5mm Beetle Could Bring Down 50 Ton Live Oak
Submitted by Pete Dufau, Dufau Landscape, Inc. and CLCA Director of Legislation
UC Riverside has issued an alert on the
Western Bark Beetle that is now vectoring
the fatal Foamy Bark Canker fungus to
Coast Live Oaks in California from
Monterey County south to Orange County.
Until now, the beetle had not been known
to carry the disease. Stress induced by the
current drought is also making trees more
susceptible to the disease. The spread of
this disease could create catastrophic
damage to California’s native oak forests
and urban trees alike.
Foamy Bark Canker fungus blocks the
flow of water and nutrients in both the
xylem and phloem tissues of the tree.
Evidence of the active fungus is a reddish
sap and cream colored foam oozing from
the cambium layer of the bark. The only
evidence on a near dead tree may be the
small bore holes left by the beetle.
Look for evidence of the beetle or
disease on Coast Live Oaks in the
landscape and also in areas surrounding
the landscape. Infected trees should be
immediately removed and the wood
chipped or burned.
Management
Practically nothing can be done to control
most bark beetles once trees have been
attacked. Because the beetles live in the
protected habitat beneath the bark, it is
difficult to control them with insecticides
after an infestation has occured.
Prune or cut the bark beetle-infested
limbs from trees or shrubs. Dispose of the
infested wood by chipping or burning it.
If the main trunk is attacked by bark
beetles and diseased, the entire tree or
shrub should be removed and disposed of
immediately. Infested trees and cuttings
must be quickly removed, burned, or
chipped on site to erradicate the beetles
and curtail the spread of the disease.
Never pile infested material adjacent to a
live tree or shrub.
As the drought continues in California,
stressed Live Oaks will become more
common and the disease may spread more
quickly. It is important to maintain the
health and meet the water requirements
of oak trees under your care. Trees that
CLCA San Diego Chapter • June 2014
have been irrigated tend to be dependent
on that water to stay healthy. Deep root
watering of trees is more beneficial than
surface applications of water.
Chemical Control
Chemical treatments applied to the bark
of the tree target the adults. The beetles
are killed when they land on a treated tree
and attempt to bore into the bark to lay
their eggs. Chemically treating trees that
have been previously attacked provides
no significant benefit and could harm
beneficial insects. Systemic insecticides
have NOT been shown to prevent attack
or control populations of bark beetles.
How to Apply Insecticides
Protective spraying for bark beetles must
be done by a licensed pesticide applicator.
They will determine the specific pesticide
to be used and effective timing of the
application. To prevent new bark beetle
infestations, thoroughly drench the main
trunk, exposed root collar near the base of
the tree, and larger branches with a
pyrethroid, such as Astro or Dragnet, or
any of the flowable (EC) formulations of
the chemical carbaryl. The material must
be applied before the new adults
penetrate the bark surface of the tree
Biological Control
Predators and parasites such as
woodpeckers, several predaceous beetles,
snakeflies, and parasitic wasps are
attracted to feeding and mating bark
beetles. Predators are more important than
parasites in regulating bark beetle
populations. It is highly unlikely that
natural enemies will save an infested tree;
however, they can reduce bark beetle
population size thereby reducing the
threat to nearby trees. The release of
predators and/or parasites into sites
infested with bark beetles has not been an
effective tactic to suppress bark beetle
populations.
As landscape professionals, it is our
obligation to protect the assets of our
clients. Please be vigilant of this new
threat as part of your landscape
maintenance practices.

Mr. Mean Mustard Blows
Lawrence O’Leary, HydroScape Products Inc.
CLCA San Diego Chapter President
The San Diego Chapter of CLCA remains
fiscally secure and led by supportive
members. Thanks for your involvement
and strong support of your organization
and our green industry.
It was hot in mid-May. Water use has
been up, the soil is dry and the cost of
resources is climbing nearly 7% per year.
That’s inflation to a big degree my friends.
Adding insult to injury, Mr. Mustard
reared up and fueled society’s heated
discussion on “will weather patterns or
Climate Change kill us first?”
On Tuesday, May 13, the San Diego
Chapter Board settled in at Coco’s in
Rancho Bernardo for a nice breakfast,
required action, and friendly discussion.
By 9 a.m. the Santa Ana winds were
already sweeping down from the Julian
area headed to the coast. Heated winds
and dry vegetation coupled with poor

choices led to several conflagrations
around the county. A construction
operator scrapping granite with a backhoe
shovel kicked off the first fire. Two days
later there were a total of seven fires
within our County. Heated Asian mustard
colored smoke filled the skies as if to say,
“bring me all your water.” Even more
unwanted competition for that valuable
resource.
Wiser choices still have to be made,
including how our trade reacts to Mr.
Mustard. When it blows, consider heading
to the office for a safety day. When Mr.
Mustard isn’t blowing; Plan, Prepare and
Clear appropriately. The question of
evacuating when emanate danger isn’t
even close to reality seems silly. But it
gives politicians something to talk about.
I recently learned it took the reactions of
an Eagle Scout candidate to protect

several properties. I still remember young
men commandeering a water truck to
successfully save houses a decade ago.
I had involvement with the Cedar Fire
(400,000 acres burnt and many lives lost)
ten and a half years ago. It was started by
total stupidity near my home and for
allegedly illegal reasons. The Cedar Fire,
like many fires that are occurring in our
local riverbed watersheds and National
Forests, happened because of competition
for space by urban dweller’s and pot
growers.
I vividly remember John Coleman’s
Saturday night report on KUSI television
on a Fall-Back weekend, days before
Halloween in 2003. He told us the Santa
Ana Winds were a-coming. On cue, the
Cedar Fire started at around 7 p.m. on
October 25, the same night the Florida
Marlins were going to beat the New York
Yankees to win the 2003 World Series.
Yes, the wild-card Marlins beat the hated
Yankees. The game had very good ratings.
Who wasn’t watching? I strongly believe
that that game had something to do with
the slow to no-reaction by those who are
paid to react. I was awakened at 4:30 a.m.

Landscape Industry Certified Technician Update
Congratulations to Newly Certified
The Landscape Industry Certified
Technician spring test was held at the test
site at Cuyamaca College last April. As
always, the event brought tremendous
support from the CLCA San Diego chapter
and community. On test day the site was
buzzy with activity. Applicants were busy
testing in five different modules, and
volunteers were making that possible
performing jobs ranging from judging to
timekeeping to cooking. Topping it off were
visitors from the college touring the site.
All in all it was a great day!
Thank you very much to Ron Zaccaro,
state certification committee chair, the
CLCA San Diego chapter and the following
companies for their support through
sponsorship, time, and donations. The test
would not be possible without the help of
these fantastic volunteers. We couldn’t
have done it without you!

to assist with horses and grandkids. Radio
and TV reporters were oblivious until
twelve hours later -- 7 a.m. the next day.
By that time, mean and dirty old Mr.
Mustard was already into Scripps Ranch,
leaving behind dead people in and around
Wild Cat Canyon. Mr. Mustard was
relentless for 2 days, and then Coastal
Eddie took over and the winds shifted.
Before the Cedar Fire, other fires were
occupying resources in southern
California including the Old Fire at Lake

first fire vehicle I saw was the Napa Valley
Fire Department four days after the fire
started. Then a few days later, after
Cuyamaca burned and Julian was next, an
old friend, an industry ex-patriot, a former
San Diego C-27 licensee (so I have to
believe this), commanded his Calistogabased Volunteer Fire Department team in
an old rig and saved Julian.
Happily, improvements have been
made since then; more helicopters, DC10’s, military air support and regular folk
with fire extinguishers and basic water
trucks lessen the load. More lessons are
needed; my favorite is knock down
wooden property fences.
Even with our drought cycle occurring,
we really don’t have to have more fires.
Smart trumps stupid and reaction vs.
inaction will equal preserved open spaces
and the species that live there. Sure,
smaller fires and fewer fires will result in
less overtime for the first responders, but
it also equals less CO2 released and
resources consumed, including water.
Let’s keep the water flowing for landscape
and landscape buffers. Stop that mean old
man, that dirty old man, Mr. Mustard.
