REPORT
2015
2014-2015
“We are changing
lives…one day at
a time…one patient
at a time.”
Eliminating Health Care Disparities—One Patient at a Time
There’s an old story that goes:
A young girl is walking down the beach and notices that the tide has gone out, leaving
thousands of starfish behind to die. In her childhood innocence, she begins rescuing starfish
one by one by throwing them back into the sea. A man walking by asks, “What are you
doing? You can’t possibly make a difference to all these starfish. Thousands will die despite
your effort.” The girl leans over, picks up a starfish and lobs it to safety, saying, “Well, sir,
looks like I made a difference to that one!”
This reminds me of the work we do to eliminate disparities in health care access. There
are more than 10 million people in Los Angeles County and 3 million in Orange County,
with nearly 18 percent and 10 percent, respectively, living below the poverty line. These
percentages—in these areas we serve—are higher than in all of California. Yet we are making
a difference. We have created more access to health care through our Affordable Care Act
efforts and by expanding to new communities.
We are changing lives…one day at a time…one patient at a time.
In this year’s report, we share stories of patients whose lives we have changed. While they
are just the beginning, we consider it an honor and an opportunity, and we are up for the
challenge that still lies ahead.

SUGEID
SUGEID | 38 YEARS OLD | DEPRESSION
Feelings of sadness, difficulty eating and sleeping, and fatigue: In the
U.S., about 15 million people experience these symptoms of depression
every year, and the majority are women. In fact, women are twice as
likely to develop clinical depression than men, with Latinas at increased
risk. Unfortunately, nearly two-thirds never get help because of poverty
and the social stigma surrounding mental illness.
I
“I didn’t think it was depression; I thought I was sick,” says Sugeid about her first
visit two years ago to AltaMed’s Commerce clinic, where her husband is also a
patient. She had been experiencing symptoms of fatigue and numbness down the
right side of her body, from her head through her arm. Her AltaMed doctor ran
bloodwork and a number of other tests, checking everything from her glucose to
her blood pressure. Then the doctor asked, “Do you feel angry or sad?”
As she sat and thought about it, she knew she had trauma in her past that she
was still trying to work through. She also always felt very nervous and shy and
was constantly fearful that something would go wrong or that one of her four
children, ages 3, 5, 12, and 17, would be hurt.
REDISCOVERING SELF
With a diagnosis of depression, Sugeid could receive the help she needed from
AltaMed’s Commerce clinic staff in collaboration with the Behavioral Health
Services team. She began taking medication, which has been adjusted along
the way to meet her needs, and regularly seeing a psychologist to talk through
her issues.
“It has changed my life,” says Sugeid, “and I want other people to know they
can change their lives, too, if they just communicate. We live with so many
stresses and problems, and we think it’s our health, but it’s not; it’s our brain.
People can be happy when they get help.”
“Thank you, AltaMed!” she adds. “I love my doctor and have since changed
my husband to her, too. I also love AltaMed because everyone cares.”

REACHING BEYOND
I
“I wanted to leave my home so that I wasn’t home alone so much,” Frank
says about his decision to get involved in AltaMed’s PACE program, two days
a week starting in 2013. While he is the father of 15 kids—seven boys and
eight girls—and about 40 grandkids (“I’ve hardly slept having so many kids,”
he jokes), he was feeling isolated and alone.
Every Tuesday and Wednesday, Frank travels by bus to the AltaMed PACE
site in South Los Angeles, where he’s greeted by staff and patients who know
and love him.
“There’s not much I don’t like about this place; I love the food they serve
and how nice everyone talks to you,” he says. “I like the exercise and the
help I get since I can’t do everything on my own, and I like to play games to
exercise my mind,” he says. “I just like having fun and being around people.”
While at AltaMed, this former lumberjack, who retired back in 1984, can do
everything from enjoy meals, to participate in games and activities, to see
his doctor for regular check-ups. “My foot has a little swelling from gout,”
shares Frank about his health concerns now that he’s in his 90s, “but my
heart is almost as good as a 40-year-old heart!”
“I meet a lot of people,” Frank adds. “I told someone the other day at church
how AltaMed treats me and how they respond to me. It’s beautiful! I don’t
have to be lonesome anymore, and I can have fun.”

FRANK | 93 YEARS OLD | ISOLATION & LONELINESS
Nearly 90 percent of seniors—people over the age of 65—want to remain
at home for as long as possible. But while there are benefits to a senior’s
well-being from staying at home and in a familiar community, as people
age and become less mobile and active, feelings of social isolation and
loneliness can have serious health impacts and even shorten a person’s life.

ANGELICA
ANGELICA | 39 YEARS OLD | CANCER
The statistics are staggering: 43 percent of males and 37 percent of
females are at risk of developing cancer in their lifetime. Now consider
one of the most prevalent forms: breast cancer. This year alone in the
U.S., there will be an estimated 231,840 women diagnosed and 42,290
women who die from it. The key to survival is regular screening and early
detection.
“I have scars from the
cancer, but I am still
‘Angie’ and still smiling.”
I
“I remember when the doctor told me I had breast cancer like it was yesterday. I was wearing
blue pants, a white shirt, and gold sandals. My legs were shaking. Everyone was talking, and
I felt like I was watching a movie,” shares Angelica, who in 2013—at a follow-up oncology
appointment at AltaMed’s Huntington Beach clinic for her younger sister, Sonia, who has
now beat cancer three times—was asked by the doctor if she had ever been screened.
Angelica had not been screened before, because she was uninsured. But when AltaMed
helped make it possible, it was discovered that Angelica was positive for a BRCA2 gene
mutation that increased her risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers. When further
screened through a mammogram and biopsy, Angelica’s doctor found stage 0-1 cancer.
This mom of a son who was just 4 years old at the time opted for a double mastectomy to
remove both breasts, and a hysterectomy to remove her uterus, to drastically reduce her
chances of the cancer reocurring. “I just kept thinking about my mom and my son,” she
says. “For my mom, this was the second time one of her daughters was diagnosed with
breast cancer.”
While the mastectomy was hard because of the physical pain, the hysterectomy was very
emotional. Angelica had to come to terms with the fact that she couldn’t carry another
child, and the surgery triggered her body into menopause.
Through it all, however, she had her sister by her side. Angelica and Sonia had their
mastectomy surgeries on the same day. They even recovered together under the same roof.
“Thank you for all the help I received, for the information you shared with me and the Latino
community, and for speaking Spanish; that made a huge difference,” says Angelica, who is
now cancer-free. “I have scars from the cancer, but I am still ‘Angie’ and still smiling.”

“We’re not finding out the sex of our baby; we want it to be a surprise,” say
first-time parents Sonia and Brandon, who had two names picked out—one
for if their baby was a boy (it was, and they named him Lawrence!), and one
for if it was a girl. Sonia is a patient at AltaMed’s Huntington Beach facility
where she has been coming for the past 10 years since gaining insurance
coverage. Her mom, brother, three younger sisters, and aunt are also patients
at this facility.
More recently, though, Sonia and Brandon found themselves uninsured as
Brandon worked to finish his college degree. However, AltaMed was able
to help Sonia sign up for the care she needed throughout her pregnancy
and delivery since early and regular prenatal care is one of the best ways to
promote a healthy pregnancy and birth.
At 39 weeks pregnant with her due date just a day away, Sonia could say
that all in all, it had been an ideal first pregnancy. She felt good and had very
few concerns or complications.
“It’s been really good coming to AltaMed,” she says. “The doctors and staff
helped us out and answered all our questions—and we had a lot since this
was our first pregnancy!” They helped Sonia understand what to eat and
how to exercise during her pregnancy, and they thoroughly checked for a
liver condition that makes your whole body itch when she was experiencing
symptoms. “Turns out, it was just ‘pregnancy,’” she laughs.
“Overall, I’m pretty healthy, so I haven’t had to see the doctor often; just for
regular check-ups,” Sonia adds. “But AltaMed has been amazing.”

SONIA
SONIA | 35 YEARS OLD | PREGNANCY
Babies are developing and growing at every stage of pregnancy. Prenatal
care is extremely important because it reduces the risk of pregnancyrelated complications, such as anemia, preterm birth, preeclampsia,
complications of diabetes, or poor growth of the baby in utero. Babies born
to mothers who received no prenatal care are three times more likely to be
born at low birth weight.
