The Fund supports care, diagnostic education and
research regarding breast health and cancer. This Fund
enables us to support the education of women and men
about breast cancer and promote innovative research to
improve early detection.

The Elizabeth Wende Breast Care Fund was created at
Rochester Area Community Foundation by the physicians
of Elizabeth Wende Breast Care, LLC in 2008.

About EWBC Services
Insurance Information
2D & 3D MAMMOGRAPHY/CAD —Screening and
diagnostic mammography is performed with the latest
technology in full-field digital mammography equipment.
Digital breast tomosynthesis/3D (TOMO) is available
upon request at our Brighton, Greece and Victor facilities.
This is a new technology that clinical studies have shown
to be beneficial for patients considered to be high risk for
breast cancer and patients with dense breast tissue or a
prior history of atypia. All mammograms performed at
EWBC are read by our radiologists along with the use of
CAD (Computer Aided Detection).
Cancer Risk Assessment & Genetic Testing
EWBC has a certified genetic counselor on staff who
performs breast cancer risk assessments and provides
comprehensive cancer genetic counseling services
for our patients. Our counselor is also available to
answer questions from patients concerning cancer risk
assessment and genetic testing.
Ultrasonography — Breast ultrasonography is used
as an adjunct to mammography, usually to distinguish if
a lump or mass is solid tissue or if it is simply a fluid filled
cyst. Ultrasonography allows our physicians to accurately
diagnose lesions in the breast detected on breast exam,
mammogram or MRI. As of January 2013 a NY State
mandate has recommended that additional screening
tests such as screening ultrasound may be helpful
in women with dense breast tissue to detect subtle
abnormalities that could be cancer.
Bone Density Testing (DXA) — Bone density
testing is a simple, painless and accurate method for
evaluating bone mass and osteoporosis. EWBC offers
DXA scanning at all our offices as a convenience for all
patients requiring a bone density exam.
Multimodality Biopsy — Use of core biopsy
enables our physicians to diagnose findings detected on
mammography, ultrasound or MRI. This procedure is
designed to save women from undergoing unnecessary
surgery. It is relatively painless and minimally invasive,
making it a faster and less traumatic alternative to
traditional surgical biopsy. EWBC is proud to be a
pioneer in developing and performing stereotactic and
MRI biopsy and introducing it to our Upstate NY region.
Breast MRI — Breast MRI is a highly sensitive,
noninvasive diagnostic tool that is often used in
conjunction with mammography and ultrasound. It
helps physicians evaluate the extent of a breast cancer,
as well as establish a treatment plan and monitor a
patient’s response to chemotherapy. This advanced
technology is also a valuable screening tool for patients
considered to be at high risk for breast cancer whether
due to strong family history and or genetic risk, personal
history or other risk factors.
Although we proactively screen our patients for
hereditary breast cancer risk at EWBC, our genetic
counselor is available by appointment to meet with
patients at risk for any hereditary cancer syndrome.

Excellus BlueCross BlueShield plans, MVPSM, Aetna®,
Medicare and Medicaid, as well as other insurance plans. We
are also a provider to many NYS Health Partnerships. To verify

Mammograms for
the Uninsured
EWBC and the Cancer Services Program provide
free mammograms for women 40 years of age and
older who do not have insurance coverage for breast
