Infants’ Hat with a Big Boy Look
Three infants’ lined hats in sizes: XS – 18˝ (45.6 cm), S – 18 1/2˝ (47 cm), M – 19˝ (48.2 cm),
L – 19 1/2˝ (49.5 cm) and XL – 20˝ (50.8cm). Hat A has appliqués, B contrast ribbon band and C
chin straps.
SUGGESTED FABRICS:
Cotton Broadcloth and Lightweight Denim
YOU WILL NEED:
• 1/2 yd (45.5 cm) of fabric
• 5/8 yd (57 cm) of fusible interfacing
• 1/4 yd (22.8 cm) of lining
• For hat A, three star appliqués
• For hat B, 2/3 yd (61 cm) of 3/4˝ (2 cm) wide trim
• For hat C, 1/8 yd (11.5 cm) of 5/8˝ (1.5cm) wide Velcro®‚ and two 5/8˝ (1.5 cm) buttons

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
Please read all the instructions before you get started on
your project.
Enlarge all pattern pieces (on page 5) 200%.
Pin pattern pieces to corresponding fabric sections.
Make sure all the pieces are correctly laid before cutting
out the sections. Transfer markings.
2. Stitch center back seam in Crown (1) section.
NOTE: All seam allowances are 1/4” (6mm),
unless otherwise indicated.
SEWING INSTRUCTIONS FOR VIEW A
3. Staystitch upper edge of crown.
4. Pin Top (2) section to upper edge of crown, matching
symbols and clipping crown where necessary; stitch.
Press seam toward crown.

1. Fuse Interfacing to wrong side of each matching
fabric section, following manufacturer’s instructions.
NOTE: Interfacing will not be shown in the following
illustrations.

5. Edgestitch crown along seam.

6. Stitch center back seam in each Brim (3) section.
10. Edgestitch lower edge of crown.
11. Prepare lining in the same manner as fabric, following
steps 1, 2 and 3.
7. With right sides together, pin brim sections together,
matching seams. Stitch along outer edge.
12. Turn in seam allowance on lower edge of crown lining,
press.
8. Turn right side out; press. Baste raw edges together.
Staystitch inner edge of brim. Edgestitch outer edge of
brim.
13. With wrong sides together, place crown lining inside
hat, matching centers. Slipstitch pressed edge over seam.
9. Pin brim to crown, matching center back seams and
clipping brim where necessary. Stitch. Press seam toward
crown, turning brim down.
14. Arrange appliqués over one side of crown, as desired.
Fuse in place, following manufacturer’s instructions.

SEWING INSTRUCTIONS FOR VIEW B
Follow instructions for View A, steps 1-13.
14. For hat band, place ribbon around crown, lapping
ends 1/2˝ (1.3cm) on one side, as shown. Sew ends
together.
9-b. Turn right side out, press.
9-c. Pin chin straps to sides of crown over brim, as shown. Baste.
Press seam toward crown, turning brim and straps down.
Follow instructions for View A, steps 10-13
15. Cut one section from remainder of ribbon, 1˝ (2.5cm)
long. Center ribbon over ends of hat band turning under
ends; sew in place.
SEWING INSTRUCTIONS FOR VIEW C
Follow instructions for View A, steps 1-8.
14. Cut one piece of Velcro® 2˝ (5cm) long. Trim Velcro®‚ to
1/2˝ (1.3cm). On outside, pin stiff section of Velcro®‚ to one chin
strap, as shown. Stitch in place.
15. On inside, pin soft section of Velcro®‚ to remaining chin
strap, as shown. Stitch in place.
9. Pin brim to crown, matching center back seams and
clipping brim where necessary; baste.
16. Turn sides of brim up, matching button markings on crown.
Sew buttons at markings.
9-a. With right sides together, fold Chin Strap (4) piece
along foldline. Stitch, leaving edge open.
