Newest Official Partner and the Official Tir
of Tread Lightly!
T IR E
On March 25th, in the spirit of spring,
Tread Lightly! is embracing the new and
is proud to announce Falken Tire as our
newest Official Partner and the Official
Tire company of Tread Lightly!.
“Falken Tire is establishing itself as one
of Tread Lightly!’s top-tier partners from
the get-go,” said, Lori McCullough, Tread
Lightly!’s executive director. “Not only
are they providing a cash investment to
the nonprofit organization, Falken has
also agreed to aggressively help grow
Tread Lightly!’s grassroots base by
providing the tire rebates as part of the
package of benefits that comes with the
privilege of an individual’s membership in
Tread Lightly!.”
As part of their partnership, Falken
has pledged a $100 rebate on a set of
WildPeak A/T tires to individuals who
join Tread Lightly!’s membership at the
$50 level and above. As an incentive for
individuals to renew their membership in
Tread Lightly!, Falken is providing a $50

and Respected Access is Open Access,”
said McCullough. “Falken’s contribution
is expected to make a tremendous
difference in the organization’s ability to
reach more and more enthusiasts within
the outdoor recreation community.”
rebate to any person who renews their
existing membership at the base level of
$25 and up.
“Members of Tread Lightly! are a crucial
contributor to Tread Lightly!’s ability to
educate the public on the importance of
responsible recreation by enhancing and
promoting existing programs such as
Tread Trainer, Restoration for Recreation
“We’re eager to embark on this mutually
beneficial partnership,” said Nick
Fousekis, Motorsports Marketing and
Events Director. “We’re proud to stand
next to Tread Lightly! in promoting
responsible recreation. Now more than
ever it’s important for Falken to invest
in OHV recreation and to foster good
stewards so we ensure access and
opportunities to enjoy recreation as part
of America’s heritage for current and
future generations to come.”
Tread Lightly! Unveils Bold New Website
As a top priority to better communicate
in an increasingly digital world, Tread
Lightly! has recently revamped its
website. With a bold new design, ultraeasy navigation and multiple points of
entry, this valuable mechanism used to
connect with the public is now better
than ever before.
According to Lori McCullough, Tread
Lightly!’s executive director, some of the
top-priorities for revamping the website
were to improve access to educational
materials as well as increase store sales

and member interactivity. The main
desire for growing sales through the store
is to generate revenues for Restoration
for Recreation – a Tread Lightly! initiative
established to help keep the great
outdoors healthy, open and accessible to
the American people.
With the improved website and store,
Tread Lightly! is busy increasing the
product offerings available through
its store. The majority of new product
offerings will be Tread Lightly! branded
merchandise, ranging from t-shirts to
after-market automotive accessories.

Recreation
Sponsor in Restoration for
Earlier this year, Tread Lightly! proudly
welcomed John Deere as its newest
sponsor in Restoration for Recreation™,
an initiative established to create an evergrowing alliance of public and private
sponsors donating funds to keep the
great outdoors healthy, accessible and
open to the public for the benefits and
enjoyment of responsible recreation.
Originally launched by Tread Lightly! circa
1997, the primary goal of Restoration
for Recreation is to generate voluntary
funding from the private sector to
leverage with the limited resources
of government agencies responsible
for managing recreation on America’s
public lands and waters. Restoration
for Recreation projects can range from a
simple litter clean-up to restoring habitat
or maintaining and making improvements
to recreational assets like a network
of trails or campgrounds, even new
construction of a facility.
As a pilot Restoration for Recreation
project, John Deere donated cash and
volunteers and the local John Deere
Dealer, James River Equipment in
Asheboro, NC donated the use of heavy
equipment, as well as volunteers to help
offset some of the costs incurred by the
U.S. Forest Service to manage the use of
Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs) on one of
the country’s most heavily visited national
forests – the Uwharrie National Forest.
Situated between North Carolina’s
growing metropolises of Raleigh,
Greensboro and Charlotte, the project
has helped to promote resource
stewardship throughout the Badin Lake
OHV Trail Complex by constructing
three new informational trailhead kiosks,
installing approximately 700 feet of
wooden guiderail and mitigating impacts
to water quality from the use of OHVs in
the forest.
A special thanks to representatives from
the Uwharrie Off Road Training Center for
their dedication to ensuring this project’s
success and the Southern Four Wheel
Drive Association for engaging volunteers
and also donating heavy equipment to be
used to complete this vital stewardship
project.

Tread Lightly! Principles Incorporated to Cur
rd
for Scouts to Earn a New Outdoor Ethics Awa
We’ve recently taken a giant step forward
with our partnership with the Boy Scouts
of America (BSA) – a relationship officially
formed in June, 2010 through the signing
of a Memorandum of Understanding.
The giant step comes in the form of
major changes the BSA has announced
to their Outdoor Ethics program.
Beginning this year, the message of
Tread Lightly! and its principles are
now officially a prominent part of the
curriculum required for a Scout to earn
the new Outdoor Ethics award.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled about this
evolution in our partnership with the
Scouts,” said Lori McCullough, Tread
Lightly!’s executive director. “With the
incorporation of Tread Lightly!’s principles
into their outdoor ethics programming,
the BSA is retiring what was previously
known as a Leave No Trace award and
introducing a new Outdoor Ethics award
and teaching a broader curriculum to
America’s youth.”
According to Brian Gray, the National
Outdoor Program Coordinator, the new
Outdoor Ethics Award program has three
components.
• The Awareness Award, which is
an award tailored for youth and
adults just joining the program that
introduces them to BSA outdoor
ethics principles, such as the
Outdoor Code and the principles
of Tread Lightly! and Leave No
Trace. The award is a patch and is
earned once by any BSA member.
• The Action Award, which is an award
tailored for youth that have been
participating in the BSA program
for a while and wish to deepen
their understanding of outdoor
ethics and improve their skills in
implementing them. This is primarily
a youth award, although it has an
adult counterpart that recognizes
adults who support youth in earning
the award. The award is a speciallydesigned nametag and may be
earned at each BSA program level.
Ethics Advocate or staffer on
training courses, and have used
that training to help teach others
outdoor ethics principles. The
service award(s) are reflected on
the specially-designed name tag
referenced and can be earned
once by a qualified BSA member.
Tread Lightly!’s educational message,
along with its training and restoration
initiatives, are designed to instill an
ethic of responsibility in all outdoor
enthusiasts. The overall goal of the
organization is to balance the needs of
people who enjoy outdoor recreation
with our need to maintain a healthy
environment.
Read more about these changes on
the BSA website.
• Service Recognition, which
recognizes youth or adults who have
completed advanced training as a

Falken Tire

Falken Tire, a Sumitomo Rubber Industries brand, is a well-known, stand-alone brand that
focuses on UHP (Ultra High Performance) products while utilizing professional motorsports
to further develop and improve products for worldwide distribution. Three short years
ago, Falken Tire set out to build its name in the Off-Road segment. By taking a hands-on
approach and getting dirty, Falken hit the trails with its WildPeak A/T tires.
It wasn’t long before people started noticing the performance and durability
of the WildPeak A/T in a wide-range terrain and driving conditions. Falken is
proud to further invest in the off road community as the Official Tire of Tread

Ethics Situation
“Do what you can, with what you have,
where you are.” ~Theodore Roosevelt
In each issue we’ll be asking you, the
reader, to respond using the TREAD
program principles to situations we all
experience while enjoying our favorite
outdoor recreation activities. Access to
America’s public and private lands and
waterways is disappearing at an alarming
rate due to irresponsible behaviors and
social conflicts associated with these
issues.
Tread Lightly! is an educational non-profit
dedicated to promoting outdoor ethics
education and stewardship since 1985
and we are counting on all of you to “do
what you can, with what you have, where
you are.”
Situation:
You are riding on a defined trail open
to ATVs, but with signs asking you to
stay on the trail because of the fragile
ecosystem and various wildlife habitats
native to the area you are recreating in.
You see another rider coming back onto
the trail through the scrub on the right
of your location, and feel motivated to
address the individual and educate them
of the designated routes system you are
following from the MVUM (Motorized
Education efforts and opportunities here
at Tread Lightly! have been going strong.
Thanks to increases in funding we have
been able to offer education courses
all over the nation. We have seen a
huge increase in requests from the Boy
Scouts of America for Master Tread
Trainer courses, and we look forward
to providing this education to teach

proper outdoor ethics to our youth. In
Utah, our RIDE ON Designated Routes
message is in high gear with education
courses being offered all over the state.
We are also all over the nation providing
outreach and education to a variety of
users. We look forward to a busy and
productive year on the education front.
Member Spotlight
I have loved OHV recreation since I was 8
years old. I started riding dirt bikes, then
ATVs and now bigger toys like 4WDs
and 6x6 Dump Trucks! I really didn’t
get heavy into the sport until the 80s
when OHVs were really starting to grow
quickly and the environmental impact
was becoming obvious. OHVs were not
respected and their demise was a serious
concern and possibility.
I started volunteering with the USFS in
the Uwharrie National Forest in 1986.
Wow, it was great! I got to enjoy the
outdoors, expand my knowledge of
proper land management, meet new
lifelong friends and input my desires
for the future of the OHV trail system.
During that time I was also introduced to
Tread Lightly! and wore the ‘Endangered
Species’ bumper sticker proudly on my
4WD work truck! I have been involved
ever since – that’s 27 years.
I have recently started an OHV training
center at Uwharrie with a passion for the
sport like never before. I regularly teach
Tread Lightly! in my classes and I enjoy
all the new friends I make. Hopefully I am
making a difference. Hopefully I can instill
in others the ethics and values of Tread
Lightly! and make new ‘Respecters’ of
the environment and ‘Respecters’ of
others on the trail.
over the years. Bottom line, Tread
Lightly! has helped my favorite sport,
now my full-time job, survive!
I personally believe Tread Lightly! has
played a big part in the positive growth
and respect OHV recreation has gained
