Boy this year has really
passed quickly. I felt it was a very
productive year for our Association
and I thoroughly enjoyed working
with all the committees as well as
the board of directors. We have
laid the ground work for what I’m
sure will be a very successful 2014
and I would like to take this time
now to encourage everyone to
become even more involved with
the Association. This is a wonderful
group to of people to work with
and it has been a pleasure serving
as your President in 2013. Best of
luck in the year ahead—I have
high hopes with Anita Morrell
leading the way.

Hello valued Affiliates and fellow REALTORS®,
The opportunity to serve our clients and positively impact our
communities is a huge responsibility that can have giant rewards. BTVAR is
here to assist our members to "successfully attain their highest goals in
an ethical and professional manner". To that end, Hagan, Mike Mumpower
(President Elect) and I have met with VAR and have been working on a 3 year
strategic plan for BTVAR. This plan deals directly and specifically with how
this Association can better serve our membership. This plan will be presented
Anita Morrell BTVAR to the Board of Directors next week. Also, our ROCK STAR committees have
all begun working with a strong Committee Chair in place to direct and lead
2014 President
each committee. Additionally, with the leadership of Past President, Kelly
Graham, and his Physical Offices Committee, a Needs Assessment Survey will be sent to each
member soon because we want everyone in this Association to have a voice. Let your voice be
heard by quickly responding to this survey when you receive it.
Lastly, you all know that our real estate marketplace is rebounding and becoming more
healthy everyday. Locally, commercial developments like The Falls; The Pinnacle; the new
Sessions Hotel in our revitalized, historic downtown Bristol; the new Fairfield Inn on 11W, the August
opening of the $10M Birthplace of Country Music Museum; ongoing community assets like Rhythm
and Roots and Bristol Motor Speedway events are all coming together to create economic
improvements for our region and for our REALTORS®. Embrace these opportunities and be proud
of the part we REALTORS® can and will play in moving our communities forward. Here's to a profitable and happy 2014!

Senate Passes Flood Insurance Bill
On Jan. 30 2014, the United States Senate voted 67-32 to approve
the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act (s. 1926),
sponsored by Senators Menendez (D-NJ) and Isakson (R-GA).
This bipartisan legislation, an NAR member priority, calls for a 4year timeout on rate increases triggered either by a property’s sale or a flood map update for a property with previously grandfathered rates. NAR provided Congress with expert testimony suggesting that many of these increases are
excessive and inaccurate. The bill also creates a flood insurance advocate within the Federal Emergency Management
Act (FEMA) to investigate home owner complaints of multiple different or excessive rate quotes.
The Senate vote send the measure to the House of Representatives, where Reps. Grimm (R-NY) and Waters (D-CA)
have already built and impressive list of 181 co-sponsors in favor of the bill; a total that is 30 votes shy of a House
majority NAR will redouble its efforts there to persuade the House leadership to bring a similar bill up for a floor vote
at the earliest opportunity.
The mission of Abuse Alternatives, Inc. is to provide emergency crisis shelter and an array
of comprehensive services to survivors of domestic violence who reside in the Cities of Bristol
TN/VA, upper Sullivan County, TN and Washington Co, VA. The goal of the agency is to save
lives by providing options for men, women & children who are living in violent or controlling
relationships.
On behalf of the men, women and children served through the emergency crisis shelter
and outreach services at Abuse Alternatives, Inc., I would like to thank the members of the
BTVAR for their donation drive in December. After supplying the Association with an agency
wish list, we were blessed with donations of household cleaners, laundry baskets, mops &
brooms, small appliances and a variety of other household items. These items are used in part
at the emergency shelter and are given to families as they transition from the emergency
shelter to new homes. In addition to the items collected, we would also like to thank those that
made a monetary donation.
In 2014, we anticipate serving 75 women and 50 children in the emergency crisis shelter
alone. Additionally we will provide advocacy, transportation, information & referrals and
hotline services to an additional 1,200 residents of the Cities of Bristol TN & VA, upper Sullivan
County, TN and Washington Co, VA.
We are very thankful and blessed to partner with community organizations such as
BTVAR who support the mission of Abuse Alternatives, Inc. We can stop the violence but we
need everyone's involvement! Again, thank you for your support.
Kathy Johnson
