NATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES MONITOR President’s Note I guess I couldn’t resist. I’ve signed up for two more years as President of the board of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences—Northwest Chapter! I’m delighted and honored to be doing so. The reason I got involved in NATAS in the first place is the same reason many of you are involved: Our organization is all about ‘Excellence in Television’ and now of course, ‘Excellence on the Web’ as well. The nominations are in. And soon, we’ll see who gets to bring home the ‘hardware.’ It should be an incredible night. This year’s Northwest Emmys will be hosted by your favorite and mine: Pat Cashman! Son, Chris, will be producing the show. I can’t wait to see what Pat and Chris come up with. I know we’ll all be laughing a lot. Last year at this time, I was still reporting at KOMO 4 News. In fact, in my President’s Note in May of 2007, I gave a big thanks to General Manager Ross Davis and SCCTV for providing live streaming of the Emmy show. It was the first time we had ever streamed the Emmys. I wrote then, “I just googled SCCTV, and didn’t realize they were the first community college television station in the country to stream live and ‘fulltime’ on the internet.” Here I am, one year later, and I feel so fortunate to be able to say that I'm the new General Manager at Seattle Community Colleges Television. Ross Davis is enjoying his retirement and thankfully still serving on the board. And speaking of our Board of Governors. They're an amazing group who work tirelessly on programs and events just for you! The next event? The Emmy Awards of course. By now, hopefully, you’ve bought your tickets to the big show! To all the nominees, best of luck. See you June 7th . John Sharify President. NATAS Northwest Chapter In this Emmy Edition: Emmy on the Road Page 2 Happy Hour(s)! NATAS Northwest sponsored the visits by Kim Griffis, Laural Porter, Kurt Austin and Tim Griffis. Kim and Tim Griffis conducted a workshop at brand new Don Anderson Hall on the University of Montana campus in early April. Professionals from Missoula participated in the presentation “Finding Emmy-winning Stories in your own Backyard.” Kim and Tim spoke of the need to work outside your shift to find meaningful stories that don’t happen between 9 and 5. The Griffis team also worked with students in the Radio-Television Department at the Journalism School at UM. They viewed and critiqued segments of a documentary-in- progress and showed students how to get the most out of interviews. They spent time showing how reporter/photographer teams best work together and conducted a mock interview where they showed students what NOT to do. Laural Porter and Kurt Austin of Portland’s KGW-TV cruised to Eugene on April 20th to share their wisdom and advice. The two have won multiple Emmy awards for their work and recently learned they are the winners of a regional Edward R. Murrow award. Laural and Kurt shared what they’ve learned with media professionals and students and say it was a great way to “pay forward” what they’ve gained through experience. Laural and Kurt showed students and professionals the difference teamwork can make on every story. They shared how they work together on everything from story concept to writing and editing. Laural says she’s sure they were in the company of future Emmy winners. My thanks to both teams for taking time from their busy schedules to take the Emmy message to students and professionals in the smaller markets in our region. The Emmy on the Road program is one of many ways NATAS Northwest is reaching out to members and non-members to improve the quality of television journalism in our region. ~ Denise Dowling Page 2 MONITOR HAPPY HOUR(s)!! NATAS Northwest hosted another happy hour at Boka, at Hotel 1000 in Downtown Seattle It was another great opportunity to generate awareness of NATAS Northwest among other folks in the media We hope to hold more Happy Hour events in the months to come! MONITOR Page 3 A Sunset Bowl SNICKERS for JP Patches Help us celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Seattle broadcast of J.P. Patches and honor Chris Wedes with a bronze statue! Patches Pals, with a little help from NATAS, are working to raise money to commission life-sized bronze sculptures of J.P. Patches and Gertrude, played by Chris Wedes and Bob Newman on KIRO TV from 1958 to 1981. The sculpture will be placed in Fremont near the The SEATTLE CHANNEL shot a special episode of the weekly magazine show CityStream during the final hours of Sunset Bowl in April. Co-hosts Chris Cashman and John Keister were on hand as the city said goodbye to yet another local icon. One bright spot in the affair was Chris' purchase during the show of the last SNICKERS bar in the Sunset Bowl vending machine, and subsequent posting of the yummy snack on eBay. Bids pushed the final sale price to $52.03--thanks to exposure from the PI and numerous blogs--with all proceeds donated to the JP Patches statue campaign. Winning bidder was an Auburn man who, like so many others, really loves JP! To see video of the Sunset Bowl episode of CityStream, please visit the SEATTLE CHANNEL website at: www.seattlechannel.org/citystream. "Waiting for the Interurban," a very famous sculpture and land mark. Our goal is to dedicate the statue on June 21st during the Fremont Summer Solstice Festival! The ol’ clock on the wall says it’s time to click on Grandpa Tick Tock and contribute to the JP Patches Statue As of May 1st, we’ve raised more than $168,000!! "If I was going to do broadcast journalism again, be a public person again ...then it had to be something different from what I'd done," Brown told The Associated Press. "You can count on one hand how many gigs there are like this." Anchoring "Wide Angle," a weekly public affairs series with a global focus, offers the chance "to work in an environment where people just think about making good TV and good journalism," Brown said. "By the end (of an episode), you understand the world you live in and how it's connected to you," he said Saturday. Brown, 59, who left CNN in November 2005 during a shake-up that Brown delivers the commencement speech at Arizona State Unigave his time slot to rising star Anderson Cooper, said he was con- versity in May, 2007 tractually barred from working in TV until last June. A lawyer and labor negotiator, Tony was executive director of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists in Seattle, local representative of the Screen Actors Guild, and deputy director of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Washington chapter. He negotiated the first domestic partnership provision accepted by the City of Seattle, represented the Seattle Symphony & Opera Players' Organization, the King County Prosecutors and a host of individual artists, performers and broadcasters. He served as Assistant Dean at Gonzaga University Law School, where he also taught a course in entertainment law. He served as Executive Director of the Dispute Resolution Center of King County, a nonprofit organization providing mediation services to the public. Tony was a faithful servant in the Greek Orthodox church in Portland, Spokane and Seattle. He was active in the Order of American Hellenic Education Progressive Association, serving as District Governor and attending many district and national conventions. He was also active in the state Democratic Party and attended the 1980 National Convention as a Ted Kennedy delegate. He proposed to his wife, Dale, while dancing at President Clinton's inaugural ball. He was an eloquent speaker, drawing a picture with words that enabled his listeners to be totally enveloped by his imagery. Tony was born Sept. 6, 1946 to Mary and the late Nick Hazapis of Wauna and Seaside, Oregon. He graduated from Clatskanie High School and earned degrees from the University of Oregon, where he belonged to TKE fraternity, and Gonzaga University Law School, where he was the President of the Student Bar Association. Tony is survived by his loving wife and soul mate, Dale; his mother, Mary; sister-in-law, Mary; nephew, Nick (Debbie and Alix); niece, Tia; nephew, John (Sereena, Taelor and Eli); aunt, Angie Anast, and cousins, Steve and John Anast. Tony is also survived by many extended family members and other friends. Box 1661, Helena, MT 59624. In 1998 when Robert “Bob” Kelly was inducted into NATAS Northwest’s Silver Circle, he was described as a pioneer— “one that originates or helps open up a new line of thought or activity.” Kelly was a true television pioneer. At the age of 15, his father started KCRA radio in Sacramento, CA where Bob worked as a bill collector. He also wrote radio shows, advertising copy and he even recorded remotes from the Fremont Presbyterian Church and MoMo’s Jazz Club. After a stint in the Army (which he told people ended at 2:4M on May 18, 1953), Bob returned to KCRA radio to work as a salesman, copywriter and programmer. With his father and brother Jon, Bob started up KCRA-TV, which signed on the air on September 3, 1955. In 1956, Kelly took on the role of station manager for the television station and remained in that position until 1968. Recognizing the need for growth in the news department in 1956, Bob decided to take on a position as “news trainee” as he helped build the KCRA-TV news department. He worked in that capacity until his retirement in 1975. But he couldn’t stay away for long — in 1979, Bob and his brother heard about a public TV station for sale in Tacoma, Washington. They flew up to make an offer, which was accepted. The FCC approved the sale in December, 1979 and the station went dark while plans were made to being operation as an independent station. KCPQ-TV signed on the air on November 4, 1980 and joined the start-up FOX network in 1986 as program direction and general manager. He retired a second time in 1995. Kelly died on April 14 after a long illness, at the age of 78.
