More than 2300 years ago, Plato said, "Music is a more potent instrument than any other for education, and music should be taught before anything else." 2 The Compass Church in Naperville, IL 3 Awesome! Do You Know: •From B&O Magazine, July/August, 2000, pages 14-15, Dr. Nancy Utterback of the Communicate Institute of Canton, OH, has found that music study correlates positively with character building in students: "Kids who are involved in orchestra activities stay out of trouble. They realize the effect they have others. They feel good about themselves, which is reflected in their character." 5 Amazing! 7 Do You Know: •From Parade Magazine, June 14, 1998, pages 14-15: "There's an overlap in the brain mechanism --in the neurons used to process music, language, mathematics, and abstract reasoning," says Dr. Mark Tramo, a neuroscientist at Harvard Medical School. "We believe that a handful of neural codes is used by the brain, so exercising the brain through music strengthens other cognitive skills." 8 Max Solo! 10 Do You Know: • From College Board data: “Participation in instrumental music correlates with significantly higher SAT scores in every year that was studied since 1969. In 1991, the national average SAT score was 896, while music students' scores averaged 962.” 11 Incredible! Do You Know: •As Albert Einstein said regarding his Theory of Relativity, "It occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition. My discovery was the result of musical perception." 14 Fabulous! The 3- to 5-year olds who received six months of piano lessons improved significantly in spatial-temporal reasoning compared with kids who received either singing lessons, computer lessons or no extras.
