4. SUWANEE STEAM SPECIAL-THE 1218 IN FLORIDA
The most powerful operating steam locomotive in the world travels to Florida. This part
of the country never saw an articulated steamer, until the North Florida Chapter of the
National Railroad Historical Society (NRHS) brought her to Florida. Run by the Norfolk
Southern, and sponsored by the NRHS, this incredible trip from the cab, Trackside
and from the train delivers all that other DVDs have missed! Awesome pacing shots
with a gyroscopic lens, run-bys which will send chills up your spine, and sound that will
blow you out of your listening seat! Don’t miss out on the most entertaining and fastest
paced DVD on 1218 yet! 1218 was retired in 1959 and sat next to Union Carbide in
Charleston, West Virginia until 1964. Towed to a variety of museums for static display,
she remained silent for 21 years. In 1985 Robert B. Claytor, then Chairman of Norfolk
Southern helped bring her back to life. The loco underwent a two year overhaul, and in
the Spring of 1987, railroad man Robert Claytor was at the throttle as the 1218 began
her new life in excursion service for the Steam Division of the Norfolk Southern.

5. NO. 4501-THREE DECADES OF EXCURSIONS
Number 4501 was the first of 177 Mikados on the Southern Railway when she arrived
from Baldwin in 1911. She is now the sole survivor in her class. After working for the
SR, the rugged 2-8-2 put more years on the Kentucky & Tennessee Railroad--until she
was purchased in early 1964 by Chattanooga’s fledgling Tennessee Valley Railroad
Museum. When the Southern Railway’s legendary steam excursion program notched out
its throttle two years later, bright green No. 4501 headed up some of its first trains. Early
SR steam trains were the ultimate in simplicity--with No. 4501 pulling a dozen open window coaches. No. 4501 has outlasted most of the other locomotives used in the
Southern’s, and later, Norfolk Southern’s 28 year steam excursion program. While her
peers are now cold and back in museums. No. 4501 continues to proudly highball out of
Chattanooga. Join us for vintage action of No. 4501 pulling excursion trains through the
heart of the south, as well as from Pittsburgh to Washington to Richmond over two
decades ago! We’ll also follow a 1973 excursion of 4501 out of Chicago on the Rock
island to southern Illinois. Our video then fast forwards to the present. No. 4501 is back
on the track again, thundering over the former Central of Georgia main line. 88 Minutes

SUBURBAN RAIL ACTION IN THE 1970’S
THE FILMS OF ROGER M. KOENIG VOL. 2
DVD # 20130dvd $29.95
FROM 8MM AND SUPER 8 FILM
WITH ORIGINAL SOUND
The 1970s were a time of change for railroads all over the
country—and all over the world. Roger Koenig was out with
his Super Eight movie cameras – recording much of the
train action before it was gone forever. Roger lived west and
south of the Windy City, so it was only natural he would frequently head for the hotbed of rail activity at Joliet Union Station. But he also visited Homewood, Blue Island, Oak Forest, and several other communities outside of
Chicago. He also got farther west – to savor the last remaining switching operation
handled exclusively by steam locomotives at Sterling, Illinois, until the early 1980s.
Ride with us now as we relive rail action in the 1970s and seen through the movie
camera lens of Roger Koenig. Approx. 68 Minutes

The HON3 version of the Rio Grande Southern is under
construction in the two adjacent rooms to the HON3 Rio
Grande. We’ll install Masonite hard board to all the inside
and outside corners of both rooms, trowel the joints with
joint compound, and paint an undercoat. We’ll show you
how to add over 100 feet of great backdrops from
Backdrop Warehouse. Bench work was next using the “LGirder” method. Then, the Goose Barn, the engine house tracks and the oil facilities at Dolores were plotted in. Next, we’ll show the construction of the engine
house at West Durango, we’ll build two tank farms, a small pump house, and a
small office building near Dolores. We’ll lay the track for the Rico engine house
and build a ramp to the coaling station at Rico, as well as the two coaling structures that were found at the end of the ramp. Next, we’ll start on bench work for
the Lizard Head and Ophir area...where our bridges 45A and 45B will be located.
Tracks ran around a deep valley at Ophir. At Ophir we’ll add a roll-out section to
allow access to the back corner and wall. We’ll build the Ridgway bench work and
lay track to include the turntable and roundhouse. Next we’ll build those bridges at
Ophir. Back at the Green Frog shops we’ll complete the turntable and roundhouse
module for Ridgway. Back at Rico, we’ll color the scenery, zip texture the surfaces, and add grasses and weeds from Woodland Scenics. We’ll install a unique
retaining wall made from a bunch of plaster castings. We’ll also construct the
town behind and above the mill, using N Scale structures! Watch for Part Two of

“The Rock Island Line was a mighty fine line.” The musical
ditty aside, there was something special about the Chicago,
Rock Island and Pacific Railroad that set it apart from other rail carriers. Maybe it was the
image of an underdog, surrounded on all sides by larger, more powerful—and richer—railroads. Maybe it was its short, fast passenger trains—appropriately named “Rockets”—
barreling across the Western Prairies. Maybe it was the granger railroad, quietly and
effectively going about serving its customers. Roger Koenig grew up in Brainerd on
Chicago’s South Side. It was the first stop at ground level on the Rock Island’s Suburban
Branch after leaving the main line at Gresham Junction. He often rode into the city on its
trains. Roger worked for two summers as an office boy for the railroad, and built his first
home in Oak Forest on the main line to Joliet. His summer home was near the Peoria
Branch. No wonder the Rock Island became his favorite railroad. This is Roger’s fastmoving movie kaleidoscope of The Rock during its final six years, from 1974 until shortly
before the railroad shut down forever on March 31st, 1980. Equipment Covered: New

PENN CENTRAL 5
DVD # CP103dvd $24.95
The Penn Central was a railroad suspended in financial limbo
when Emery Gulash shot these scenes in the mid-1970s.
Bankrupt since 1970, the re-organization court had decided in
May 1974 that, based on its income, the PC was not re-organizable. The future of the PC and a number of other bankrupt railroads in the Northeast was placed in the hands of a government
agency, the United States Railway Association. The middle of
the decade was the worst of times for the PC. It may not have
been the best of times for the trackside observers watching the
Penn Central’s trains in action—but the urgency was there to
record on film all that they could before the curtain dropped on the large fleet of Brunswick
Green locomotives, even as their appearance became a little shabbier. The rail action on
the PC was definitely dynamic. Eventually, Conrail picked up the pieces – but that is for the
next program in our Penn Central series. Locations include; Ypsilanti, MI., Ann Arbor, MI.,
Huntingdon, PA., Juniata River Valley, Horseshoe Curve, Conemaugh Jct., Carleton, Town

LINKING NORTH AND SOUTH
CSX & NS
THROUGH THE BORDER STATES
DVD # CP105dvd $19.95
The term “Border States” traces its roots back to the
American Civil War, and applies to the states of Kentucky,
Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland. These states mark
the border between The North and The South, and feature
dense forests, beautiful rivers, and the backbone of mountains that form the Appalachians. As a result, the railroads
that ultimately conquered this difficult terrain were forced to
construct numerous trestles, cuts, and tunnels. Photographer Rich Kugel takes us
on an incredible journey, through a land that is steeped in scenic beauty and historical significance. Highlights of this fascinating tour include:
* The CSX former Louisville and Nashville through Northern Kentucky
* Norfolk Southern’s legendary “Rathole” District
* Copper Creek Viaduct and Natural Tunnel in remote western Virginia
* The CSX former B&O, including Cumberland, Harpers Ferry, and Brunswick
* The CSX former Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac between Washington,
D.C. and Richmond, Virginia
The border states continue to witness daily battles, as CSX and Norfolk Southern
defiantly struggle against geography and surging traffic levels to link North and
South! Approx. 80 Minutes DVD Special Features Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo,

The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad was so
impoverished when Amtrak started up in May 1971 that it
could not afford to turn its long distance trains over to the new national passenger system. Instead, its four long distance intrastate trains—the two “Quad
Cities” to and from Moline on the main line and the “Peorians” serving the Peoria
Branch—continued to roll in and out of Chicago’s deteriorating LaSalle Street
Station even as the terminal had its trainshed roof removed and the daily trains
became shorter and shorter. These were all that remained of the once-proud
“Rock Island Rockets” that included the “Rocky Mountain Rocket” to Denver and
Colorado Springs and a timetable full of other trains. Some fans still referred to
the remaining trains by their earlier “Rocket” names. Meanwhile, Metra—the
Chicago Commuter Rail Service Authority—took over responsibility for the suburban trains run over the tracks of the Rock Island and most other Chicagoland
railroads. Roger Koenig was there with his Super Eight sound movie camera
recording the slow decline of the “Quad Cities” and “Peorian” and the Rock

Rails to Cincinnati
This video reveals why Cincinnati, Ohio is considered the
“Railroad Gateway to the South”. Cincinnati, an unlikely
location for a railroad gateway, is located amidst seven hills and the Ohio River.
The reason why this location became a hub is that, at one time, seven railroads
converged here.

The Dayton District is a railroad line owned and operated by the Norfolk

to Cincinnati, along former Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central Railroad

A ride on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway is more than a sightseeing trip through
one of the most beautiful places in the South. It’s also a history lesson and a trip
back to a simpler time. But mostly, it’s just a whole lot of fun.

BUILDING THE HON3 RGS PART 2
DVD # 20150 $24.95 WIDE & 4X3 FORMAT
DVD # 20151 $39.95 BLU-RAY 1080i HD 16x9
In this program, we’ll cover the construction of the coaling
ramp and the coal storage facilities at Rico. We’ll cover
the construction of the Rico station and the smaller buildings in the same area. We’ll show you how we built the
backdrop for Rico. We’ll scratch build a really neat structure of an “old” gasoline station of the 30's. Our artist Pat
Lemmerman will blend in some hand painted scenery to
our photo mural backdrop. We’ll take on the task of
adding the fascia board along a major section of the
bench work. We’ll show you how we built hundreds of pine trees. We used photos
of structures found in the area as a backdrop for our town of Rico. A neat looking
house was found in the area, and we’ll scratch build that structure as well. We’ll
add some additional scratch built structures as well as adding appropriate scenery.
The station and the water tank at Rico, will add to the scene. At Ridgeway, the railroad built a seven stall roundhouse, and we’ll show you how that was built, along
with a turntable. We’ll add the bench work, fascia board, and the structures and
scenery at Lizard Head. A bridge crosses over a small creek in this area, and we’ll
construct that as well as some scenery in this area. Since we’ll have some structures across the tracks at Rico, we’ll need to build a small road across the river.
And we’ll continue adding more scenery to this area.

This video will cover the CSX Toledo Sub. from Tipp City,
Ohio to Wapakoneta, Ohio and was shot from September
2008 to March of 2010. This busy single track line sees
abundant action during daylight hours and includes automotive trains carrying both parts and vehicles, commodity
trains such as ore, coal, and grain, as well as regular manifest trains. This particular area of the Toledo Sub. has a
concentrated number of passing sidings to make rail-fanning this line interesting.
In addition, most of these sidings are still controlled by CPL’s or Color Position
Light Signals. This fact alone brings many rail-fans to visit and photograph the
Toledo Sub. These ancient CPL’s are slowly being replaced by modern traffic light
type signals. Many of these scenes were shot in the frigid, snow blowing winter of
2009-2010. Other areas visited in this video will be Troy, Piqua, Kirkwood, Sidney

PENN CENTRAL 6
DVD # CP107 $19.95 WIDE & 4X3 FORMAT
DVD # 20158 $39.95 BLU-RAY 1080i HD 16x9
From the Camera of Emery Gulash -- From 16mm Color Film Long after the
Consolidated Rail Corporation, Conrail for short, absorbed the Penn Central and
six other railroads in the Northeast on April 1, 1976, many locomotives continued
to ply the rails in Brunswick Green paint, or in the paint schemes of the Erie
Lackawanna, Reading, Lehigh Valley, or other roads.
Even as newly painted blue Conrail locomotives appeared here and there, the old
power still held sway on the high iron, often with dark flanks after the Penn Central
name had been painted over and with the “CR” initials stenciled on the nose
where the interlocking PC emblem had once been.
Freight equipment went thorough a similar metamorphoses, as the newer cars
were slowly repainted and the older rolling stock was replaced.
This, then, is a very large railroad in transition, as Emery Gulash filmed the fading
Penn Central giant during the late 1970s. Locations include:Junction Yard Branch
in Detroit, Interstate 75 bridge, Altoona depot, Ypsilanti, MI., Ann Arbor, MI.,
Horseshoe Curve, Town Line, MI. Central Depot, Dearborn, MI., Detroit, Wayne

South Shore (America's Last Classic Interurban Railway) The Films of Roger
M. Koenig Volume 1 SCANNED FROM SUPER 8 MM FILM IN FULL 1080I HD
By the late 1970s, the Chicago, South Shore and South Bend Railroad was living
out the last years as a step-child of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. The C&O
had purchased the South Shore in 1965 as a bridge route for its freight business.
A decade later, the drain on revenues from extensive passenger operations was
taking its toll on the 91 mile railway running from downtown Chicago to South
Bend, Indiana. Born shortly after the dawn of the twentieth century, the South
Shore had been the sturdiest of Samuel Insull’s network of Midwestern electric
interurban railways and it managed to survive on that strength when all the others
faded away. By 1976, the paint on the cars was chipped and frayed, and the many
stations were becoming, well, a little run-down.
Despite this, the South Shore rolled on in the hands of its capable employees.
Join with us as we look at the 1976-1980 era South Shore through the movie camera lens of Roger M. Koenig.

displays the Santa Fe FT freight units, the PA passenger power, and a variety of

All New--From the Camera of Emery Gulash! Detroit Passenger Trains 60’s and
70’s (16mm Color Film From The Camera of Emery Gulash)
Detroit has a long history as a vibrant railroad city. Nearly a half-century ago,
when Emery Gulash shot these action scenes of passenger trains in and around
Motor City, more than a half dozen major railroads served the area, most with their
own distinctive passenger service, often with cars from different railroads in the
same colorful train. Today all of them are fallen flags, absorbed or merged into
larger companies during the non-stop mergers of the 1960s and 1970s. Go back
with us to that era for a real blast from railroading’s past. It was the Last Hurrah
before the homogenization of passenger service nationwide by Amtrak.
This program includes footage of the following: B&O, C&O, Canadian National,
Pere Marquette, N&W, Penn Central, Wabash, GT, NYC, Canadian Pacific, Budd
