3D Mammography
For patients who are considered high risk or with
family history of breast cancer, 3D Mammography
or Breast Tomosynthesis is the preferred
method of imaging. 3D Mammography may
be used in conjunction with traditional digital
mammography during your annual screening

Windsong’s Board Certified and Fellowship
trained Radiologists offer the following
guidelines to assist you in your decision making
around breast cancer screening.
1. Seek out Board Certified and Fellowship
trained radiologists in Women’s Imaging and
Board Certified breast sonographers
2. Begin breast screening at the age of 40, sooner
if recommended by your doctor
3. Be prepared for a properly compressed
mammogram – it is the number one tool
essential for the detection of early stage breast
cancer
4. Understand what it means to have dense
breast tissue
Breast Density
Breast density is determined by the radiologist who
reads your mammogram. There are four categories
of mammographic density. Your doctor should be
able to tell you whether you have dense breasts
based on where you fall on the density scale.
Radiologists classify breast density using a 4-level
density scale:
Left to right: Almost entirely fatty, scattered areas of fibroglandular
density, heterogeneously dense, extremely dense.
Why Breast Density is Important
• A woman with dense breast tissue may be at greater risk for developing breast cancer.
• Dense breast tissue makes it more difficult for
doctors to spot cancer on mammograms.
• Dense tissue appears white on mammograms. Lumps also appear white.

What tests are better for women with dense
breasts?
Doctors and scientists agree that early detection is
the best defense against breast cancer. Until now,
2D Digital Mammography was the best screening.
While Digital Mammography is still one of the
most advanced technologies available, it is only
a two dimensional picture of the breast. Since
the breast is composed of pockets of dense tissue
surrounded by fat, when X-Rayed, it creates an
image that looks something like a smoky haze.
