two—takes on
Northeast Macon in the fourth quarterfinal clash.
BOYS
No. 1 seeds in the Class AA boys state basketball tournament apparently forgot that the top teams are supposed to suffer early upsets when it comes to March Madness. Five of the eight quarterfinalists are No. 1 seeds, including all
four on the side of the bracket that features Greater Atlanta Christian, Thomasville, East Hall and Swainsboro. Two of the three
survivors that are not No. 1 seeds are from powerhouse Region 6-AA, which boasts three of the best squads in the entire state.
GAC captured the region title, leaving South Atlanta as the No. 2 seed and Buford at No. 3. Both the Hornets and Wolves have
advanced, while Laney—which finished second in Region 3—and Lamar County—the winner of Region 4—round out this
year’s Elite Eight. GAC is the reigning state champion and its title defense is off to a strong start. The second-ranked Spartans
(25-5) handled Elbert County 66-45 in round one and took care of Jordan 69-47 on Wednesday to extend their winning streak
to 12 games. GAC, though, faces a tough road with East Hall (25-5) looming on Friday and Thomasville (26-3) lurking as a
potential semifinal opponent. In the other half of the bracket, South Atlanta and Buford are set for an all-Region 6 quarterfinal
showdown. The Hornets (28-2) are ranked No. 1, but both of their losses have come to GAC. They won the Class AAA state title
in 2009 and reached the third round last season before moving to Class AA.

Girls
Of the eight teams that are left in the girls’ bracket, there is only one No.1 seed remaining, Wesleyan. Of the
seven other teams there are five No. 2 seeds, a No. 3 seed and one preliminary qualifier. The lone preliminary qualifier to
make it to the quarterfinals, Pace Academy, is no pushover. The Lady Knights have a 25-5 record, and two of those five losses
have come against their opponent in the quarterfinals, St. Francis. The Lady Knights of St. Francis are a No. 2 seed; however,
they are not your run of the mill, everyday No. 2 seed. St. Francis reached the quarterfinals with a 25-3 record, but all three
of their defeats came at the hands of Wesleyan. Otherwise, St. Francis beat every team they faced, and in dominant fashion
as well. Early this season, the Lady Knights defeated Callaway 67-8. The team everyone is looking to beat is Wesleyan. The
Lady Wolves are the defending state champions and as the lone No.1 seed left in the tournament, they are in a good position
to repeat. Led by their only senior, Grace Leah Baughn, Wesleyan compiled a 28-2 record on the road to the quarterfinals with
their two defeats coming at the hands of Class AAAAA power Norcross and a Class AAAA team from South Carolina that is still
undefeated this year, Spring Valley. Any of the other five teams could step up and knock off Wesleyan. As this tournament has
shown so far, anything is possible.
BOYS
There will be a new boys basketball champion in Class A this year after Wesleyan’s elimination in the first
round, and there are eight teams still around that are ready to step up and take the reigns as the top team in the state’s smallest classification. Coming into the tournament, Wilkinson County was the top-ranked team and the lone unbeaten. Whitefield
Academy also spent time during the season in the No. 1 spot, and the Wolfpack enter the quarterfinals with a 27-3 record.
Whitefield has won 23 of their last 24 games. Other than Wilkinson County, the next hottest team entering the quarterfinals
might be Greenville. The Patriots started the season 0-2 and have since rattled off 26 wins in 27 games and haven’t lost since
December. So far, the favorites have dominated this tournament, as seven of the eight teams remaining are No. 1 seeds. Turner
County, a No. 2 seed, is the only non-No. 1 to advance. The Rebels have had an interesting season thus far. Before losing to
Wilcox County in the region championship game, Turner County lost eight games in the form of four two-game losing streaks.
Another team that has impressed people in the tournament is Wilcox County. The Patriots feature dual-sport star Nick Marshall. The guard/quarterback has already signed to play football at Georgia, and has led Wilcox County to a 23-2 record on the
way to the quarterfinals. But the best hoops player in Class A may be Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who suits up for Greenville.
Caldwell-Pope has signed to play for Georgia next season.
