The RD’s Corner, by Bert Smith
Greetings Tifosi!
Your FCA national board is doing many things to expand your club. Today, only about 10% of Ferrari
owners belong to the FCA. We want to increase that to at least 15%. Mike Lambert is working on a
new web site for the club that will be available to regions. It will be much easier to use and will have
online sign-up for payments and events. Joe Adams, our national president, is developing channel
and content managers for Facebook, Twitter, Ferrari Chat, etc., to inform all owners and admirers
about the activities of the Ferrari Club of America. Diane Peterson is the national membership
chairperson who is organizing a drive for new members. The national office is also placing
brochures in dealerships and garages across the country. There are some really great prizes to see
who can sign up the most members. See page 10 and 11 for more information. More members across
the USA means more events and funding.
This years annual meet is going to be in the Washington/Virginia region. There will be 3 track days,
Challenge Racing and two levels of karting competition. Are you going? Have you been to the web
site (FCA2014.org)? Would you help coordinate logistics for the event?
For 2015 the national meet will be in Monterey the week following Pebble Beach, August 16th
through the 19th. The track will be Laguna Seca. In 2016 the national meet will be in Columbus,
Ohio and the exciting Mid Ohio Track, June 18th through the 20th.
We are looking for a Rocky Mountain Region Club Photographer, a Membership Director and an
Activities Director. Please contact one of the board members.
Are you willing to help plan an event? What do you have in mind? Please contact Bert Smith or one
of the other board members.
Do you have an interest in being on the Regional Board of Directors? Start thinking about it! All
positions will be up for re-election this fall and new terms will begin January 2015. We will be
assembling Board candidates in late summer.
Ciao!
Bert Smith

Ferrari reported a net profit of 246 million euros, or $342 million,
for 2013, an increase of 5.4 percent. That sum amounted to 27
percent of the profit of its parent company, Fiat Chrysler
Automobiles, even though the number of Ferraris was a tiny
percentage of the 4.4 million vehicles sold by the group.

The Citrus Circuit: Sebring in the Dark Ages
By Larry Perkins
In the early 1950s, a bucolic little town sat snugly on “The Ridge” in Central Florida. Surrounded by
orange groves, and sporting the elegant but obscure Harder Hall resort and its golf course, Sebring
snoozed in the subtropical sun. Then, Alec Ulmann discovered Hendricks Field, a U.S. Army Air
Forces training base, 7 miles from town, and nothing has been the same since.
Alec, an engineer and sports car enthusiast, perceived that the recently deactivated airfield had great
possibilities as a race course. The post-war influx of European sports cars to America had spawned a
road-racing fervor across the country, and abandoned airports – imaginatively marked off with hay
bales, peach baskets, and occasionally steel drums! - provided excellent ready-made venues for these
events. Florida itself was eventually dotted with them – Dunnellon, Osceola, Sebastian, Vero Beach,
Fernandina, Kissimmee (today occupied by something called “Disney World”).
Using a map of Hendricks’ runways, service streets and hangars, Ulmann laid out a fairly-complex
closed-circuit road course. It had some nice long straights, a variety of corners, including a couple of
“esses” and a real “hairpin”. Smooth asphalt roads intersected with rugged concrete bomber runways,
making up in “texture” for the lack of undulating terrain on the pool-table-flat layout. It was fast and
interesting, the length was a decent 5.2 miles, and the basic blueprint remained virtually unchanged for
17 years (until two awful accidents during the 1966 race prompted revisions). The general atmosphere
was enhanced by orderly rows of disused military aircraft, slowly decomposing on the race track
infield.
In 1950, sports car races began running at Sebring, and in 1952 the format was extended to an
international 12 Hour Enduro. Promoted heavily, successfully – and globally - by Alec Ulmann, the
event was soon placed on the FIA calendar, and factory teams the world over began making the
tranquil village, nestled amongst the citrus orchards, a regular stop during each championship season.
As there were virtually no overnight accommodations, other than the Harder Hall hotel, residents
rented their spare bedrooms for the frantic race week. Garage space all around was snapped up and
temporarily crammed with exotic machinery, expert mechanics speaking a profusion of languages, and
celebrities and race drivers often unknown to Americans but idolized in their home countries. The
town’s central square (actually a big circle) became the traditional center for pre-race scrutineering and
avid photo journalism. Little old Sebring had made it onto the Big Map of Must-Go Places!
It was hard to get there though. For fans it was an automobile odyssey. For race teams it meant
caravans of pickup trucks and open trailers. The general aviation airport, tower-less, in the middle of
the track, operated part-time. Practice for cars and open runways for aircraft were scheduled in
interleaved fashion, so the “big boys” could shuttle parts, drivers, celebs, and other necessities in and
out by private plane. But this was before the days of long-haul transporter fleets, and for most teams
the answers were high-probability guesswork … strapping boxes of selected spares onto trailers and
into towed race car seats … and prayer.

MAR/APRIL 2014
To put a crazy twist on an old racing expression – “run whatcha brung” – if you hadn’t “brung” it with
you to Sebring, you probably couldn’t “git” it. UPS and FEDX didn’t exist, of course, and in any case
the nearest real city, with a real airport, was Tampa - 100 miles away on goofy two-lane Florida roads
chock-a-block with snail’s-pace tourists. The trail for, say, a crucial rear-end cog from the factory in
Italy to the paddock at Sebring was long, formidable and staggeringly expensive. At Sebring, a broken
fan belt could produce a major crisis. Running out of Shell heavy-duty diff grease could – and did
once - hand us a devastating 11th-hour DNF.
Sebring, in the Dark Ages, was more than a race. It was an arduous adventure at one of the most
demanding circuits in the racing universe. If you finished the 12 Hours – in any spot – it was an
exhilarating experience, with bragging rights to this very day. And one thing hasn’t changed; the local
oranges and grapefruit are still World Class.

Ayrton Senna at Monza
A wonderful and stunning art piece for a living room or office! Three time Formula One Champion Ayrton Senna
from Brazil at the Monza Grand Prix wearing the number 1 plate. Artist WK Gilbert. Water colors throughout.
This is the artist proof 5 out of 10. Art size is 30 high by 35 inches wide. Cherry wood frame with soft leather border
measures 40 high by 45 inches wide. Museum glass with UV protection. This is on display in my home in Greeley,
Colorado.
Senna is regarded as one of the greatest drivers in the history of Formula One. In 2012, a poll of 217 current and
former Formula One drivers chose Senna as their greatest Formula One driver, in a survey conducted by British
magazine Autosport. He was recognized for his qualifying speed over one lap and from 1989 until 2006 and held the
record for most pole positions. Senna was especially quick in wet conditions, as shown by his performances in the
1984 Monaco Grand Prix, the 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix, and the 1993 European Grand Prix. He also holds the
record for most victories at the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix (6) and is the third most successful driver of all time
in terms of race wins. He was often rated as the best of all.
