Chair
from the
Sean Sargent
You may want to have a look around you to
see what your Hospital Foundation has done
in your community.
Better yet, look around you to find out what
the donors of this region have done by giving
a gift to your Hospital Foundation. The QEII
Hospital Foundation has been around since
1987. Since this time nearly 10 million dollars has been raised for this Hospital and the
programs within. Countless pieces of equipment have been purchased including an MRI,
a CT Scanner, ultrasounds, surgical equipment, trauma equipment and much, much
more. What this also means is less time
waiting for appointments and procedures. As
well, the cost and hassle of having to drive
to a larger center or to arrange accommodations has reduced significantly over the years
as many of these procedures can now be
delivered locally. In addition, these generous
gifts offer the comfort of a friend or a family
member who in the past wouldn’t have been
able to support a loved one when having to
travel away from home.
services are covered, there is so much more
that our community needs. The health of your
family should never be a second thought so
these are the great reasons why we support
our Foundation.
Your Hospital Foundation is governed by a
group of dedicated Trustees who give their
time and expertise to ensure your community is getting the finest in health care advancements to manage both day to day procedures
and crisis needs. The Board of Trustees also
manages a team of hard-working employees
who really do care about where every dollar donated goes so that
the absolute best can be
offered to the residents of
this regional community.
While there are so many
charities that are so important, please remember to consider your Hospital as one day you may
also need these services
to assist in your own
healthcare needs.
There is absolutely no doubt that everyone
knows someone who has needed medical
attention locally so supporting your Hospital Foundation truly touches each and
every one of us. Some say that the government should be providing all of these
services but the truth is that while basic

wonder
of the season
6 | Annual Report 2010 - 2011
The Festival of Trees lends the first breath of magic to the
Spirit of Christmas in the Peace Region; and initiates the
official beginning to the Holiday Season for all!
Over 30,000 visitors from infants to seniors enjoyed the winter wonderland
splendour of lights, trees, creations,
festive trims, gingerbread houses and
just about everything you can imagine
that has anything to do with Christmas. Our 4 day event boasts all the
sights, sounds, aromas, and traditions
of the Holidays. This was our second
year at the TEC Centre at Evergreen
Park, and we love the amount of
space we have to work with and the
ability to have the sleigh rides through
the light display as well. The first night
is the premier viewing of the Festival.
Guests take pleasure in a fabulous
Gala Evening and Auction, which this
year included an impressive 3-course
plated dinner. During the Festival,
guests enjoy entertainment, special
children’s activities, treats and goodies,
the gift shops, raffles, sleigh rides, and
of course, Santa! Teddy Bear Breakfast on Sunday is always a hit with the
children and is a great
way to enjoy the Festival as a family.
We want to thank all
our valued sponsors
for your continued support over the years. Our
Festival of Trees would
not realize the success it has achieved
over the past 22 years
without your generous
patronage. Going forward, 2011 marks the
23rd anniversary for the
Festival and the introduction of some exciting new changes. We
hope you will be a part
of our magical adventure in both community spirit and in supporting the Hospital
with your kind-hearted
sponsorship.
We begin coordinating
the Festival of Trees
in February, so if you
would like to get involved as a sponsor or
as a volunteer, please
call our office any time.

Therapeutic
Clown program
“Butterfly” is a Therapeutic Clown who has been included as
part of our hospital to create a special atmosphere for children
and even adults. For many, a hospital can be an uncertain environment filled with fear, pain, and loneliness.
Laughter
truly is the
Best Medicine
The QEII Hospital Foundation is proud of its innovative Therapeutic Clown program “Butterfly”, Therapeutic Clowns are a
not-for-profit program dedicated to bringing the healing attributes of laughter and happiness to children in healthcare facilities. The success of similar programs in other hospitals have
helped to shape this program here at the QEII Hospital.
Our Therapeutic Clown Program is available only
through the support of the community. With
your supportive donations, we can continue to offer this important program.
Minimizing the stress for our young
patients and their families during
treatments, while having medical
procedures, or to fill the time
while family members wait for
a loved one to have surgery
can be a great comfort.
With the support of the
community we can truly
Make a Difference in the
lives of hospitalized children and their families here
at the QEII Hospital.

The
Cradle
Wall
Well there is nothing like the first time you see a
smiling child know and understand that their name
is forever commemorated on the Cradle Wall in the
Hospital in which they were born. This little footprint
is a symbol of the most treasured moment in time
and although heartwarming it means even more. Every footprint purchased is honored by a monetary
gift to the QEII Hospital Foundation. With these
funds more and more gifts are passed on so the
people of this region get the medical assistance that is so important. So the old cliché
of “a gift that keeps on giving” is truly expressed with each one of these tiny little
feet. The Cradle Wall was designed and
painted by Tim Heimdal and is located on
the main floor of the QEII Hospital. With
each donation of $125 you receive a specially engraved pewter footprint highlighting the child’s name and date of birth. Your
gift will also support the QEII Hospital and a
tax receipt for $100 will be provided. Celebrating the birth of a child is touching but knowing that
your gift is also supporting your local Hospital makes
this even more precious. Generations to come will
benefit from your generosity and each child will be
forever celebrated.

Visual
Medicine treats our diseases;
the Arts lift the spirit
assisting in the
Palliative
overall wellness
of the body.
The Visual Arts Program has been active at the QEII
since the early 1980’s, thanks to some visionaries
who realized the importance of art in the hospital
environment. At the QEII Hospital our gallery, our
art collection, and our Visual Arts Program continue
to enhance the quality of care. We have utilized
artwork to improve the physical environment for our patients, staff and visitors.
When you make a space engaging
and stimulating you can positively
affect one’s mental wellbeing
thus contributing to an effective healing process.
Care Unit
Upgrade
To better accommodate palliative patients
and their families, this project included the
upgrading of six patient rooms and a family
meeting place. The upgrades to the rooms
are designed to provide additional comfort for
the patient and the attending family. Upgrades
include special beds and mattresses, furniture,
renovations, amenities and an upgrade to the
family lounge.
The contributors to this project were: the Estate of Robert M. Scott $192,500, the Grande
Prairie Trumpeters Lions Club $25,750 and
the Grande Prairie Hospice Palliative Care
Society $12,000.
The Visual Arts Committee
is involved in the Foundation’s events, inviting
local artists to display
their art at the Festival
of Trees which includes
the Art Market and at
the Dream Home.
Arts
The Courtyard Gallery and the cubicles at the QEII as well are continually changing with a variety of local art
and interesting displays. We invite
you to come by and have a look.
This year we have been working
on two major projects. The first
was the commissioning of six paintings which will be placed above the
palliative care beds in the ceiling. This
enables the patients to look at something other than just a T-Bar ceiling.
Our second major project was the upgrade to the Open Air Garden which
is on the rooftop adjacent to the pediatric floor. Both projects we hope
to have complete by early next year.
The dedication of our volunteer Visual Arts Committee ensures the
success and continuation of our visual arts programs.
Integrated
Surgical Suites
With the high cost of specialized equipment
being well above and beyond what government budgets will allow for, the QEII Hospital
Foundation stepped in to help raise money
for the much-needed Integrated Surgical
Suites project. Total funds raised for this
project was $1,046,994.
The Integrated Surgical Suites will allow
many patients to have their surgical procedures performed right here in Grande
Prairie without the need to travel. It also
provides an opportunity for our surgeons to be more specialized in their
area of expertise. We are very fortunate to have a group of specialized
surgeons in Grande Prairie, and the
more state-of-the-art surgical equipment and space we can provide, the
better it will be for our patients of our
region.
2010 Dream Home
Donation to NICU
With the donation from the 2010 Dream
Home Lottery proceeds, the QEII Hospital
was able to purchase $100,000 worth of
equipment for the Pediatric and Neonatal
Intensive Care Resuscitation Room Project. Most of the project could be covered
by this donation, and will be a benefit to
the NICU.

Volunteers
are the heart
of the QEII
Hospital
Foundation
We at the QEII Hospital Foundation would like to gratefully
acknowledge the generous gift our volunteers give where it
truly makes a difference. Providing information and comfort,
a warm smile, a caring hand, active in fundraising and special
events; our volunteers help in so many ways and make such
a valuable difference in the lives of patients, visitors, staff and
physicians at the QEII Hospital.
Without our volunteers our major events would not be possible. Thank You… You are our greatest asset!
I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can
do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere
with what I can do!
