A motorist was driving in the country when he
came upon a priest, a minister, and a rabbi standing on the shoulder of the road, fishing.
Next to them was a
sign that read “Turn
Around. The end is
near.”
The motorist didn’t like being preached to, so he
rolled down the window and yelled, “Mind your
own business, you religious nuts!”
A few seconds later the three fishermen heard
tires screech, then a splash. The rabbi tuned to
the minister and priest and said, “I told you we
should’ve just written, “Bridge Out.”

THE MARKETING EDGE
By Jay Philippone
They decided it was time to go into business for themselves. Three
women quit their jobs, secured adequate financing and each opened
up their own restaurant. All had good food with similar menus and
excellent locations. They promoted their businesses, advertised in
the same places and even had identical marketing budgets.
One prospered, one survived and one went out of business. Why? If
they were all so similar, why did each have such different results?
There are a lot of factors that go into business success. Advertising
and marketing are critical success factors, but not the only factors.
The woman who’s business failed could have spent millions on advertising and in the end it wouldn’t have mattered. Her food was
good, but the service was not. The servers were indifferent and the
restrooms were always dirty. When business slowed she cut her
hours back and her customers couldn’t be sure when her restaurant
was open. The reputation of the business suffered. No form of marketing could overcome the negative reputation the restaurant developed. The personal experience factor of her customers could not be
overcome by advertising.
The women whose business survived had the same good food, good
service and a clean facility. When you went to eat there you know
what you were going to get and were rarely disappointed. It was a
good, average restaurant, but they did nothing to make the restaurant stand out. She spent as much in advertising as the women who
was successful but did not see the same results.
The most successful women’s restaurant had food that was no better than the others, but her staff provided outstanding service.
They made the effort to learn the name of every customer that ate
in the restaurant. The servers knew what to recommend and always
made a suggestion for a beverage and dessert. It was no surprise
that customers came back often and the average check was significantly higher than the other two restaurants.
Remember the successful woman’s advertising budget was no more
than the others. They all spent what the average restaurant spends
on advertising in the same media. The successful woman’s ads were
better, but that’s not so surprising considering her approach to her
business. What makes a better ad is the topic of next month’s column. Even if her ads were the same type as her competitors her
customer service was superior and that makes the difference in this
story. It’s important for your checkbook and your sanity to know
what advertising can and cannot do.
Advertising CAN create awareness. It can let people know you exist
and why you think they should buy from you. One of the biggest
marketing mistakes made today is the assumption that “everyone
knows we’re here.”
Advertising CAN make the suggestion to those making a purchase
decision today. For example, most restaurant decisions are made
within two hour of mealtime. Advertising exposure in this time period can be very powerful for a restaurant because they can ask for
your business at the time you are making your decision about where
to eat.
Conclusion in next column to right

CUTTING THE RIBBON
Salon 405 is the newest styling salon in the area. Shop owners
Hope Bailey and Andra Bowser assure the customers of a friendly,
professional and full-service operation. Walk-ins are welcome; or
to call for an appointment, 375-2222. Salon 405 is located on
Shaffer Road near the Maple Avenue intersection.
Shown above from left to right are Jackie Allen, Chamber Member
Services; co-owners Andra Bowser and Hope Bailey; and Susan
Loskoski, Chamber Administrative Assistant.
THE MARKETING EDGE…..continued
Advertising CAN create “Top of Mind Awareness” or TOMA. This
simply means people associate your name with your business
category. If you are working in the basement and your hammer
breaks you usually go to the place you think of first. This is a powerful position to own because TOMA market leaders are considered first in purchase decisions.
Advertising CANNOT overcome poor selection, low quality, uncompetitive prices, inconvenient hours, poor service, a lack of expertise or an unattractive or cluttered facility. If the product or
service you sell does not meet the needs or expectations of your
customers you can advertise anywhere and everywhere and not
get a return on your investment.
Advertising CANNOT fix a broken business.
Ask any businessperson what marketing is and you’ll get probably
get a different definition from each person you ask. Advertising is
only one component part of marketing. Price, Product, Promotion
and Service are all vital parts of marketing. A breakdown in any
one of these areas and your advertising won’t meet your expectations.

Advertising will help you get people through the door. The ideas
in this book will help you keep them coming back.

My Time at the Chamber
by Gregory Basl
When I joined the Greater DuBois Chamber of Commerce as
an intern back in August, I knew that I was starting something good. On my first day, I got to attend two different
board meetings, throwing me right into the Chamber’s environment. Later that week, I was given the opportunity to
tour a well site in S.B. Elliott State Park with approximately
200 people from local businesses. The next three months
would follow with numerous mixers and events, allowing
me to meet hundreds of community members.
During my time with the DuBois Chamber, I was assigned a
project to complete as part of my internship requirements.
Nancy Micks, the DuBois Chamber president, suggested that
I revise and update the current PA Wilds Tourism Book. The
first tourism book was written back in 2007 by a past Chamber intern, Jodi Foster. Since that time, much of the book’s
content had become outdated and needed revised. When I
wasn’t helping organize events, attending mixers, or sitting
in on meetings, I spent my time in the office conducting research and writing content for the new tourism book. By
the end of October, the revised PA Wilds Tourism Book was
completely revised, edited, and ready for the printers.
As I previously mentioned, I had a positive feeling about
working for the Chamber right from the beginning. In my
opinion, it seemed like one of the best internships to capitalize on as a business major. I found myself utilizing and
applying many of the concepts I learned from my business
classes at Penn State in the office and at the Chamber
events. One thing that I did not anticipate was how my internship at the Chamber would prove to be even more relevant to what I chose to pursue as a career. The Chamber
promotes anything and everything that brings tourism and
opportunity to the area. Thus, I found myself immersed
with events and information pertaining to the Marcellus
Shale gas play in Pennsylvania. About a month ago I decided
that the oil and gas industry was where I wanted to be after
graduation. The Chamber turned out to be the absolute
perfect internship option in terms of learning about the
Marcellus Shale and making contacts with companies associated with the oil and gas industry. In hindsight, I couldn’t
have picked a better internship –
Thank you Greater DuBois Chamber of Commerce!

Tourism in Clearfield County
This note came from Peggy Durant owner of the Victorian Loft
B&B in Clearfield…
Attached is a picture of Sophie and Jerome Halimi, from Nice,
France who stopped in Clearfield for two nights, three days on their
honeymoon which also included New Orleans, Washington, D.C.,
Atlantic City, New York and finally Montreal. They arrived in
Clearfield last Friday by bus from Washington, D.C. They specifically wanted to experience life in small town America. They also
wanted to do something big they could never experience in France.
They found the perfect mix of small town USA and something
BIG....in Clearfield with the 15 pound Belly Buster burger at
Denny's Beer Barrel Pub. With bun and condiments, the burger
weighed over 20 pounds.
As the owner of the Victorian Loft Bed & Breakfast, having guests
make a reservation to go to Denny's for the world's largest hamburger is not an unusual occurrance - but I have to admit that I was
more than a little surprised to receive the reservation request and to
learn of the reason why they were traveling here. Sophie said they
wanted to do something uniquely American. While planning their
trip, she googled "big burger" and Clearfield and Denny's Beer
Barrel Pub were the first result to pop up.
They were pretty astonished at the size of the burger when it
was delivered to their table. Following their meal at Denny's,
they brought more than 3/4ths of the burger back to the bed &
breakfast and said they wanted to donate it to a charity if possible. I contacted Marion House and they agreed to accept the
remaining 12-13 pounds of burger, bun and condiments.
On Saturday Sophie and Jerome spent the day on foot in Clearfield,
visiting a number of downtown stores, Ethan's Cafe for lunch, and
attended a movie at the Ritz Theater. We had a delightful time with
Sophie and Jerome and they thoroughly enjoyed their stay in Clearfield. I took them back to the bus station this morning to continue
their journey to Atlantic City. They will be in NYC for Thanksgiving and then go to Montreal for a few days before flying back home
to Nice, France (which happens to be on the French Riviera...a
place most folks would consider a honeymoon destination).
The honeymoon’s only beginning for Sophie and Jerome Halami as
they get their first look at the 15 pound Belly Buster burger at
Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub in Clearfield. They are shown about with
Denny Leigey, owner of Denny’s.
