Del Piero Down Under
Sydney FC and Alessandro Del
Piero’s season may have ended
before
the
Finals
series
commenced, but it has been a
successful campaign nonetheless
for
the
Juventus
legend.
The Roar were three goals to the
good by the time Del Piero netted
a late penalty, which proved little
more than a consolation. Sydney
finished seventh, missing the
Finals by virtue of goal difference.
The Sky Blues went into the final
match of the minor round still a
chance to book their spot in the
top six. Sydney needed to defeat
Brisbane away, something they
failed to do on their previous
visit to Suncorp Stadium.
Del Piero was the clear standout
player throughout the term and
claimed the 2012-13 Sydney FC
Player of the Year award. He swept
the club awards by also taking
the Golden Boot prize - 14 goals and
the
Sydney
FC
Members Award.
Del Piero polled 132 votes in the
main accolade, defeating Rhyan
Grant (119) and Terry Antonis (67).
Unfortunately, he was unable
to capture the Johnny Warren
Medal for best player in the
A-League. Del Piero finished in
second place behind Melbourne
Victory’s Marco Rojas, 908 votes
to 449.

A Letter From The President
Torino V Juventus - Classic Match Review
Good evening fellow Juventini,
Maresca’s Mole moment
Ahead of the latest edition of the Derby della Mole, Luca Cetta
rewinds to 2001-02 and to a celebration etched in derby
notoriety.
Welcome to another official Juventus Club DOC Adelaide ‘Alessandro Del Piero’ event, for what could potentially be an historic Turin
Derby encounter.
Thanks to all who supported our last two events, the match against Inter on March 30th and the first leg of the Bayern Munich Champions League tie four days later. The former was a great evening and even better result, while the latter ended in a disappointing
manner. However, the support from Juve fans in Adelaide was exceptional. The combined events saw over 130 people in attendance
and we thank you all for supporting the club.
We in the committee have been busy on a number of fronts. The Club DOC packs are now in our possession and available to pick up if
you haven’t done so already. Meanwhile, we’re in the midst of organising events for the end of this season and the off-season, while
also preparing for 2013-14.
The Derby della Mole has enjoyed a rich history since it was first contested in 1907. Both Turin clubs have celebrated memorable
victories in the more than 100 years of the Derby. Juventus have dominated recently, but you can never underestimate the Granata.
Should other results go our way, a win tonight means we can celebrate back-to-back Scudetti. If not, we will be mighty close and can
look forward to lifting the trophy in the near future. It would be a fantastic achievement considering where the club was before
Antonio Conte’s arrival.
Fino alla Fine Forza Juventus!
Rocky Mastrullo
Vice-President
Juventus Club DOC Adelaide ‘Alessandro Del Piero’
The gesture has not been forgotten by both sides of the Turin
divide. That in itself proves how rousing it was. To one side, so
daring. To the other an act of disrepute. A Derby can fuel
passions like no other match and it’s not just fans who feel
this, but the players too. While he won’t be remembered in the
pantheon of Bianconeri greats alongside Giampiero
Boniperti, Gaetano Scirea and Alessandro Del Piero, Enzo
Maresca has earned a special place in Juventini hearts thanks
to a last-minute Derby goal and provoking celebration.
Juventus and Torino have each enjoyed periods of domination over the years. Juventus in the early 1930s. ‘Il Grande
Torino’ in the 1940s. Juve were kings of the city for many years
after, yet Torino were Scudetto contenders throughout the
1970s. Financial strife in the mid-1990s meant a promising
team was broken up and they floundered between Serie A
and B. In 2001-02, Toro were newly promoted. They recovered
from three goals down to draw the first Derby and proved
a solid mid-table outfit.
He celebrated by imitating a bull - Torino’s symbol - charging
at a red flag. With only 10 minutes remaining, Riccardo
Maspero found Cristiano Lucarelli. His low cross was met by
the onrushing Benoit Cauet, who gave Torino the advantage
with a shot from six yards too powerful for Buffon.
Juve looked down and out. Thuram brought the ball forward
in the 89th minute. His cross was hit to the edge of the penalty
area, where a host of players were camped. Substitute
Maresca - who had never scored for Juve - rose highest to
meet Thuram’s centre. And from 18 yards the 22-year-old
generated enough power and accuracy to beat Bucci. An
unforgettable goal, topped only by the celebration. Maresca
imitated Ferrante and displayed his ‘bull horns’. Juve seized a
precious 2-2 draw. Maresca had Granata fans fuming. They
bayed for blood as the Bianconeri faithful celebrated a crucial
goal. The celebration lives on in Mole infamy.
Juve dropped to third but eventually claimed the Scudetto
during a remarkable final round contested on May 5th.
Maresca would play just one more season for Juventus - in
2003-04 - scoring three goals. None were as memorable
as that last-minute Derby equaliser.
Marcello Lippi returned to the Juve bench at the start of the
campaign. Following two second-placed finishes his job was
to go one better. Zinedine Zidane was gone, but in came
Gianluigi Buffon, Lilian Thuram and Pavel Nedved. Standing in
Juve’s way were Roma and Inter. The three clubs engaged in
an epic Scudetto battle not settled until the final round of
the season.
The second Derby took place on February 24th. Juve were
first. Inter and Roma had already defeated Udinese and
Perugia respectively as the Turin clubs took the field on
Sunday evening. In the 10th minute Edgar Davids whipped in
a cross for David Trezeguet. Slack marking meant the Frenchman had time to place his header past goalkeeper Luca Bucci.

Just past the hour mark the Bianconeri twice failed to clear a
lofted pass hit into the penalty area, helping the ball to Marco
Ferrante at the back post. The Toro striker smacked the
ball past Buffon to equal proceedings.
