World-class USMLE preparation
Kaplan Medical’s USMLE course provides intensive preparation to medical doctors through
centre-based learning. The USMLE is a set of general exams for medical doctors, assessing a
physician’s ability to apply knowledge, concepts and principles, constituting the basis of safe
and effective patient care.
Kaplan Medical’s approach to USMLE
preparation allows students to study at their
own pace and provides access to innovative
resources like the Personal Learning System
(PLS), Qbank and streamed lectures which
compliment the Kaplan Medical Lecture
Notes. Our course content is critically
reviewed and selected based on areas that
are most likely to be tested and are most
important for your exam success!
Course Structure
Each step will follow the basic pattern below:
• Materials reviews
• Chapter quizzes and subject assessment
tests
• Course mid term and final full-length
simulated exam, including comprehensive
critical performance feedback and analysis
to target your weaker areas
Course Resources & Materials
Comprehensive course resources and
preparation materials include:
• World-class video lectures by expert tutors
• Acclaimed Kaplan lecture notes
• Access to the Personal Learning System
• Qbank and Qbank Plus, which includes
practice questions, test taking strategy
guide and subject-based assessment tests
with detailed explanations
Personal Learning System
The Personal Learning System is a
revolutionary online course component
designed to ensure that you fully understand
the review material as you progress through
the disciplines.
Following each chapter in the lecture notes,
the PLS will produce a quiz or assessment
test. PLS will then pinpoint the remediation
required, and will generate mini online
lectures and direct you to specific page
numbers to go back and review – all
according to your specific weaknesses
demonstrated by your performance. In
addition, you will also receive performance
feedback by organ system, discipline, topic,
subtopic and physician task.
Qbank
Qbank, incorporated in your USMLE
preparation, is a state of the art question
bank, with innovative features including
personal test analysis and Score Estimator.
It is a targeted and realistic way to prep, the
‘reKap’ feature provides summarised highyield reviews, related to each question.
You can create customised tests by organ
system or discipline or track your performance
with our score comparison feature, only found
on Kaplan Medical’s Qbank.

Residency Match and US Residency Training
The Step 2 Clinical Skills (CS) exam is a “hands-on” exam that tests
the examinee’s clinical and communication skills through his/her
ability to gather information from standardised patients, perform a
physical examination, communicate the findings to the patient and
write a patient note.
1. ECFMG Certification
2. Enrol in NRMP
3. Apply using ERAS
4. Interviewing at residency
programmes
Step 3 assesses the examinee’s ability to apply medical knowledge
and the understanding of biomedical and clinical science essential
for the unsupervised practice of medicine, with emphasis on patient
management in independent settings. This exam is taken during the
Match application season.
Most hospitals select residency candidates from applicants who
participate in the “Match.” This system of matching candidates
to residency training positions allows you to interview and rank
preferences, while simultaneously allowing the hospitals to rank
those they have interviewed. The preference lists are merged by
computer at the National Resident Matching Programme (NRMP,
www.nrmp.org). Results are announced annually in March.
5. Rank programmes
6. If no match, “scramble” or reapply
following year
Generally, programmes look for USMLE scores above 200/82, the
higher the better. They also prefer US hospital experience and
letters of recommendation from physicians with whom you have
worked. A personal statement outlining goals, reasons for entering
the profession, and special interests is also required. Plan ahead to
ensure that you are able to meet the various Match deadlines.
