100 Games -‐ Ewan Scott
 Around the Pitches
Ewan Scott from our U17 team will be playing 100th game with Aspendale Stingrays this weekend and the whole club wishes him well for this occasion. Ewan's history with this club goes back to the very earliest days with participation in our first skill programs. Ewan then progressed to the U10’s, who were one the first teams to participate in any form of competition for the Aspendale Stingrays. Photograph by Nino Benci 100 Games -‐ Ewan Scott It was clear back then that Ewan had inbuilt natural soccer ability with great close control. Ewan has played in numerous positions for our team's throughout the years but his ability has served him best as a winger where, on his day, he is capable of leaving defenders tied in knots. There is no doubt about his natural ability along with his keen eye for goal scoring opportunities. We hope Ewan continues playing soccer long into the future, as we believe his best is yet to come as he further develops his game along with his body core strength. The U11 Maroons lost to Glen Eira Giants (0 – 2) in a hard fought encounter but were gallant in defeat. A special mention goes to Liam Pavlov and Ryan Comerford on their great game. The U14 boys, currently second on the ladder, defeated Brighton (3 – 2). Normally we start off slow but this match we had a goal in the first minute of play. After we dominated most of the first half, Brighton were allowed to get into the play and scored before half time to make it 3-‐1. In the second half we m issed some chances and Brighton stepped up to kick a goal. It was a great win for the boys who have come off a draw and a loss in recent weeks. Goals: Cole Ryan, Lachlan Mutimer and Justin Lampert. Best Players: James Macnab, Jasper Smith, Lachlan Mutimer, Cole Ryan and Joshua Bourke. U15 Stingrays, currently fourth on the ladder equal on points with second and third, defeated Endeavour United (2 – 0). The Stingrays dominated play for the day but couldn't convert the many chances created in the first half going in nil all. The game opened up in the second half, mostly because this half of the ground was in a better condition and the Stingrays found the back of the net twice. It could have been a few more, but for the solid goalkeeping by the opposition. Every player m ade a contribution in dominating possession. Goal scorers: Joshua Mravljak and Corey Kovacs Best Players: Jordan Daicos, Mithiran Anandeswaran, Joshua Mravljak and Declan Brightman. U11 Wallabies drew with Caulfield Cobras (2 all). For a change it wasn’t raining however a very heavy Browns Reserve made it very difficult for our boys to get our passing game flowing. It was a pretty much a steady slog during the better part of the first half with both defenses not giving much away. The first half had few chances fall to Luke De Gregorio playing a central role upfront with Adam Bartosy down the left wing supported by Finn McCall on the right with Jeremy Ockerby and Guy Toomer in midfield. Finally the deadlock broke with Caulfield going 1 nil up through an Aspendale own goal and against the run of play. Well, this must have spurred our boys into action as Caulfield’s lead only lasted a matter of minutes before we equalised through a well-‐taken and very composed Jeremy Ockerby header. One -‐ all at half time. The second half was more of what we have b een used to seeing all season, with our boys trying to look for each other and passing into good open spaces for our runners like Max Reindel, Tom Wilcox, Samuel Curtis and Kailan Smith getting into spaces and creating the chances on goal. Our defence stood firm controlled by Declan Ford and supported by the valiant yet injured Jack Mogensen in goal. The passion and tempo of the game seemed to pick up an extra gear as both teams tussled for the lead. The game finally finished as it had started as a bit of an arm wrestle and in the end shared the spoils as Jeremy Ockerby added to his first half goal with Caulfield also adding a second shortly thereafter. Scorer: Jeremy Ockerby 2 Stingrays U17 were beaten by the leagues top team Beaumaris (5 – 2) who are a very organised and drilled team, that said, most of the open play belonged to the Stingrays, the b oys deserved a lot more out of the game. The Beaumaris goals were well taken, but in the end it was the more physical presence of our opponents at corners and set plays that was the defining difference on the score line. Scorers: Jack Gallagher and Nick Anastassiades U8 boys defeated East Brighton Panthers (4 – 0) after a shaky start but thankfully the Panthers could not seem to find the back of the net. Then a breakthrough occurred, with Alex Logan hitting one from the half way line that trickled past the goalkeeper. Soon after it was an own goal and we knew then we had them............... Scorers: Alex Logan, Karl Neubauer and Liam Mulligan-‐Peters U9 boys defeated Hampton JSC (6 -‐ nil). It was a game of firsts. First time we kept the nil, first time one of our players scored a hat trick and the first time we scored with a header. It is great to see the improvement of the team as we dominated the first half. Our attack proved a handful and the midfield and defence were sturdy with Will Wade keeping to nil again in goal! Damiano Muscariello scored a good goal after refusing to give up. The combination of fruit and lollies during the break must have had a magic potion as we blitzed Hampton in the second half. Our running game with passing out wide and back to the middle was textbook. Damiano scored twice more to get a well-‐deserved hat trick, Oliver Delrio scored a running goal and Xavier Supple scored a couple including a great header. Marley Haenga and Campbell McFarlane were picking off the loose balls when Hampton were trying to get out of defence whilst Charlie Stevering and Oliver Hower ensured that Joel McCall had a quiet time in goal. Hampton did get a late chance, but Joel made a great save to ensure we kept our first nil of the season. Scorers: Damiano (3), Xavier (2) and Oliver Delrio An exciting game played by U11 Green going down to North Seaford (4 – 2). Our boys were awesome from a skill and attitude perspective. Well done to Jobe Berends in goals who played injured, Luke Nevill for his ability to cover the ground and Jackson Walley for defending superbly. Congratulations to Matt De Gregorio who scored our two goals. A great second half comeback by the U10 boys was not enough to win the game and they went down (4 – 5) against Cardinia Junior SC. Goals scorers Kane Vella 2, Mark Deacon and Xavier Currie. Dion Lepair set two of these goals up nicely. Angus Lloyd and Trent Taylor were both excellent in goals. The U11 Girls defeated Brighton City (12 – 1) with goals scored by Kayla Welsh 3, Erica Hall 3, Bonnie Carmichael 2, Brigitte Bartosy, Maeve Conry and Lauren Ditchfield. The under 11 girls captained by Emma Callanan, turned quality team play in to a deserved winning score. The girls once again had good focus and kept, for most of the game, good team shape, They were able to capitalise on some fantastic transition of the ball, from back line right through to the forward line. Most notably today the midfield distribution of ball to our wingers was fantastic and when we have the ball out on the wings we are at our most dangerous. Today was no exception with the wing players providing some great passing into the Brighton goal area. Seeing the training drills and skills played out on the field during competitive matches resulted in putting the ball in the back of the net!!!
