Increase
its Outreach to the Hunting, Fishing
and Shooting Sports Communities
Tread Lightly!’s connection
with the hunting, shooting, and fishing
enthusiast communities was jump
started when 40 organizations signed on
to the Federal Lands Hunting, Fishing,
and Shooting Sports Roundtable
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
with the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau
of Land Management. A clause in the
MOU encourages these organizations
to promote outdoor ethics, like those
developed by Tread Lightly! to their
constituents. Some of the organizations
signed on the MOU Roundtable include
Auction items include a new Grizzly
550 ATV from Yamaha and a custombuilt 2007 Jeep Wrangler from BDS
Suspension, as well as other outdoor
gear and accessories.
“There has never been a more important
time to give back to the outdoors,”
said Tread Lightly!’s executive director
Lori McCullough. “In order to protect
recreation access in these dynamic
times, we have to act immediately to
implement special communications,
education, and restoration programs
now. This auction will make that
possible.”
Tread Lightly! is Working to
Safari Club International, National
Shooting Sports Foundation, Izaak
Walton League of America, National
Rifle Association, Delta Waterfowl
Foundation and The National Wild
Turkey Federation.
The Roundtable has commissioned
Tread Lightly! to develop a national
shooting sports education and outreach
campaign. The campaign will focus
on reducing litter, property damage
and environmental impacts from
irresponsible shooting on public land.
Ten Ways To Minimize Your
More than 175 items will be auctioned to benefit Tread Lightly!, including this custom-built 2007 Jeep
Wrangler from BDS Suspension. The Jeep features the X package, a long arm suspension system,
custom bumpers, rocker guards and a Warn 9500 lb. winch.
Impact With An ROV
6. When winching, always inspect
Tread Lightly!
your equipment, use the right
winch for the situation, find a
good secure anchor, and never
winch with less than five wraps
of wire rope around the drum.
When using a tree as an anchor,
use a wide tree strap to avoid
damage to the trunk of the tree.
Teams Up With
Equestrian Land Conservation Resource
In an effort to help equestrians
and all outdoor enthusiasts protect
their trail access on public lands, while
also helping avoid conflict amongst
trail users, Tread Lightly! has formed a
strategic alliance with the Equestrian
Land Conservation Resource (ELCR).
The alliance was formed because
access to healthy public lands and
waters for the enjoyment of responsible
recreation is of paramount importance
to both organizations. ELCR has also
identified the loss of open land as a great
threat to the future of all equestrian sport,
recreation, and industry.
7. Obtain a map of your destination
With the emerging market for
Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles
(ROVs), it is now more important than
ever to practice minimal impact riding.
The industry is referring to side by
sides and Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTVs)
as Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles
(ROVs).
1. Travel only in areas open to ROVs.
2. It is not acceptable to drive
2
ROVs wider than 50 inches
on most designated allterrain vehicle (ATV) trails.
3. Cross streams only at designated
fording points or where the
trail crosses the stream. Cross
slowly at a 90 degree angle.
4. Do not carry passengers
in the bed of an ROV.
5. Buddy up with two or three
drivers. Driving solo can leave you
vulnerable if you have an accident
or breakdown. Designate meeting
areas in case of separation.
and determine which areas
are open to ROVs.
8. Make sure you and each passenger
in the vehicle wears a seatbelt.
9. Make sure your ROV is
mechanically up to task. Be
prepared with appropriate tools,
supplies, spares and an oil spill kit
for trailside repairs and cleanup.
10. Before and after a trip, wash your
ROV and support vehicle to reduce
the spread of invasive species.

Bring your own Water Bottle
We all drink water, especially when
we are outside enjoying an ATV ride
or a hike through the woods. The
convenience of bottled water is
understandable, but we need to look
beyond convenience to the impacts of
bottled water on the environment. A
few statistics:
1. Americans consume more than
28 billion water bottles a year,
less than 20% are recycled.
That is more than 22 billion that
end up in landfills or trashed on
the side of the road or trail.
2. Plastic water bottles can take as
long as 1,000 years to degrade.
3. Some estimate that it takes
approximately two liters of
water to produce every one
liter found on a store shelf.
4. Producing the plastic bottles
burns about 1.5 million gallons
of oil a year, enough
to run 100,000 cars. That is on
top of the 500,000 gallons of
oil used per year to transport
bottled water to retail outlets.
If the impacts on the environment are not
motivation enough, then let us look at the
cost to your wallet. You buy a 20 ounce
bottle of water for one dollar—that is five
cents per ounce or $6.40 a gallon. Most
municipal water systems charge less
than one cent per gallon. An inexpensive
water filter is a great alternative, and will
improve the taste of tap water if that is an
issue for you.
What can you do? Invest in a reusable
water bottle. Use it for work, home and
play. If you are a club or a business,
supply large jugs or coolers at events
or in the workplace where you had
previously supplied bottled water and
remind participants/employees to bring
their own reusable water bottle. Finally,
support Tread Lightly! and buy yourself a
swanky Tread Lightly! water bottle.
