Haddonfield students
take part in Japanese
exchange program
By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
The Haddonfield Japan Exchange was formed in 2006 and
has since been hosting a program
that allows Haddonfield students
to go to Japan every other year,
while students from Japan visit
Haddonfield during the off years.
The program has continued to
evolve, and this year’s trip saw
the inclusion of a few initiatives
that have greatly increased the
education and enjoyment for the
students.
“Every time we have gone to
Japan with the students, it has
been amazing,” Bill Brown, director of HJE, said. “With each year,
though, we have been able to integrate technology more to make
the trip even better. This year, the
students were able to write daily
journal entries that were sent
back to us in Haddonfield. It’s a
great way to see what the kids are
doing and what we need to do
more of in the future.”
It isn’t the first time the students have been asked to keep
journals, but it’s one of the first

Construction continued on Grove Street on Aug. 21. The project began in late May and has forced the closure of Grove Street for much of
the summer. While work was slated to be finished by mid-August, Grove Street will remain closed to thru-traffic until at least Aug. 29. The
current phase of the project is taking place at the corner of Maple Avenue and Grove Street, where sewer and utility work is being done.

Superintendent Richard Perry
offers vision for new school year
By KYLE CARNEY
The Sun
With the school year set to
start, Superintendent Richard
Perry has some district-wide and
individual goals he expects will
make the year even better.
“The primary district goal for
this school year is applying critical thinking skills to digital learners for the 21st century,” Perry
said. “In addition, during the
2014-15 school year, the district
will focus on supporting educators to continue teaching in the
tradition of innovation, rigor, engagement and creativity for student success.”
The district received several
commendations for its participation in the state pilot teacher evaluation program, which uses a
new technology platform to collect data on student and teacher
performance.
Many of the initiatives parents
and students can expect in the up-
coming school year have to do
with technology.
The district has created a digital badge website for teachers for
self-guided professional development for integrating technology
into instruction. All schools have
implemented technology maps
along with academic enrichment
being developed for afterschool
programs focused on STEM inquiry, critical thinking and teamwork, and electronic techbooks
have been successfully piloted.
While these programs will be
used across the board, Perry also
has a vision specifically for the
high school.
“Several dynamic programs
and initiatives will be implemented at the high school during this
upcoming 2014-15 school year to

Campoli, McGrath engaged to wed
Roland and Cindy Cosden
(mother) are happy to announce
the engagement of their daughter
and daughter of the late Dr. Orlando Campoli, Kimberly Campoli, to Dr. Robert C. McGrath,
son of Jim and Janis Bush (mother) and Dr. Robert McGrath (father) on Aug. 8.
In a truly romantic gesture,
Robert rented a helicopter that
the pilot landed on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Malibu where he kneeled on one knee
and proposed to Kimberly. Kimberly said it was more magical
than any movie.

Calling all coaches, parents and players – we need your help this season
ne more week. That’s all that
we have left of summer. Technically, there are about four
weeks left, but in the lives of us New
Jersey residents, next Wednesday –
when most schools go back in session
for the 2014-2015 year – marks the end
to our summer.
No more beach. No more pool. No
more fun – OK, maybe that’s a bit dramatic.
But it’s not all doom and gloom with
summer gone. In fact, there’s plenty to
be excited about, and we’ve been hard
at work covering this excitement already.
Our senior associate editor, Nick
Cohen, loves this time of year. That’s
because the end of August means the
start of one of his passions – covering
sports. Nick has been on the summer
sports camp trail for a week or so now,
and he will continue to be out and
about on local fields as our high school

teams continue to prepare for the upcoming season.
Soon, you’ll see some of the photos
Nick and our other editors have taken
at these camps. Soon, you’ll begin reading more about the teams, players and
coaches who are involved in the games
they love. And soon, in two weeks to be
exact, you’ll be receiving The Sun’s
regular High School Fall Sports Preview guide.
Our fall sports preview special section is a stand-alone piece previewing
each high school fall sport, with full
schedules for the entire season and feature stories as well.
Nick is reaching out to every high
school coach and athletic director for
the fall season for the section. But
we’re calling on parents, coaches and
even players to participate as well.
Sports will be a major focus of upcoming issues of The Sun, as you’ll
soon see. And not just high school varsity sports. We want to cover the JV
and freshmen teams, as well as all the
community sports teams.
But we can’t do it all by ourselves.
We need the help of the extended community.
Have a story idea, a score, a picture?
Send it over.
If we can’t send an editor out to do a
full-length story and photoshoot, we’ll
make sure your team, sport, league or
club is still covered.
Our doors are always open – as are
our phone lines and inboxes. Let’s
make this fall sports season one to remember!

Freeholders award municipal
recreation grants
By Freeholder Jeffrey Nash
The Camden County
Recreation
Facility
Grant Program provides
opportunities for little
leagues, soccer programs and a variety of
other local institutions
to expand and maintain
their facilities. The
grants, funded through
the Camden County Open Space Preservation Trust Fund, are presented to local
recreation programs that keep our kids on
the field and youth sports vibrant in our
area.
Thanks to this program, key recreation
improvement projects have been indentified to enhance the quality of life for residents across Camden County. In many
cases, these projects would not have been
considered to be undertaken with strained
local resources. Every year these grants are
funding important projects. This year’s
projects are no different, from playground
and athletic field additions to new multi-use
trails and facility improvements at community centers.
The Freeholder Board approved the recommendations of the Advisory Committee
to award the 2014 Recreation Facility Enhancement Project Grants at our August
meeting. We are now in the process of visiting the municipal organizations that have
been identified for funding. This year’s applications represented a wide range of projects throughout the county to keep our
fields green and our kids active. We appreciate the hard work and planning that went
into each request.
This year, Camden County Recreation
Facility Grant Program grants will benefit
worthwhile projects in Audubon Park, Bellmawr, Berlin Township, Brooklawn, Camden City, Cherry Hill Township,
Chesilhurst, Collingswood, Gibbsboro,
Gloucester City, Gloucester Township, Haddon Heights, Haddon Township, Laurel
Springs, Lawnside, Lindenwold, Magnolia, Mt.
Ephraim,
Oaklyn,
Pennsauken Township,
Pine Hill, Runnemede,
Voorhees
Township,
Winslow Township and
Woodlynne.
Camden County is
committed to preserving
our parks, natural areas and farmland not
only for their scenic value, but for their continued use and enjoyment. To ensure that
our children, and their children, will have
the benefit of these facilities for years to
come, the Camden County Open Space
Preservation Trust Fund Advisory Committee was appointed by the Freeholder
Board. The diverse committee provides the
Freeholder Board with guidance regarding
the implementation of the Open Space
Preservation Trust Fund. The Camden
County Open Space Preservation Trust
Fund was created by the Freeholder Board
in 1999 in response to overwhelming voter
support of an open space referendum
placed on the ballot in November 1998.
Each year, municipal organizations are
invited to submit an application detailing
the enhancements planned for their existing recreation facilities for consideration to
the Advisory Committee. Although the requests for funding are limited to $25,000 per
project each year, municipal organizations
may submit additional requests for funding
in the following year. The projects must be
completed within a one year period.

Recreation Project Grant Program, visit

times those entries have been
able to be shared so quickly. With
the constant communication,
Brown feels the HJE will be able
to understand what works the
best for the students.
“It is very important to us that
we know what the students
enjoy,” Brown said. “This trip is
supposed to be educational, but
it’s also supposed to be fun. We
want to get as much feedback
while the students are over there
as we can, so we can make the
trip better each time we go.”
Between the journals and the
post-trip survey, Brown has been
able to narrow down some of the
most significant aspects of the
trip, which he says has surprised
him.
“I would have expected the students to have said that the excursions and tours were their favorite part of the program, but
many of them have said that
spending time with their host
families was the best part of the
trip,” Brown said. “That is one of
the unique aspects of our pro-
gram that you don’t see in some of
the other similar ones.”
Every student going to Japan
as part of the HJE program is assigned an individual host family.
In many similar programs, there
are a few students assigned to
each host family.
“We want to completely immerse our students in the culture,” Brown said. “When you put
a few students together with one
host family, they can lean on each
other and don’t have to participate with the host family as
much. So, to ensure that the students have to be a part of the culture, we only assign one student
to each host family.”
The tactic seems to be working,
as Brown sees almost all-positive
feedback from the students.
“The students always come
back with nothing but great
things to say about Japan and the
culture,” Brown said. “We’re trying to show them that despite the
very different cultures, the values
are basically the same.”
Next summer, Haddonfield will
again play host to Japanese students. To learn more about the

Haddonfield Plays & Players present
‘An Inspector Calls’ Sept. 11-27
Haddonfield Plays & Players
present “An Inspector Calls” by J.
B. Priestley from Thursday, Sept.
11, through Saturday, Sept. 27.
In 1912 England, the Birling
family hosts a lavish dinner party
to celebrate their daughter's engagement.
A knock on the door brings a
determined police inspector, investigating the death of a young
girl.
What starts as an evening of
celebration in a close-knit family
steadily deteriorates as the in-
spector continues his probing
questions.
As the night wears on, the
stunned family begins to unearth
secrets that slowly unravel the
mystery surrounding the girl's
death.
But it is only after the inspector leaves that they discover the
final twist in the tale.
J. B. Priestley's classic thriller
of mystery and suspense is a
timeless ghost story that asks
many more questions than it answers.

Dear Haddonfield Residents:
We are at a unique place in time where the new digital economy is opening unprecedented opportunities for students. Transformation in education to project-based learning is
challenging the way we teach and ready students for the future. Once again, the pioneers
and groundbreakers will have the opportunity to lead the way.
Across the nation and in 30 countries, school systems use the Destination Imagination challenge-based educational program to teach students how to think not just what to think. With
the current focus on teaching to standards, students are not having the opportunity to imagine and be creative, which are skills need to address a changing world. Destination Imagination seeks to ensure that students and educators receive the training and business acumen
to challenge conventional processes. The ability to design the future and to imagine new
ways of combining old with new will be the game changing skill for our students.
As the Chief Executive Officer for Destination Imagination and a resident of Haddonfield, I am passionate about supporting and promoting health and wellness, imagination,
contextual learning, arts appreciation, STEM-based innovation skills development, and entrepreneurship leading to an engaged and future-ready student population. Learning how
and when to be creative, how to build teams, how to manage budgets and risk, how to present
a compelling proposal, and how to manage a project from beginning to end will provide students with the necessary skills to become the next generation of innovators and leaders.
I believe Haddonfield is at an inflection point in history. As our town seeks to prepare students for emerging jobs in life sciences, cyber-security, aeronautics, energy and the
environment, smart cities and global trade, we need to infuse project management and creativity into the curriculum. Our students will be the pioneers and groundbreakers that will
lead change in the new economy. For this reason, there should be a sense of urgency and importance to giving students the opportunity to learn and experience the creative process
from imagination to innovation. Recently I met with Superintendent Rich Perry and Mike
Moynihan, Executive Director of Camden United Way. These meetings confirmed that we
all share a strong desire to ready our students for the future and for jobs not even invented
yet. I look forward to working in partnership with Haddonfield on this extremely important
initiative.
Sincerely,
Chuck Cadle, Ed.D., CPA
at the Centennial Tennis Courts.

Perry has also recognized the

its community bond by using eblasts and social media, including
Facebook and Twitter. Perry has
also initiated a post-site at

his thoughts and vision with the

But, while there will be a lot of
changes made and new programs,
Perry continues to focus on the
teachers and community.
“While programs and initiatives are important, what truly
makes a school great are the people that foster a love for learning.
We have smart, creative and dedicated teachers, eager to begin the
new school year,” Perry said. “We
are proud and excited to introduce new faculty and staff to our
school communities. The new
teachers selected to join our faculty were chosen because of their
strong commitment to studentcentered education. These new
hires join existing staff, and will
work collaboratively to engage
the students of Haddonfield in a
rich and meaningful school experience.”
