Paul Horner Joins the Outrigger `Ohana Bill Rees Promoted
February 2, 2008
Paul Horner
Joins the Outrigger ‘Ohana
By Kimberly Agas
I join the Human Resources department in
welcoming Paul Horner to Outrigger Hotels &
Resorts as General Manager of the Keauhou Beach
Resort (KBR), effective February 11. Paul steps
into the position previously held by Gregg Enright,
who transferred to Kaua‘i late last year as Regional
Director of Condominium Operations-Kauai and
General Manager of the Outrigger Waipouli Beach
Resort & Spa.
In his new position, Paul will be responsible for
the day-to-day management of the KBR and its staff,
Paul Horner
as well as planning, organizing, and directing all hotel
services, ensuring a balance between customer satisfaction, effective business
management, and financial viability for the property.

Bill Rees Promoted
By Jim Hill
It is my pleasure to join Human Resources in
congratulating Bill Rees on his promotion to General
Manager of the Outrigger Maui Eldorado.
Bill’s career with Outrigger Enterprises Group
began in 1997 at Outrigger’s Worldwide Contact
Center in Denver. After a few years of working there,
Bill decided he wanted a new challenge and was
named Front Office Manager for the Outrigger Maui
Eldorado. Bill worked diligently to hone his property
management expertise and was promoted to Assistant
Resort Manager for the Outrigger Royal Kahana.
Bill Rees
Bill is always ready for a new challenge, and he
is looking forward to his new responsibilities at the
Outrigger Maui Eldorado. Having previously worked at the property, he is a
familiar face to many owners and ‘ohana there.
Congratulations, Bill, on your new position as General Manager and the
best of luck!
Honoring
My Sisters
One of the gratifying things we
do in Saturday Briefing is to report the
many fun things that are going on in
our company. We note celebrations,
community activities, additions to families,
promotions, retirements, and awards
and honors involving members of our
‘ohana. In that context and tradition, I am
especially pleased to report that my sisters,
Jean Rolles and Pat Kelley, have both been
honored recently for the work they do in
the communities where they live.
Jean’s recognition by the Pacific and
Asian Affairs Council is described in a
separate article beginning on page five.
Pat, who is retired and lives in
Oregon, was recently honored by the
Oregon Episcopal School (OES) for her
dedicated work on behalf of its girls’
school, St. Helen’s Hall.
St. Helen’s Hall (SHH) was established
near the center of Portland, Oregon, in
1869 by the Rt. Rev. Benjamin Wistar
Morris, the Bishop of Oregon for the
Episcopal Church. As the city grew over
the century that followed, the campus had
to be moved several times. It has been at its
current location in Portland’s suburbs since
1964, where it shared the campus with
Bishop Dagwell Hall, a newly-formed boys’
school. Eventually the two schools merged
in Oregon Episcopal School.
Pat attended St. Helen’s Hall as a
boarding student at its previous campus
during her junior and senior years of high

Paul Horner Joins the Outrigger ‘Ohana
Continued from page 1
We’re very excited to have Paul on board at the
KBR. He brings an extensive background in hospitality
management at the highest level. He also has an innate
knowledge, respect, and appreciation of Hawaii and
our island culture, having grown up in the islands and
graduating from Kamehameha School.
Paul’s background includes twelve years with Castle
& Cooke Resorts in Hawaii. There he gained front-line
knowledge in the implementation of stringent standards for
first-class hospitality, while working as General Manager of
the luxurious Manele Bay Hotel on the island of Hawaii and
as Hotel Manager of the award-winning Lodge at Koele on
the island of Lanai.
While under his leadership, the Manele Bay was rated #1
on Condé Nast Traveler’s “2002 Gold List of The Best Places
in the World to Stay,” #2 on Condé Nast Traveler’s “Top 100
Golf Resorts,” and #18 on Travel & Leisure’s “The World’s
Best Awards.” The resort also was ranked #5 of all Pacific
Rim resorts in Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards
Poll, the highest honors in the travel industry (November
2003). During his time at The Lodge at Koele, the resort
was voted #1 for outstanding service by the readers of Travel
and Leisure (2001), was rated #1 overall in Hawaii in Condé
Nast Traveler’s “2000 Gold List,” and was the highest scoring
resort in the U.S. for two consecutive years.
Paul is joining us from his most recent position as
General Manager of The Carneros Inn, a PlumpJack
Resort located among the vineyards of California, with 86
individual cottages, 24 private home sites, and a private
residence club consisting of 17 units. Paul has spent the last
two-and-a-half years guiding the property through a $50
million dollar expansion. Those upgrades, coupled with
the property’s top-notch service standards, resulted in the
property being rated the #11 Resort in the United States by
Condé Nast Traveler in their 2007 Readers’ Poll, while their
Spa was rated #16 in the United States.
Paul’s expertise in renovations, his dedication to first-class
service, and his knowledge of the islands will prove invaluable
to Outrigger and the Keauhou Beach Resort, as the hotel
moves forward with the completion of its room renovations
and other future property enhancements that are being
considered. However, Paul’s first priority is to get to know the
employees and the property from the inside out.
Jean Rolles Honored by the
Pacific and Asian Affairs Council
By Dr. Richard Kelley
On Thursday, January 24, the Pacific
and Asian Affairs Council (PAAC) and
distinguished guests, including Governor Linda
Lingle, gathered at The Kahala Hotel & Resort
to present the organization’s prestigious Paul
S. Bachman Memorial Award. The award is
conferred on a citizen and/or organization of
Hawaii for distinguished contributions to the
improvement of relations between the United
States and its neighbors in Asia and the Pacific.
Two awards were presented that evening
– one to the Aloha Medical Mission, a volunteer
organization that provides free health care to
underserved people overseas and in Hawaii, and the
other award to my sister, Jean Rolles, Outrigger’s
Vice President of Community Relations.
Jean has been a long-time member and
active supporter of PAAC, joining its Board
of Governors in 1990 and currently serving
as the organization’s Vice President. Over
the years, she has taken a special interest in
the organization’s Academic WorldQuest

competition. From 2003 to 2006, she sponsored Hawaii’s
winning WorldQuest team, making it possible for them
to participate in the national WorldQuest competition in
Washington, D.C.
During the program, emcee Roland Lagareta said, “Jean
Rolles has really helped to build this program, which inspires
students to learn more about the world. Last November, students
from every public school district in the State of Hawaii and seven
private schools competed to represent Hawaii at the nationals.”
Jean has also been a staunch supporter of PAAC’s crosscultural exchange program, which provides opportunities for
Hawaii high school students to visit countries throughout Asia
and the Pacific, develop a global perspective, and foster an
appreciation and respect for the diversity of the world’s cultures.
Also speaking at the dinner that evening, PAAC
Executive Director Jill Takasaki Canfield commented on
the importance of students being exposed to our global
community. “In our increasingly interconnected world
where one in six U.S. jobs is tied to international trade,
and with most U.S. corporations expecting most of their
growth in overseas markets, the demand for a workforce with
international competence will only increase. They (students)
must be prepared and globally competent, no matter what
field or line of work they choose.”
Since 2004, Jean has personally awarded high school
travel scholarships to China, France, and Japan, allowing
young people from Hawaii to experience foreign cultures and
global education outreach programs.

grade class at Ka‘iulani

Page Presenting the award to Jean that evening was
Governor Linda Lingle, who spoke of Jean as a leader
in our community who recognizes the importance of
providing young people with opportunities to have
international experiences. She called Jean a role model for
all Hawaii residents.
As it turned out, Jean was presented with another
special gift that night – from a guest of Outrigger at the
event, Debbie Engle, a fourth grade teacher at Ka‘iulani
Elementary school in Kalihi. Debbie used the opportunity
to provide a civics lesson for her students that would help
create awareness of Hawaii’s role in the Asia-Pacific region
and increase their understanding of world affairs. Her class
made two posters – one congratulating Jean on her award
and one that Debbie presented to the Governor.
When Jean took the podium that evening, she was
humble in her acceptance of the award and used her
time at the microphone not only to thank PAAC for
the honor, but to encourage everyone in the audience
to become more involved in developing a better
understanding of world affairs and to cultivate an
appreciation of the importance of our own choices in
shaping the future of the world. These are words we take
to heart at Outrigger, as we expand our horizons beyond
Hawaii into the Asia-Pacific region.
Congratulations, Jean. The entire Outrigger ‘ohana is
proud of your accomplishments and your commitment to
improving our community and the world we live in.

“I was talking to

the other day,
and it came
to me in a
panicked flash
that despite my
abundant good
thoughts, I had
never actually
put fingers
to keyboard
to thank you
[Nancy Daniels]
profusely for
Nancy Daniels
doing what you
did to make our honeymoon at the Outrigger
Waipouli so fantastic and memorable. I have
been recommending the place to anyone who’ll
listen since we got back; I travel a lot and am
VERY picky, and I must confess it takes an
awful lot for me to not be even a teeny bit
disappointed with a hotel room when I finally
arrive. This was no hotel room – this was a total
escape, a slice of paradise, and I felt like a movie
star. I was literally jumping up and down and
scampering through all the adjoining doors in
the maze of the suite. The welcome basket was
a beautiful touch, and I don’t mind telling you,
my husband and I gained a good five pounds
during the six days we were there, thanks
in a very large part to our unfortunate new
addiction to macadamia nuts. As these things
always seem to go, I hit the ground running
when I got back to work, and my ‘must send’
e-mails sadly fell out of my screen view. But I
am going through now and making good on
all of them, and you are the first on the list.
If you ever need any input for a testimonial
campaign, by the way, then we are your couple.
We sent an e-mail to the customer service head
at the resort praising the fact that while it was
still under construction, there was in no way a
sense of chaos. It really was the most incredible
honeymoon, and we’ll never forget our time
there. We miss it still, and will be back, maybe
for our 5th wedding anniversary!”

school and graduated in 1955. Since then, Pat has done any number of
things, including being a mother, pilot, quilter, travel agent, genealogist, and
wedding planner. She has also battled life-threatening health issues. She is a
25-year cancer survivor and has undergone two open-heart surgeries.
Pat has not forgotten the influence that St. Helen’s Hall has had
on her life, and over the years, she has been an important link between
the school and the alumnae who graduated in the 1950s. She has
spent countless hours tracking down alumnae who had lost touch with
the school, and she hosted teas and other gatherings for women who
attended the Hall. She also serves on the OES Board of Trustees and is
an ambassador for the Annual Fund as the SHH Alumnae Chair, said
the school in its newsletter, The Connection. Accordingly, Pat was named
a Benjamin Wistar Morris Distinguished Alumna. Fewer than 10 other
alumnae hold this prestigious title.
Estelle Louise Kelley, mother of Jean and Pat and co-founder of the
Outrigger Enterprises Group, was an exceptionally strong, active lady
of many talents. She accomplished many things in a male-dominated
world in an era when few women were in the workforce or the world of
business. At that time, society typically encouraged young girls to limit
their ambitions and focus on being homemakers or, if they were to pursue
a career, to become teachers, nurses, or secretaries.
It is not surprising that Estelle’s daughters have both been accomplished,
active businesswomen energetically involved in a number of endeavors and
generously giving their time and considerable talents to fine community
organizations. These apples did not fall very far from the tree.
Congratulations, Jean and Pat. Your older brother is very proud of
you both.

Page Outrigger’s Alaka‘i Prepare for
Our Next Voyage of Ke ‘Ano Wa‘a
By Ka‘ipo Ho
On Wednesday, January 23, Outrigger’s newly-formed
team of Alaka‘i, or Ke ‘Ano Wa‘a leaders, met for the first
time to brainstorm the re-launch and celebration of Ke ‘Ano
Wa‘a, The Outrigger Way. This gathering marked the start of
a new Ke ‘Ano Wa‘a vision and journey – Ke ‘Ano Wa‘a, A
Voyage of Discovery, Renewal and Inspiration.
Ke ‘Ano Wa‘a really is a celebration of our company
values. And linked to our values are the interesting histories,
cultures, and stories of our places, the unique hospitality
traditions of our diverse destinations, and the compassion of
our Outrigger hosts Pacific-wide to care for our guests and
each other.
In their role, Alaka‘i will work closely with their
management teams to implement Ke ‘Ano Wa‘a within their
hotels and departments.
In our first meeting, the Alaka‘i team brainstormed some
very creative suggestions for our new voyage. To give you an idea
of how times have changed since our 1994 launch of Ke ‘Ano
Wa‘a, the Internet and short video productions were popular
suggestions for bringing our larger Outrigger family together.
I still remember, and have a bunch in storage, the nostalgic
black-and-white printed
storyboards from our first Ke
‘Ano Wa‘a implementation.
One of the things that
withstood the change of time,
as our company has evolved
is the focus on Outrigger
as a family. Nearly every
suggestion from our Alaka‘i
emphasized bridging the
distances that separate us,
whether it be an ocean or
even a couple of blocks down
the road.
Our Alaka‘i team is 40-plus members strong,
including 36 Alaka‘i from Hawai‘i, and representation
from Guam, Fiji, Australia, and Denver.
As the weeks progress, you will hear more about our
exciting Ke ‘Ano Wa‘a, A Voyage of Discovery, Renewal
and Inspiration. So prepare yourselves for a thrilling and
experience-filled voyage!
