Jait Re Jait is one of the greatest musical hits of all time in Marathi cinema.
An excellent screen-adaptation of G N Dandekar's novel, ‘Jait Re Jait’ is a movie with Smita Patil playing the central
character of a tribal woman who has to deal with divorce. The film depicts her struggle to come to terms with tradition
in the clan. It revolves around a tribal caste called 'Thakar'. However this is not a simple love story, this film tries
highlighting all the traditions of the Thakar caste.

This is the story of JANAI, a hardworking woman, who toils in fields and forests during the day and does embroidery
in the nights under the street lamps. She has a daughter SUSHILA and a son RAVSU. Her husband, a lazy no good
freeloader, is living off her. Always worried about her daughters future and her sons education she somehow
manages to make two ends meet. One night when she is working, a serpent from the fields appears in front of her.
She runs and wakes up the whole village. Now she has one more problem to worry about. The elders in the village ask
her to visit Lord Khandoba with offerings and pray. “Bhujang” or serpent is symbolic, a serpent in the fields, one at
home, and the various problems she is facing are like a hydra headed serpent. An emotional saga of a brave woman,

Based on a famous play by Madhusudan Kalelkar, this social film centres around Dinanath Lad, an autocratic rich
businessman. Dinanath has come up the hard way in life and, over the years, has become very rigid and authoritatrian
in his approach towards everyone.
Dinanath’s family comprises his wife and three children – Nitin, Gauri and Pramil. Nitin is forced by his father to give
up his love for music and study law instead, while Gauri is forced to give up painting and pursue medicine. Neither the
children nor their mother is allowed to argue against Dinanath’s decisions. Meanwhile, Pramil fails her Board exams
and commits suicide due to fear of her father. Still, stone-hearted Dinanath does not shed a drop of tear. Soon,
however, his life takes a dramatic turn which forces him to introspect about the way he treats his family. Does he
realize his folly? Will he change his attitude? Will he be able to earn back the love of his children?

mentally retarded son SHEKHAR. But being a true Hindu woman, she accepts him for what he is. One day during a visit
to the temple of Lord Siddheshwar, she meets a Sadhu. Upon hearing her problems, he asks her to undertake a fast of

Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. ‘Mee Chairman Boltoy’ is the story of a corrupt man who
reaches the lowest of depths in his quest for absolute power. Bhujangrao Patil is the de facto ruler of Bahaddurwadi,
a small village in Maharashtra.
Evil Bhujangrao has gradually usurped every place of authority in the village. He has himself become the chairman of
the sugar mills’ co-operative while has installed his mistress as the sarpanch after rigging the Gram Panchayat
elections. Those who protest against his crimes are killed off by him. Bhujangrao’s brother Aabasaheb is an honest
man and, when people from the village approach him for help, he decides to fight back against his brother. Thus
begins a bitter struggle between the Good and the Bad.

back to her husband for the sake of her child, when she learns that Namita is pregnant. But can Namita put aside her
self-respect and go back to Tushar. Is Tushar able to rid his mind off doubts? Does he realise his folly? Is Siddha able to

It is the story of a docile cattle-herder who transforms into a raging inferno when provoked. Bapu Biru leads a quiet
life in a small village along with his wife and children.
Although Bapu Biru comes across as a timid and unobtrusive soul to the villagers, a deep anger rages within him

difference to their individual lives, and to ‘GOONJ’ the Band, when during an interview on the Radio Mirchi, RJ Alisha
stirs their lives by asking them why they aren’t thinking of pursuing Music as their profession, instead of following the
typical career path, which most of us do!

Dinkarrao’s children and grandchildren host a party to celebrate his 70th birthday. At the party, his
granddaughter learns that Dinkarrao – who outwardly appears to be happy and so full of life – is actually
a sad and lonely man. At her behest, all the members of the family start looking for a suitable woman with
whom Dinkarrao can marry and be happy. Their search ends with Usha Mai who runs an orphanage and
shares the same as interest as Dinkarao. But will Dinkarrao agree to marry at this age? How will the
grandchildren get their grandfather to meet their would-be grandmother?

Uttarayan begins when the sun enters the northern solstice to start the second half of it journey.
Raghuveer, a widower in his fifties, has been living alone in Nagpur for years and has now come to Bombay to spend
his remaining days with his son. One day quite out of the blue, Raghuveer bumps into Kusumavati. 25 years ago,
Raghuveer was deeply in love with her, but things hadn’t quite worked out then. The two had drifted apart and now,
meeting two-and-a-half decades later, they once again pick up the thread of their old friendship. Durgi, as Kusumavati
is now called, is a divorcee and has changed a lot. The loneliness in their lives brings them closer and they begin to
meet regularly. Their friendship slowly grows into love and Raghuveer decides to marry Durgi. But that is easier said
done. Will she accept his proposal of marriage at such an old age? What would the society say? How will Raghuveer’s
son react?

Even the most ordinary woman can have her independent existence. She can lead her life with dignity and, through

Jaidev Pradhan.
Jaidev has married Shalini because his divorcee girlfriend Maya has refused his marriage proposal. After the marriage,
Shalini learns of her husband’s ongoing affair with Maya. When she confronts him, he tells her that she would have to
live with it as he does not intend to give up Maya. But Shalini finds this a very difficult compromise to make. While she
is contemplating what to do next, she happens to meet a fashion photographer who shares the same values as hers.
They become good friends, much to the dislike of Jaidev who thinks that she is turning the tables on him. What
happens next….?

KARBHARI, a village farmer was all geared up to harvest his potatoes and from the yield pay back the money he owed
to the local money lender SAHUKAR TATYA. But his bull CHITANGYA, fell into a leopard trap and broke his hind leg thus
being unable to plough the fields. Persistent efforts by Karbhari and his wife ANJANA could not resurrect Chitangya.
Karbhari decides to sell the bull to the local butcher. But he is stopped by his 7 year old younger son TINGYA, who does
not think of Chitangya as an animal. For him the bull was like his elder brother, as they were born almost at the same
time, and had shared many moments together. ‘TINGYA’ is an emotional love story between a bull and a boy. It talks
about the most dark and turbulent times in the lives of the farmers in India.

This is a story of simple villagers who achieve their goal in a city! Subhanrao Jadhav is an old man who immerses
himself in alcohol as his son sells off his land. Makrand - Subhanrao’s son, a motor mechanic, is engrossed in
inventing an engine part which may save fuel. Krishna - Makrand’s son from his first wife, intends to become a
body-builder. Sayli - Makrand’s sweet daughter from his second wife, is fond of dancing. Sumati - Makrand’s second
wife, binds all these characters together. Dhanaji – Sumati’s strange brother, is mentally ill. This family, which stays
together, drifts apart. One day, Sayli receives an invitation to participate in a dance competition in Mumbai and they
all leave from Kolhapur. The journey which is full of obstacles brings them together once again!

Movie revolves around the life of Dada Dandke (Ashok Saraf ), a crook whose business involves controlling and
opening new beer bars and casinos. The so-called gunda of the village, is fondly called “Dada” by his associates. Dada
is notoriously known for capturing polling booths and doing vasooli from people. However, a transformation comes
about in his life when he meets his long lost love, Hema (Kishori Shahane). Dada puts a marriage proposal which
Hema rejects saying that he is not the same person she had met years back. She despises his language, clothes and
way of living. Unable to face the rejection, Dada decides to change himself and win Hema's heart again. His attempts
to improve make him appoint a Marathi teacher for his language, a fashion designer to stitch international clothes
and help all the loved ones in trouble.

Gunvantrao Kagalkar aka 'Guna' (Atul Kulkarni), a poor village labourer, nurtures an obsession for Tamasha - a popular
theatrical folk art form of Maharashtra. Unforeseen circumstances lead him to lose his job as labourer and lands him
in situation where he sets up a theatre company along with his friend and mentor Pandba (Kishor Kadam). Guna is
convinced that his troupe cannot take off unless it has a female dancer. After painstaking search, Pandoba finds Naina
(Sonalee Kulkarni), the daughter of his former lover Yamunabai (Priya Berde), who is willing to dance for the company
on the condition that it has a "Nachya", a "pansy" character, a man who acts in an effeminate manner. As no one is
willing to take up the role, due to the eunuch taboo, Guna takes it upon himself to play the character. The strongly
built Guna takes up the challenge of doing the role due to his passion for the art.
However, despite being rejected by his family and discouraged by his friends, Guna continues with his stage career,
where he is joined only by Naina. It is implied that Guna and Naina marry, and that their play gathers national and
international fame. The film ends with an aged Guna, now addressed as Gunvantrao Kagalkar wins the lifetime
achievement award at a major awards ceremony.

Rita is a kaleidoscopic portrait of a life thrown out of gear by circumstances and the ensuring journey towards a stable
emotional picture. The eponymous Rita is woman who is forced to give up on her dreams at the tender age of 17, and
make a drastic compromise for the future of her family. She is forced to quit her education and give up on her personal
dreams. Without pause, she takes stock of her reality, and thrusts herself in to the life of a more mature woman.
Unable to find any support from her parents, she relies on the kindness of her boss. Vithal Salvi, who mentors her and
even supports her further education. Rita finds herself depending upon Salvi more and more and in time, falls in love
with him. But this relationship proves turbulent and she undergoes a violent nervous breakdown and is admitted to
a psychiatric ward to recuperate. While there, she decides to pour her heart out to her long lost best friend Saraswati
through a letter she had meant to write for years. Saraswati and Rita had shared a beautiful friendship as children but
lost touch due to their divergent paths in life.
Saraswati, who herself has been buried under an unrewarding marriage, finds a new purpose in reconnecting with
her crisis. They reunite after all these years and in so doing, realise once again the positive outlook they once shared
in their younger days.

donate a huge amount to the school building fund, the teacher again refuses to accept it. He tells Mahesh that he
doesn’t want his father's money, but if Mahesh really wanted to help the school, he should earn some money on his
own to donate it. He warns Mahesh that the task in hand is easier said than done and it would be greatly difficult for
him to get work without using his father's name. Mahesh takes up the task as a challenge.

Some regions in the state of Maharashtra, India are infamous for the number of suicides of farmers that they account
for….everyday. “Gabhricha Paus” or “The Damned Rain” is the story of a lone farmer and his family.
Kisna, our farmer like many others in India or for that matter, in many parts of the world is trying as hard as he has
always been. But so many things, including nature are stacked against him. Kisna’s family is trying in its own simple
way to please him and avert the inevitable. Kisna’s wife is convince of the fact that he is contemplating ending his life
and hence ropes in their 6 year old son, albeit against his wish and comprehension to be with his father all the time
and report any irregularities in his behavior.
Kisna, meanwhile is unaware or perhaps not bothered that he is being watched as a possible candidate for suicide.
Kisna is doing only what he knows best, toil hard, get a crop, pray that rains will be on his side at least this year, sell his
product and prepare for the next season. The question though, is how long can he keep trying, with little or almost no
profits to show for his efforts. This is a story about simple aspirations, the undying urge in the human race…to live and
to live against all odds. In spite of this basic instinct, these farmers still choose to end their lives and the toil keeps on
rising….

Dinkar Maruti Bhonsle represents thousands of 'Marathis' who feel they have lost their identity in the cosmopolitan
Mumbai. Dinkar feels Mumbai is in Maharashtra but there is no Maharashtra left in Mumbai. He always complains
about the lack of respect a Marathi receives in Mumbai and feels he is victimized everywhere because he is a Marathi;
little realizing that he himself has brought this situation upon himself.
In a state of sheer frustration Dinkar gets up one day cursing himself for being born a Marathi. He feels his ancestors
must have committed a heinous crime for him to be born a Marathi.
These outbursts of Dinkar reach Pratapgad and the spirit of Shivaji Maharaj is aroused. Dinkar has to now face a
seething Shivaji Maharaj, who is furious at him. Shivaji Maharaj fires Dinkar for his shallow thinking and tells him he
has to command respect, not demand it. He blames Dinkar’s thinking for the sorry state of Marathis. “Before blaming
other communities for your short comings, look within and see if you have done anything to keep the Marathi pride
intact,” he roars.
Dinkar realizes his mistake but does Shivaji Maharaja’s thought arouse him to rectify his mistakes? The film ends with
Bhonsle gladly returning the sword at the shrine of Shivaji Maharaj.

"Tukaram" was born in 1608 in Dehu, a village near Pune to a family who were devoted followers of the deity Vitthal
or Vithoba (a form of Lord Vishnu, the Preserver in the Hindu Trinity). The family belonged to the Kunbi caste, they
were moneylenders and traders by profession.
'Tukaram' had a very normal childhood. He was fascinated with Lord Vitthal who he claimed as his dear friend. He was
a very innocent and generous kid and would freely park with his toys or personal belongings with his friends. As he
grews up he takes up the family responsibility as his elder brother is not interested in the material world and is drawn
completely towards spiritual pursuits. When his first wife 'Rakhma' is unable to bear a child, he bows to his family's
wishes and marries 'Aavli'. Tuka tries to become a good son and husband but the arrival of a major famine destroys this
beautiful picture. He loses both his parents, his sister-in-law (brother's wife) dies and his elder brother 'Savji' abandons
home. His first wife and son die too; during this hopeless atmosphere of a terrible three-year-long famine, 'Tukaram'
realizes that the perennial treasure of God's grace is far more valuable than ephemeral worldly riches and he shifts his
focus to divine worship. He does not choose to quit his responsibilities though and follow a solitary path.
Instead, he feels it is more important to try and reduce the sorrows of the people around him. For him, being 'a good
human being' is as vital as being a good son, friend or husband.

Before breathing his last he blurts out the number to one of the don's associates but is unable to give any more
details. The don, left with a mere number, has no clue of what the number stands for.

Industrialization has reached each and every small village in India and the villages here are bearing the brunt of

In the rural areas of Maharashtra lies a peaceful village called Mangrul. One day Keshav (Girish Kulkarni), a village
youth, sees lord Dattatrey (Datta) in his dreams while taking a nap under a tree. He makes a hue and cry in the village
saying God made an appearance for him. Anna (Dilip Prabhavalkar), most respected figure of Mangrul, advises him
against announcing such personal matter as it’s a question of faith. However, it is too late as a journalist (Kishor
Kadam) sensationalizes the news about Lord Dattatrey making an appearance in Mangrul. There is now a demand for
a Dattatrey temple. Bhau (Nana Patekar), a political activist, doesn’t approve it as he wants the funds to be used for
better purposes but he seems helpless. The temple is built and the village becomes a holy place. Mangrul goes
through a 360 degree change due to commercialization but nobody is complaining except Anna. Soon, blinded by
the commercial progress, God is forgotten.
Every village has a right to progress commercially but how ethical it is to use a temple and its God to achieve it? The
question is raised.

‘Aptegaon’ a progressive village in Maharashtra was suddenly in news thanks to its impending Special Economic Zone
or SEZ status. As a result, Land prices were to zoom, but the villagers were still unaware of their village’s impending
SEZ status. Industry Minister Madhusudan Patil, the MLA from Aptegaon, a clean imaged, but highly corrupt politician
controlled Aptegaon Village through his aide Kulkarni, who loaned huge sums to farmers. All farmers were thus at his
mercy, and most of them had no other choice but to sell him their land. But the piece of land, Madhu was after, was a
7 acre plot adjoining the river, which belonged to a war hero Gangadhar. Madhusudan had already pre-sold this land
at a fancy price to an industrialist Veer Dhawal. School teacher, Milind gets wind of the SEZ status and cautions the
villagers, resulting in him being killed by Madhusudan’s brother Bhasker. Bhasker, Madhusudan & Kulkarni run riot &
as a result Gangadhar too loses his life. Was it murder or suicide..? Gangadhar’s son Vithoba is sure its murder, but all
the evidence available points towards suicide, which does not find the support amongst the villagers. Vithoba’s last
option is to turn to his cousin Tukaram who belongs to the underworld in Mumbai, controlled by the goon Bababhai.
Tukaram is furious on knowing about his uncle Gangadhar’s killing leaves for Aptegaon with his accomplices Alex,
West Indies, Salim, Kanfatya, & their chaiwala Panikam. On reaching there they realize they are fighting a bigger

She also starts troubling Sakhu. One day, Sakhu's husband falls ill and Sakhu defies her mother-in-law's order and
comforts her husband rather than doing her prescribed work. Sakhu's mother-in-law tells her son that he has to
choose between his mother and her; he chooses his mother. A sad Sakhu sees a group of Vitthala devotees doing
Naam-Kirtan. She joins the group and starts doing Naam-Kirtan. Her husband's sister finds her and tells her mother
about that. The mother-in-law arrives and drags her to her home and ties her into a pole. Sakhu starts crying and
worships Vitthala and after some times things take a different turn. The movie ends with two Sakhus. People get
dumbfounded by seeing two Sakhus and start thinking that she is a ghost. The movie ends by clearing everyone's
doubts.

Jagdale Wadi is a small village with a populace of not more than 4000 to 5000 people. The village Patil lived with his
young daughter Harini in the wadi. For the sixth time, Shreepati comes back from jail with his criminal friend Kaluram.
Kaluram’s sister Tani is a young widow who works at wrestler Hanma’s house. Hanma’s mother, Sarsabai trusts her
implicitly. When Shreepati begins to trouble Tani, Sarsabai lets her live in the house. Angry, Shreepati tries to defame
Tani, by spreading false rumours of her relationship with the wrestler. Meanwhile, Patil is keen on getting Harini
married to Hanma. When Shreepati continues troubling Tani, Sarsabai makes up her mind to get Tani married to her
son. At one of the wrestling competition held outside his village, Hanma loses everything including his house and all
his wealth. He vows never to go back to his village unless he wins a match and restore all that his family has lost on his
account. He asks his mother to lend him five thousand rupees to participate in another competition. Having lost
everything, Sarsabai pleads Patil to lend her the money to save her son’s reputation. He refuses to comply with her
request. Once again Shreepati plays one of his dirty tricks by laying a condition that if Tani leaves Hanma then he will
arrange for the required sum. Tani goes to Patil and requests him to give the money and promises to leave Hanma and
the village forever. Patil agrees happily hoping that Hanma will now marry his daughter.
A jubilant Hanma wins the competition and comes back home to meet his mother and Tani. But...

'Nakshatranche Dene’ is basically a tribute to some of the great artists in Marathi and their
contribution to arts, literature and culture. They are those creative geniuses who have
nurtured our good taste for arts and enriched our minds, for decades together.
The programme was conceptualized by Shrirang Godbole and executed for Zee T.V. by
‘Indian Magic Eye’. It soon became the talk of the town and received a great fan-following
simply for its rich content, the prestigious presence of the artists and its high production
quality. It kept people looking forward to the next presentation.
‘Nakshatranche Dene’ salutes the great singers like Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Pt. Kumar
Gandharva, Vasantrav Deshpande, Jeetendra Abhisheki and many more. There were some
of the bright stars on the horizon of Marathi poetry, like Kusumagraj, Vinda Karandikar,
Mangesh Padgavkar, Shanta Shelke, B.B. Borkar, Grace, N.D. Mahanor, Arati Prabhu and
others. Marathi film-world has stalwarts to boast about, like Bhalaji Pendharkar, P. L.
Deshpande, G.D. Madgulkar, who are very much part of this list.
Marathi light-music has a special place in Marathi hearts. The great work of composers like
Sudheer Phadake, Shreenivas Khale, Jitendra Abhisheki is presented in this programme
with full zest and authenticity.
Those who participated in the stage-presentations are big names today, in their own right.
To mention a few of them is suffice. Artists like Sachin Khedekar, Sandeep Kulkarni, Dileep
Prabhavalkar, Atul Kulkarni, Mrinal Kulkarni, Neena Kulkarni, Subodh Bhave, Sonali

DRAMAS
One of Vijay Tendulkar’s most controversial plays, Sakharam Binder was first staged in 1974. It tells the story of the
book-binder Sakharam who takes home a series of women after they have been thrown out of their homes by their
respective husbands.
In return for providing shelter, Sakharam exploits the women by getting them to perform household tasks and
occasionally, for sexual favours. The play opens with the seventh woman Laxmi who is docile and timid by nature.
After exploiting her for a few days, Sakharam throws her out and brings the next woman Champa who is flamboyant
and head-strong. Things get complicated after a few days when Laxmi returns. What follows is a succession of
unexpected events which culminate into a dramatic end.

YASHODHA BORKAR, a bank employee is married to ANAND BORKAR, a singer cum music director who unfortunately

study all the time sacrificing everything else. GUNDAPPA, the son of MR&MRS. HEGDE, their new neighbours, who is
also studying in the same class, always manages to score more marks even after indulging in sports etc. much to the
annoyance of Yashodha. A bittersweet comedy which takes a close look at todays education system where new laws
are made every year adding to the already existing woes of the students.

Hee Shreenchi Ichchha depicts the life and times of Madhavrao Peshwa who was the prime minister of Pune between
1761-1772.
Having lost his father at the tender of age of 1, Madhavrao grew up to be a shrewd political leader and champion of
justice. However, he was constantly faced with political intrigues and conspiracies of his father’s brother,
Raghunathrao. At one point, even his maternal uncle joined hands with the Maratha’s arch-rival, the Nizam. But when
Madhavrao punished him for treason, his own mother vowed that she would never look at Madhavrao’s face again. At
the young age of 27, Madhavrao died after a short illness, yearning to see his mother’s face. He is still remembered as
one of the greatest peshwas despite dying so young.

ANIL PRADHAN a Hindu is in love with RUKHSANA SAAHIL a Muslim. Both had met during a play of a common friend,
who played cupid and thus got the both of them married, overcoming a ll hurdles created by family and relatives in

blowing up into major issues where egos and alter egos started surfacing, leading to uncompromising situations. A

politicians on people of his clan. His own father loses his eyesight when he refuses to sell off his land to one such
leader. Matter reaches head when a dalit girl is raped by the Sarpanch of the village. The dalits must now unite and
retaliate.

The play is political and social satire on meddle-class society’s hypocrisy.
It is set as a play-within-a-play, where a travelling amateur theatre group, makes an unscheduled stop at a village.
There to pass time the cast members stage a mock trial, of a fellow cast member, Miss Leela Benare, who is unmarried,
sexually exploited and had earlier aborted a child to keep her honour.
During the course of the play, she is ‘charged’ of child abortion (Broon Hatya), and as the charges get more vicious and
personal, she can’t take them anymore, as she is reminded of her predicament.
Finally she breaks down, revealing the true story behind it all, and also the hegemony and hypocrisy of male cast
members comes into the light, who like their counterpart in the society are not blameless themselves, while they still
find it easy to point fingers at a woman’s character.
