would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Welcome to the “Heart of the Kawarthas”! I am pleased that
ITownship
of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield and thank you for the municipality that I represent includes many miles of the
your interest in our community. Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield is
a popular four-season destination bordered almost entirely by
lakes, and is situated along the Trent Severn Waterway system
in the heart of the Kawarthas. The Township is a wonderful
place to visit, live, work and raise a family. While in SmithEnnismore-Lakefield I am sure you will find the hospitality
of our residents and businesses to be warm and pleasant.
Our municipality has a lot to offer from our beautiful lakes,
parks and recreational facilities, heritage and cultural sites and
events, to shopping, restaurants, festivals, entertainment and
accommodation. Thousands of tourists visit us each year to
enjoy fishing, camping, snowmobiling, cross country skiing,
boating, shopping, golfing, art galleries, nature trails, and much,
much more...there is truly something for everyone! I trust you
will enjoy your visit to our community, and I encourage you
to explore all we have to offer. For more information visit our
website at www.smithennismorelakefield.on.ca or contact our
Economic Development Coordinator at (705) 292-9507. Best
wishes for an enjoyable vacation!
famous Trent Severn Waterway System. This chain of lakes
divides our municipality from Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield to
the south, and the City of Kawartha Lakes to the west.
Throughout these many miles of shoreline, there are nearly 100
businesses and tourist establishments that hold membership in
the Buckhorn and District Tourist Association. Some of these
of course, are located in our neighbouring townships but when
it comes to promoting this area, boundaries mean little.
Buckhorn and district has everything you could possibly need
to make a short or long stay with us a “vacation to remember”.
The warm hospitality and good service you will receive will
make you want to come back year after year.
As Reeve, I am proud to represent a large part of the area
that the BDTA covers. On behalf of our Council, I would like to
extend a very warm welcome to those of you who are returning
to our area, and those of you who are joining us for the very
first time. We are certain that this will not be your last visit!
Sincerely,

Cover Artist “Isabelle Blewett”
“Quiet Reflection”
We are thrilled to introduce, as our cover on the 2004 publication “Quiet Reflection”
- an original work in watercolour by
Isabelle Blewett. When approached by our committee about this commission, Mrs. Blewett was pleased to promote the area
in which she was born and still lives.
Situated on Upper Chemong Lake, The Boathouse Gallery on County Road #23, 3 km south of Buckhorn houses the artists’
original works in watercolour and acrylic. The 50-year old boathouse is surrounded by beautiful perennial gardens – wander
and relax in this peaceful setting.
Isabelle studied under Edwin Mathews, the founder of the annual Buckhorn Wildlife Art Festival at Sir Sandford Fleming College
and took many workshops at Gallery on the Lake and Buckhorn School of Fine Arts. Winner of the Ron Hine Art Education
award, her paintings can be seen across Canada and the United States as well as Great Britain.
When visiting this unique gallery, be sure to stand on the lake side of the boathouse and look to the right. This is the site used
to paint our cover.
The Gallery is open from June to October (Thanksgiving). Hours are 11:00 to 5:00 every day. Watch for the sandwich board
at the entrance to the gallery – if the board is at the road, the Gallery is open. Phone 657-3669 for further information.
The BDTA is proud to welcome as our corporate sponsor...

Quilting at the Lakes
Each year, the top entries are grouped into a traveling collection,
which this year will make a rare venture to Canada for our
show. These two international shows are being brought to
our community due to the generosity of Daniel St. Jean from
Kawartha Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge in Peterborough.
The Buckhorn Area Quilters’ Guild is pleased to host a one-ofa-kind quilt show from July 9th to 11th, 2004 at the Buckhorn
Community Centre called “Quilting at the Lakes”. Our theme
of “Fat Quarter Fantasy” will be reflected in works by our many
local quilters, vintage and international quilts, plus members and
children’s quilts. Featured quilt artists, including our very own
guild member, celebrated Anishaabe Quilter, Alice Olsen Williams,
will complement a large merchant’s mall and member’s boutique
along with several full and half day workshops/seminars by
Louise Girard, Angela Krotowski, Denise McKenna and Lynn
Dupont.
Fifteen local ladies who wanted to share the experience of
quilting founded the Buckhorn Area Quilters’ Guild in 1989. At
our monthly meetings, our sixty members work on special guild
projects or personal quilts in the company of others. If you are
just starting or are an experienced quilter, come and be a part of
this growing art form.
The Guild is thrilled to host the internationally acclaimed Trunk
Show “Quilting with Manhole Covers Collection III”. This is the
first and only Canadian location to receive this unique collection
by American quilter, Shirley MacGregor as part if its world tour.
Shirley’s inspiration came when jogging through the streets of
Zushi, Japan where she noticed that the 100 pound iron discs
which covered their manholes were graced with designs of
mountains, flowers, fish, birds and more. In each quilt you will
find wonderful designs, inspiration and a unique interpretation.
Manhole Covers is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to glean
insight into the world of fellow international quilters who
experience a culture different than our own.
For further information about the guild or show, contact Jackie
Scott (705) 657-2150 / Pam Dickey (705) 657-1926 or visit our
web site at www.nexicom.net/~bait1/quilt/baqg1.htm
Pam Dickey, Show Convener
Show attendees will also view a selection of Quilts from the 16th
International “2003 Hoffman Challenge Collection” competition.

Let’s Go Fishing!
MUSKELLUNGE (Esox masquinongy)
BLACK CRAPPIE They inhabit clear,
weedy lakes and slow rivers, 7-8 dorsel fin spines,
6 or 7 anal fin spines, irregular mosaic of
distinct black blotches.
The Buckhorn area is famous for
muskellunge fishing. Also called lunge or
muskie, this pike-like fish has vertical
bars or spots on its side. Average from 12 to 30 lbs., they are common catches for
anglers with know-how. Use large lures, giant minnows and rapalas. Troll adjacent to
weed beds, and fast water. Best in the latter part of September and October. In fall cast
and retrieve quickly over the weed beds and along shore lines. Be prepared for a fight to
the finish. Size limit - 36 inches.
BLUEGILL They inhabit shallow, weedy areas of lakes,
ponds, and rivers. Bluegills can be readily caught on
worms or small spinners, and provide exciting fly-fishing
using poppers, bugs, or flies. Bluegills grow larger than
pumpkinseeds, up to 0.5 kg (1 lb) and average 0.18 kg
(0.4 lb). They are abundant in the Buckhorn area.
LARGEMOUTH BASS Dark irregular bars from
head to tail. The upper jaw extends beyond
the back of the eye. Deep notch between
dorsal fins. They are more often caught in
weed beds which provide natural shelter.
Abundant throughout the Buckhorn area.
PUMPKINSEED Pumpkinseed are abundant in
all the Kawarthas. They are caught still fishing
off weed beds using worms, but can also be taken on
fly rods using small poppers. Despite their small size,
averaging 1 kg (1/4 lb), pumpkinseeds are good eating and
provide many happy hours of angling for young and old alike.
SMALLMOUTH BASS Member of the sunfish
family. Dark vertical bars on sides. The jaw does
not extend beyond the back of the eye. They are
found along rocky shoals by still fishing with
frogs, minnows and crayfish. Abundant throughout the Buckhorn area.
CARP Carp are now found throughout southern Ontario and are
abundant in the Kawartha Lakes. They typically
inhabit shallow waters of lakes and lower reaches of
large rivers, usually associated with aquatic
vegetation. Carp are bottom feeders and can be
caught using doughballs, kernel corn, worms, or various other concoctions. They can
be formidable opponents because of their large size ranging up to 13.6 kg (30 lb).
Carp are a popular food item with some people, particularly when smoked.
PERCH 6 to 8 dark, vertical bands on sides,
alternating with light yellow to yellow-green.
Perch are found in clear waters with some
vegetation throughout Ontario; often school.
2003 BDTA Big Fish Contest Winners
PICKEREL/WALLEYE Member of the perch family-
olive green sides and back. Whitish tip on lower
portion of tail. Modest size and excellent eating,
they are abundant throughout the Buckhorn area.

MARRICK’S LANDING
Burleigh Falls, Ontario 1-800-342-1495 www.marrickslanding.com
The Kawartha Lakes region contains one of the
finest warm water fisheries in the province. Through
community lake stewardship, the KFA works in
partnership with government and other interest
groups to ensure the health of the environment for
future generations.
In the summer of 2003 the KFA continued working
on Buckhorn in regards to three programs in particular.
1. Bass Mortality Study - Bass were weighed and fish scales and
dorsal spines were taken prior to the fish being released for aging
purposes at the September Emerald Isle event. We will have a report
in the spring concerning the mortality of bass from fishing tournament
events (anticipated to be low) as well as a summary of bass in the
Trilakes (Pigeon, Buckhorn, Chemong). Most bass at these events
over 40 cm are 6+ years old. Bass 44 - 48 cm fall in the 10 to 14 year
old category and one fish was 17 years old at 48.5 m. Other fish were
bigger at over 50 cm in fork length but were 14-15 years old.
2. Panfish Maturity and Mortality Study – several collection points
were continued this year for panfish on Buckhorn, looking for small fish
to determine when they mature. The thought is that if they are being
over harvested their instinct is to mature earlier in life and therefore you
end up with the same number of bodies in the lake, they are all just
smaller fish.
3. Minnow or Forage Base work - One of our ideas as to the declining
walleye population is the lack of minnows in our system or forage base
for them. With the new species in the lakes and with zebra mussels,
their preferred habitat and forage base is dwindling. Most MNR netting
programs do not deal with small fish so we have been attempting
to gather this information through minnow traps and Nordic Netting
around the lake. Golden shiner, blunt nose minnow, brown bullheads,
crappie, bass, perch rock bass all showed up in the Nordic Netting
(very small squares in the net to capture small fish). The summer data
along with the below mentioned electro fishing work is currently being
reviewed
Walleye spawning bed creation is planned for the first week of February
(pending ice conditions) just around the corner from Scotsman’s
Point.
Overall the lake is healthy, bass and muskie populations continue to
grow, walleye are taking the brunt of overfishing in a large, competing
environment which we are trying to address on a Kawartha wide
issue.
A healthy lake means a health community and the KFA volunteers spend
many hours locally to have a positive impact for our lakes.
We are always seeking individuals that wish to help in their local
area. Whether you can donate a few hours to help make panfish
funnel traps, participate in water sampling or monitoring walleye
spawning in the spring….we can always use help. The KFA web site,
http://www.scugog-net.com/kfa, contains a wealth of information or
you can reach the KFA directly at 705-340-5551 or through e-mail
