Central Park Amphitheater
The Central Park Amphitheater will include a seating area that will be able to accommodate
approximately 3,000 people. The rows of seating will step down towards the center of the
amphitheater with concrete edges, for built-in seating, and grassy areas, for blanket or lawn chair
seating. Retaining walls will be constructed in order to raise the seating area from the existing grade.
An 8-foot arched retaining wall will line the seating area on the street side along Royal Crescent Drive.
This wall will be topped with a 2-foot parapet and a 4-foot wrought iron fence and will include arched
recessed areas on the outside face of the wall for enhanced architectural detail. Enhanced landscaping
will be installed along the outside of the wall. Sloped retaining walls will also line each of the entrances
into the amphitheater to create the raised seating portion. These entrances can control access into the
amphitheater. Two of these entrances include restrooms on either side and are covered by a rooftop
platform that can be used for sound and lighting equipment during venues. The main entrance, which
lines up directly with Central Park Avenue, is also covered with a rooftop platform. In addition, these
entrances, the main entrance and the other two covered entrances, will each connect to plazas that will
include enhanced paving, water features, and public art. The outside area of the amphitheater, along
Royal Crescent Drive, can also be used for vendors to set up during fairs, fesitivals, or amphitheater
events. This area also includes two kiosks and one pavilion. An interactive fountain/splash park of at
least 2,000 square feet in size is also proposed at the southwest corner of Central Park.
The amphitheater stage will be at least 3,000 square feet in size and raised up at least four feet from the
ground. It will include a cover that can be used for lighting and sound equipment. Backstage will
include an enclosed structure of at least 2,500 square feet that can be used for dressing rooms and the
storage of equipment. Vehicular access will also be provided to the backstage building for artists and
event set up.
In addition, the amphitheater will contribute to half of the cost for the construction of a parking
structure.
Chapel
The River Walk Chapel will include three buildings total: 1) main chapel; 2) bridal suite; and 3) grooms
chambers for a total of approximately 8,000 square feet of building. The main chapel will be
approximately 6,000 square feet and will have a second story component located at the rear of the
building. The bridal suite and grooms chamber will each be 1,000 square feet.
The main chapel will include approximately 210 seats. The interior furnishings of the chapel will be very
detailed and ornate and will include tile flooring, stone walls and ceiling with frescas, mosaics, and other
types of art work or paintings, a raised altar, and enhanced lighting. Stained glass windows are also
proposed as well as a tile roof with custom stone exterior walls. Equipment for events will include
sound, lighting, and videography components. The chapel will be built on an elevated pad created by
stone retaining walls and positioned to overlook the 14-foot waterfall within the River Walk channel.
The chapel entry will include a stone walkway with a pedestrian bridge over a water feature. Statues,
landscaping, and enhanced lighting will also be provided to compliment the chapel.
Timing
Depending on the outcome of the general public voting for the approval of the PID, it is anticipated that
construction for the chapel and amphitheater will be started in late 2014 with an approximate date of
completion in October 2015.
