PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I’ve had it…. I can’t take it….I’m
yelling “Uncle” and Old Man Winter is
quite oblivious… I think even you
snowmobilers and ice fishers must
have had enough! But enough of
that. Spring and summer are
imminent (I hope) and so is our
busiest time in the Kawarthas.
Heather Sadler,
Board President
It’s official. I am your President for
another year! I must extend my
congratulations to Kris Keller (RBC),
who was elected as Vice-President for
her second year and to our new
Secretary-Treasurer John Penny (J.C.
Penny Account Services). I am also
thrilled to welcome our new Board
Directors and extend my heartfelt
Some of you may think that in these
times of social media, face-to-face
contact is a thing of the past, or a
luxury that we cannot afford to make
time for. I have to disagree. Maybe it
is because I am not as young as I
used to be, but it seems to me that
the pleasure I get from meeting a
friend or colleague on the street is
much more meaningful than the
barrage of electronic messages that
hits me at every turn. Don’t get me
wrong. I know there is a place, an
important one, for social media, but
the real connections in my life involve
those folks that I can put a face and
a name to. They are the ones I think
“We believe in our community and want to
see it grow and prosper”
thanks to returning Directors as well.
The list of your Directors is included
in this Newsletter – so have a look.
Your Board works hard for you and
gives up some of their very scarce
free time to work on your behalf,
especially when you consider that
these folks are also busy running
their own businesses. Why? Because
we believe in our community and
want to see it grow and prosper. We
believe in our more than 350
Chamber members and we want to
help you succeed… And, we want to
draw people in from ‘away’ to enjoy
the many assets and amenities we
have here in the East Kawarthas,
whether they come from just down
the road, or from afar.
of when I need something done,
when I think about making a
purchase, or when I need some good
advice. I have made many wonderful
connections through networking with
fellow Chamber members at events
like the Breakfast Club, Business
After Hours and the Golf
Tournament, to name a few. There is
richness in our interpersonal
connections and in seeing the smile
on the face of a friend, in real life.
Next time you see an Invitation to a
Chamber Event pop up on your EBlast – press the icon that says “I Will
Attend” and get ready for some good
old-fashioned networking. You’ll be
really glad you did.

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS AT CHEMONG
LODGE
On Tuesday, March 4th, a quick
change of venue was made to
welcome Chamber members at
Chemong Lodge for our March
Business After Hours.
A big thank you to Doug Northey of
Chemong Lodge for hosting this
event, just as he was getting ready
for a major renovation to the bar
area. Doug provided attendees some
very interesting history about the
Lodge and how it has become the
beautiful restaurant and lodge it is
today. We think we even had some
spirits of our own there that night as
he was sharing the stories.
part of Lead the Way
Group of Clinics
Thank you to Cottage Resort.com
and Nightingale Nursing Registry
for donating door prizes for the
evening, and congratulations to all
those who went home with a little gift
from the donors and the Chamber.
Thank you also to our Networking
Event Sponsors for 2014-15,
Chemong Physiotherapy and
Lakefield Physiotherapy and Foot
Health Clinic, part of Lead the
Way Group of Clinics.
Angie
It was a very relaxed, open
atmosphere, with no formal agenda
for the evening. Networking between
Chamber members, both new and
seasoned, and non-Chamber
members alike took place and some
great appetizers were enjoyed by all.
Be sure to drop by Chemong Lodge
to check out the new bar area as we
know Doug had ambitious plans for
renovations the following weekend.

DON’T RELY ON GROUP LIFE INSURANCE
FOR ALL YOUR LIFE INSURANCE NEEDS
If there's one thing I'm passionate
about it's Life Insurance. One of the
reasons for this is because four to
five times per year on average I have
the duty of delivering life claim
cheques to the beneficiaries of
recently deceased employees of the
more than 400 firms that I provide
group benefit plans to.
This may sound like a rather ominous
job, but it's actually quite gratifying
to be able to be of some help at such
a sorrowful time. I've been doing this
for more than 25 years and as
someone said to me many years ago,
I'm the only one who comes to the
event with money in hand, whereas
all the other people involved are
looking to get paid for their services.
Besides the passing of the insured
person, the thing I find most
distressing is the fact that most of
the time the deceased has little or no
other life insurance in place and has
not made sufficient provisions to
enable their family to continue at
Most benefit plans today provide a
minimum amount of life insurance
coverage for the employees, which
could be $25,000 to $30,000 or in
some cases an amount equal to one
year's income. In today's world that's
not a lot of money. And when you
consider that the cost for final
expenses is $12,000 to $15,000 it
won't leave spouses and children with
much money to weather the storm.
Calculating your life insurance
requirements involves comparing
your debts to your assets,
considering your responsibilities and
creating a financial goal. A Life
Insurance Broker/Agent will help you
make the calculations at no cost. As
there are between 40 - 50 leading life
insurance companies in Ontario, all
with different premium rates, I
recommend contacting two to three
Life Insurance Brokers for quotes and
advice.
If you have a spouse, make sure that
you're both involved and on the same
Do something, do anything and do what you can afford.
their present life-style. Some families
are left down right destitute, because
the deceased person was the main
income earner. It's not uncommon
for surviving family members to have
to sell their homes and even file for
personal bankruptcy. What a horrid
position to be left in.
This shortfall of life insurance and the
procrastination to buy it exists among
people from all walks of life and all
levels of income, in spite of the fact
that death is the most certain thing
