Tread Lightly! To Hold Major Charity Auction on eBay
In an effort to raise money to
combat urgent outdoor recreation
issues on public land, Tread
Lightly!® is holding a major charity
auction on eBay, June 2-11.
“Recreation access has come to
a pivotal crossroads this year,”
said Tread Lightly!’s executive
director Lori McCullough. “Tread
Lightly! needs to grow its resources
immediately to implement several
education, communications and
restoration initiatives designed to
protect the outdoors and access.”
More than 150 items have
been generously donated from
companies across the country
for the cause, including a new
UTV from John Deere, new 4x4
products, powersports accessories
and plenty of outdoor gear.

General Motor’s HUMMER® division and Tread Lightly!
announced the launch of a new partnership called
HUMMER’s Recreation Rescue, which will provide
grants to outdoor recreation sites in need of education,
management and trail maintenance.
“This partnership comes at a critical time, especially for
recreation activities involving the use of off-highway
vehicles,” said Tread Lightly!’s executive director Lori
McCullough. “These grants will help land management
agencies implement their new travel management
policies in a way that helps both recreationists and the
great outdoors.”
HUMMER’s Recreation
Rescue was created under
the umbrella of Tread Lightly!’s
Restoration for Recreation™ program. Restoration
for Recreation is designed to keep the great outdoors
beautiful, healthy and open to the public by providing
much needed resources for trail maintenance,
education and communications initiatives to allow for
environmentally sustainable outdoor recreation.
Project sites already selected for 2008 include offhighway vehicle areas in the Sierra National Forest in
Central California and the Ocala National Forest in
Florida. Other sites are currently under consideration
and will be announced by the beginning of summer.
Volunteers will be needed to re-seed, install signage and
kiosks, build trail enhancements and do other important
tasks.
The initiative will kick off with a project on the popular
Bald Mountain off-highway vehicle trail in the Sierra
National Forest. Funding and volunteers will help
provide trail maintenance, install signage, print quality
maps and increase education.

Do Your Part: Pack It In, Pack MORE Out
• Often, when we open a granola bar or a bag of
jerky, that little corner of the bag of the wrapper
flies off in the breeze. That micro trash adds up.
When you take a few minutes to repackage your
food in re-sealable bags before you hit the trail, you
leave that micro trash at home.
Litter is a huge problem on our public lands. From
illegal dumping in boundary areas to the simple
carelessness of leaving behind cans or wrappers, litter
accumulates quickly. There are many things you can do
to keep your favorite natural areas clean and healthy.
• Always bring an extra garbage bag to pick up litter
left by others. Stop along the trail and pick up
trash or spend a few minutes at the end of the day
cleaning up a trailhead. Your actions may grab the
attention of others, and they too may help out with
your impromptu clean up.
• Join other recreationists in a trail clean up. Large
groups of people can move tons of garbage out
of an area in a day. Sharing the work with other
recreationists brings ownership of the area to
all who spend time there. If you organize one
yourself, let us know and we can publicize the
event to local members in your area.
• Pack out what you pack in. Never burn or bury
trash.
