FROM THE
Owner
From humble road-side
beginnings to a beautiful
storefront…in fifty years,
a lot can change.
I
t’s incredible to think of being in business for fifty years!
There were huge struggles over the years - some ending
with disappointment and many ending with success - to
get the business to where it is today.
I think the biggest hurdle in the past fifty years was the “passing
of the torch” from the founders, Mom & Dad, to myself, the 2nd
generation. There are a lot of technical details about estate
planning & succession planning, which is essential in a smooth
transition. Although they are essential, there is something else
that is more critical than that. This “something” is the key to
treating customers & keeping them coming back year after
year.
This “something” is being GOOD to each other, no matter
what the relationship is – family, customer, co-worker, boss or
employee. It sounds really easy to do, but yet seems to be
missed in a lot of our society today.
Henry Sr. & Lena set a high standard as far as being good
people. They were good to their employees, good to their
customers and good to their family. This was standard
operating procedure for Henry & Lena - being fair, honest,
genuine, patient…and basically GOOD to other people. Those
qualities made them good candidates for passing on the
business to another generation successfully. And modelling
those qualities gave myself & my staff the tools to successfully
continue the business to get us to this 50-year milestone.
I hope that you find today that we are GOOD to you, our
customers. You have supported us, grown your gardens with
us and seen all the changes & developments over the years.
Thank you for coming to us & trusting us when you have
questions, thank you for being our friends and thank you for
embracing us as part of this amazing community in which we
live.

Cooking With Fresh Herbs
U
tilizing the flavor of fresh herbs
is the difference between a
mediocre meal and a great one.
Mastering where, when and how takes
some practice, but once you get the hang
of it, herbs are magic. Here’s just a few
examples of what you can do with fresh
herbs to add that depth and extra punch
to your next meal. Basil is a standard in
Italian and Thai cuisines, generally used
fresh and always added near the end if
cooked at all. Cilantro is one of the most
widely used herbs across world cuisines;
Indian, Mexican, Thai, and Vietnamese
to name a few; this is also generally used
fresh. Rosemary use often appears
in French, Italian and Mediterranean
cooking, its hardy nature requires longer
cooking times. Thyme is imperative in
French cooking and is utilized throughout
many other cuisines, for most applications
the leaves are separated for cooking but
the stems can infuse your stocks and
soup with depth. Mint has endless uses
across numerous cuisines and can be
cooked, used fresh, and most importantly
you need to muddle it into the Cuban
Mojito, for the chef always needs a
libation whilst cooking up a storm!
Herbs
F
rom pungent aroma of basil & oregano to the beautiful
fragrance of lavender….from the many uses of lemon
verbena to the tasty varieties of mint...Eising’s has it all
covered. There are so many herbs to choose from, so many
different flavours to try...the combinations are endless. Visit our
herb section today & start your journey into flavours yet unknown!

NEW INTRODUCTIONS FOR 2016
Looking forward
to our gardens
As we are now enjoying some time off from the rigors and
routines of maintaining our landscapes, your local garden
centres are busy preparing for the upcoming gardening season.
With so many new introductions available to choose from
this season, the one “must- have” in your new or renovated
garden is the Little Lime Hydrangea, which has been selected
as the 2016 Landscape Plant of the Year. Compared to its
more famous sibling, the Limelight, this hardy hydrangea may
seem petite but it packs a visual punch. In summer, lime green
flowers open on strong blooms. As it ages, rich pink coloring
emerges to prolong the show through the fall season. This
selection is ideal for residential landscapes as a hedge and also
makes a bold statement as a mass planting. This hydrangea
reaches 3 to 5’ tall and blooms on new wood, so a quick trim
in late winter or early spring will encourage fresh growth and an
abundance of buds.
Indian Warrior Grass is a perennial upright clumping grass
(Andropogon) reaching 5-6’. The green foliage takes on purple
tones in summer before turning completely purple with red
highlights for a spectacular fall show.
Serious Black Clematis
The Radiance Autumn Fern (Dryopteris) is a beautiful addition
to the shade garden. This plant is a hardy evergreen that is
drought-resistant with a slowly spreading habit. Now the best
part is the spring foliage. Each long, elegant frond unfurls in
dazzling shades of red and rose for many weeks, until the
warm weather of summer sets in and turns them green.
Another interesting introduction is the Serious Black Clematis.
This is a bush as opposed to the customary vine, which
posseses smoky purple foliage in spring that matures to an
olive green and tiny, fragrant white flowers early summer.
And of course, we’ll have to include a new novelty vegetable
which is the latest craze among the young foodies, called
Kalettes®. This is a brand-new vegetable which looks a little
like a tiny cabbage with green frilly leaves and streaks of purple.
Kalettes get their great taste by combining the best flavors from
brussels sprouts and kale, resulting in a fresh fusion of sweet
and nutty.

Erie Beach
Hotel
Congratulates
Eising Garden Centre for 50 years
of operating in this community…
From your friends at the Erie Beach.
Eising’s has long been the supplier
of plants for our famed gardens in
Port Dover. Every year when we plan
the gardens, we scour the industry
catalogues for new & exciting products,
which Eising’s always manages to find for
us! Working with other local businesses…
supporting each other’s businesses…
that’s what it means to be a community.
We are excited to be celebrating 70 years of being a business supported
by this community this year and so we understand what it takes to
achieve a landmark milestone such as this.
“The more things change, the more
things stay the same.” A truer statement
could not be found to describe us here
at the Erie Beach. While everything else
changes, we provide a landmark
with unparalleled tradition for the
community and for our customers.
We believe that Eising’s has shown the
same fortitude through 50 years…
a longstanding tradition.
