A Note From Our President
SVDA Recognized Shows
It’s hard to express my gratitude to the SVDA Board & Members for your continued hard work and extra
efforts to make both our SVDA Recognized shows a success this year. So many people helped in so
many ways that I can’t even list everyone here. But a special Thank –You to Donna who has been an
incredible Show Chairman and makes everything look like it runs smoothly almost on its own (we know
better). Donna - you have put in so many extra touches to make everyone feel welcome and to make
the show special!
Sandy - you did a unprecedented job of coordinating the ads and sponsorships
and really made a difference in our bottom line. Mike Winchell was instrumental this year in all the
setup, take down and storage. The whole Rombs family comes to set up the rings every year at both
shows!
Every board member as well as myriads of general members contributed to making these 2
shows successful!
Throughout the day – I was very impressed with the dedication and kindness of all our volunteers. We
even have several people volunteering who are not even SVDA members! How awesome is that?
The Lemonade Lady and the Zero’s Subs people told me how much they enjoyed coming and how
appreciative and kind everyone was! I think it says a lot for the quality of our club and how our
members represent themselves. In spite of being “Dressage Queens”, we are a very charming
group!

Helpful tip from a master saddler from England:
A good reason for using a mounting block when mounting.
Constant mounting from the ground can cause the tree to twist as the rider
grasps the pommel and cantle when they mount and pulling up their weight in
that manner can cause damage to the tree over time.

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN!!
Once again we’re asking the VADA membership to take a few moments and
think about those VADA members who have gone out of their way to help
their fellow competitors, their clubs, and the sport of Dressage in general. If
you know someone who embodies the spirit of good sportsmanship, please
take the time to nominate that person for the 2010 Shel Gafford Award for Excellence in
Sportsmanship.
By showcasing and rewarding good sportsmanship, we hope to encourage that quality in
all our members, and in turn make the Dressage experience more enjoyable for
everyone.
The information about the award is on pages 24 & 25 in the 2010 VADA “Purple Book”.
Nominations should be 200 words long (give or take a couple), and must be submitted no
later than October 15, 2010. The slate of nominations will appear in each of the VADA
chapter newsletters in November. Each chapter must decide how they will collect
their chapter’s votes, and then submit their chapter’s total votes for each
nominee by December 15, 2010. Send nominations by email or snail mail (email
is better) to: [email protected] or Louise West, 29400

Congratulations on a Successful Mare Inspection!
SVDA member Robin Jones took her Canadian Warmblood Mare “Aerothena” (Teena) to the ISR/Oldenburg NA inspection Aug 26-27th at
Hilltop Farm in Maryland. Trainer Tristin Hardy Butler accompanied them to ride in the performance under saddle and assist in the free
jumping portion of the testing.
Teena easily made the Main Mare Book earning a 69.9 in her inspection with a 7.5 for breed, mare type. She also did well in the
Performance Testing scoring a 69.5 in the performance evaluation with a 7.5 in jumping and 7.3 in ridability – which was awesome
considering another mare in her under saddle group bucked her rider off right in front of Teena and Tristin, and then went into a second
bucking fit as they passed them at the canter a few minutes later. It was a little extra excitement but Tristin and Teena kept their cool and
stayed safe.
Tristin has been showing Teena in the SVDA shows this summer to prepare her for the riding portion of the testing. They won their
Training 3 and 4 classes with 66% in both at the Happy Valley show in August. All in all, the three make a great team and all the hard work
and preparation paid off! Thank you to everyone who helped in so many ways big and small.

Attention: All SVDA Junior and Young Riders (and “Big Kids” too!)
1. Busch Gardens field trip! October 10th, 2010
Everyone welcome, not just for the 2010 team members! Come and hang out with other
SVDA young riders. Caravan from Bridlewood Estates in Suffolk at 9:00 am or meet up at
Busch Gardens at 10:30 near the Courtesy Booth inside the gates but before the turnstiles.
Come anytime; stay as long as you want. Call or text Tristin through out the day to find out
where people are in the park. Contact Tristin to RSVP and for more details.
This is not an SVDA sponsored event. This is a fun get together and participants attend
under their own cost and risk. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a
responsible adult. Those wishing to attend but do not have a parent or adult family member
who can attend may contact Tristin for other arrangements.
“Big Kids” (members over the age of 21) are welcome to join the fun!
2. Contact Tristin to be included on the SVDA Junior and Young Rider email list to keep
informed about upcoming events in more detail. You do not have to attend the Team
Championships to participate in other youth activities.
3. Contact Tristin with your interest in the 2011 SVDA Region 1 Junior and Young Rider
championship Team information. Everyone 21 and under in the calendar year of 2011 is
eligible.
4. It’s never too early to start fundraising for the 2011 Junior and Young Rider Team
Championships! We will likely be doing a fundraiser this fall – suggestions welcome (Joe
Corbi’s pizza and deserts are always a favorite!)
Ideas, questions and suggestions welcome!

Youth Member Spotlight
Ashley Drum
Member of the 2010 SVDA Youth Championship
Team
Ashley competed at the Region 1 Youth Team Championships
with the SVDA team in 2010 on “Chippy Zip” affectionately known
as “Reggie”. Ashley’s team The SVDA Incredibles were the
Champions for their division! Her team members were Brooke
DeCant and Louise Murray. And not just members of the
Champion Team, Ashley and Reggie earned the highest score in their division!
Ashley has always loved horses and for her 8th birthday she finally got to start taking riding lessons with Tristin
Hardy. For Christmas that year her parents surprised her with a lease on “Wavy” an adorable black Fell Pony. In
2009 Ashley and Wavy had the distinction of being on the cover of Discover Suffolk Magazine which featured
Bridlewood Estates and Elfenridge Dressage.
After her lease with Wavy was finished, the Drums purchased a handsome Haflinger pony named Ziggy. Ashley
had fun on Ziggy and learned a lot, however Ziggy decided he would much rather be a trail horse then an all
around horse, so he now has a happy life giving beach rides in North Carolina. Ashley and her family have been
able to go on beach rides with Ziggy at his new home, and had a blast!
In the spring of 2010, Ashley started riding Reggie, a much loved school horse at Bridlewood Estates, and they
really clicked. At their first show in June they got a first at Intro B with a 66% and they continued their success
with 67-68%’s at the Junior Team Championships in July.
Ashley enjoys all aspects of horses. She has fun at the shows, but also enjoys light trail riding and helping in the
barn with chores and grooming. She is a hard worker and fun to have around with a smile always ready. Ashley’s
mom Kristy grew up with a pony and Ashley’s younger sisters Rachael and Stevie are both looking forward to
more riding in their futures.
Thank you Ashley and the Drum Family for participating in the SVDA and for your help volunteering. We are
happy to have you as active members!
If you have a youth member you would like to see in the spotlight, please contact Tristin Hardy Butler
