Fencing - Rotech Products
The Little Black Book of
Fencing
To build a brand of rural hardware that is
recognised by the industry Australia wide
for it’s: quality, innovation, reliability, integrity and
affordability.
Fencing - Now that’s got you on the edge of your seat...
You don’t have to look too far and you’ll find plenty of fences with
loose and sagging wire. Which is surprising considering the critical
part they play in the success of any livestock operation.
So do you have a fence that features loose and sagging wire?
Cast your eye along the fence line to the end or corner post, is it
tilting precariously or miraculously rising out of the ground?
Corner, end and inline brace assemblies are without doubt the
foundation of a good fence. The failure of one such assembly
will result in the failure of the whole fence line. But fencing, it’s
such a daunting job! Well yes it can be, but not with STAYTIGHT.

TIMBER POST KITS
The STAYTIGHT® timber kits are ideal for replacing or fixing traditional timber post
end assemblies. If the original timber stay has failed these kits are a quick and
easy option to get you operational again. While steel stays are a lot lighter than their
timber counterparts, they’re as strong if not stronger. There‘s no need to bust your
back lugging around heavy timber stays.

FITTING KITS
Simple!
To achieve professional results doesn’t normally mean minimal effort, however with the
STAYTIGHT Fitting Kit system that’s exactly what you get. There is no need for a welder
or even a drill, all that’s required is 5 minutes and a shifter...Yes, there are more civilised
tools that will make the job even easier, however a shifter will do the job just fine.
Versatile!
®
Fitting Kits
So, you already have your own posts and stays?
Then this is the kit for you...
The fitting kit provides you with all the advantages of the unique STAYTIGHT
round post system, but gives you the option to supply your own pipe. This makes the system
more economical to deliver and gives you more flexibility. All you need to do is let us
know what pipe you have (see ‘TechSpecs’) and how many you want and we’ll sort the rest.
All STAYTIGHT footplates measure
400 x 300mm. Not to big, not to small,
not to heavy, not to light...just right!
The TWIST-TIGHT clamp and the tension cable are both adjustable giving you
complete control. The stay can be adjusted to suit any angle or height. The lean on the
strainer post/strain on the wire can also be adjusted at anytime by adjusting the
tension cable...this is all possible with just a shifter! By now you will have realised that
this amount of adjustment is just not possible with other systems, especially if it has
been welded, then there is no adjustment. Posts move over time, some areas are worse
than others (depending on the make-up of the soil). With the STAYTIGHT system, if
the post does move, adjustments can be made with the tension cable to rectify the
problem.

FENCING FACTS
13 Things you Need to Know!
So, grab a cuppa and have a read. You may be surprised!
Psssst, it‘s not rocket science...
Q1 - Why do fences fail?
The 3 main reasons that can cause a fence to fail are: structural failure, soil movement
and post pullout. Structural failure can occur if inferior materials have been used or
from improper design. Some soil doesn‘t have the strength to suppoprt the load of the
fence, this can often be rectified by installing longer posts. If a post pulls out it is most
likely due to the post not being set deep enough and/or the stay not being long enough.
The correct set depth and the correct length stay will prevent the post pulling out.
Time is! So often materials get priced up and the option chosen is the one with the smallest
initial outlay (using timber or welding steel pipe up). ‘Initial’ - Yes, because at the end of the
job what seemed slightly more expensive (Staytight) all of a sudden becomes the better
option. Why? Because it takes less than ¼ of the time to install! That‘s a huge cost saving!
Q3 - Why do strainer posts move?
There is a lot expected from a strainer post. The main problem is that the load applied
to the post by the weight of the fence is above ground level. Whereas the resistence
(soil) that holds the post is below ground level. The wire pulling on the post creates a
force that tries to lift the post out of the ground (which is the most common form of
failure). When a vertical and horizontal force are combined (from the pull of the wire) it can
rotate the post up and out of the ground. This can be prevented by setting the posts
deeper, using correct length stays and/or by using ground pin anchors on the strainer
post. A correctly installed diagonal stay assembly cancels these forces out.
Q4 - How important is the diameter of the strainer?
The short answer...it isn‘t important (within reason)! A commonly held belief is that the
greater the diameter of the post the greater hold it will have in the ground. This isn‘t
entirely true. Depth and the way it is installed are far more important.
Q5 - What‘s the best way to install a strainer?
16
Driving a strainer in is the superior way, as it causes the least disturbance to the soil around
it (which does have the job of supporting the post and thus the entire fenceline). Digging
a hole, dropping a large diameter timber strainer into it and then backfilling it is a lot of
Freecall: 1800 004 940
Q6 - Why use a diagonal steel stay assembly?
Why? Well because they‘re the easiest, quickest and one of the strongest assemblies
you can install. They‘re also fully adjustable, meaning you can’t really get it wrong.
Q7 - Where should I install an assembly?
The requirement for a end assembly is normally dictated by a change in direction,
topography or for a gateway.
Q8 - What’s the most important part of an assembly?
Strainer posts are! If these fail then the whole fence will fail. The strainer post is subject
to vertical and horizontal forces so it critical that they are installed correctly. The
deeper the post is set the greater it‘s load capacity. A post set at 1m (42“) has about
double the capacity of one set at 750mm (30“).
Q9 - What length should my stay be?
The stay plays a critical part in the holding power of the assembly. As a general rule of
thumb your stay should be at least 2½ times the height of your fence. So if your fence is
1.2m (48“) high, then your stay needs to be at least 3m (10’) long. 1.2m x 2½ = 3m (10’).
FENCING FACTS
FENCING FACTS
Q2 - What‘s the biggest oversight when fencing?
work for no real gain. A steel strainer (80NB or 100NB) driven in will out perform a much larger
timber post that has been dug and then tampered in. Driven posts have a greater
holding capacity and are far less effected by vertical and horizontal movement.
Q10 - How high should my stay be?
¾ of the way up the post from ground level. If your post is 1.2m (48“) above gorund level then
the stays best position would be at 900mm (36“). 1.2(m) x .75 (¾) = .9m (900mm). If the stay
angle is too flat or too steep then the stay can act like a fulcrum and increase the vertical
movement of the post - not something you want!
Q11 - Why do I need adjustment?
With adjustment you can respond to changes in the fence line before they become a
problem. Within 24 hours of a fence being erected it starts losing tension and continues
to do so over it‘s lifespan. With the amount of adjustment offered in the STAYTIGHT
assemblies via the tension cable and the post and stay connectors you can adjust the
assembly as needed. This is not possible with traditional timber assemblies, a steel
assembly that has been welded or any assembly that has it’s stay just buried in the
ground. A fence line that is cared for will give years of service, so it makes sence for
you to have control of it rather than letting nature dictate it completely.
www.staytight.com.au
17
Q12 - Do I need a tension cable?
Yes, it‘s an extremely important part of the assembly. All the tension on a fence is
directed down the stay to the footplate. The tension cable transfers that force
back to the base of the strainer post, where it‘s needed the most. The force that‘s
transferred back to the base of the post significantly reduces the chance of
it lifting out of the ground. Transferring this force back to the post also greatly
reduces the weight on the footplate, meaning it‘s very unlikely to sink.
Q13 - Why use a “floating” footplate?
FENCING FACTS
With a diagonal stay fence assembly the only thing that should be fixed
permanently is the strainer post. Everything else should be allowed to move with the
changing conditions that the fence is put under. It‘s a “floating” footplate because
it stays on top of the ground - unpinned. Pinning the footplate down, burying it or even
restricting it‘s movement defeats the purpose of a diagonal stay assembly because
it can no longer transfer the load back to the base of the post. Instead the weight
of the fence will be where the stay is attached to the post and on the footplate
itself...exactly where you don‘t want it. A stay just set into the ground (even with a
backing plate) will fail over time, causing the whole fence to fail. A footplate doesn‘t
require any digging to install either, so it‘s a real time saver!
What‘s being said about our products:
“I love using Rotech products. They make my job so much easier”
- Brendan, Bathurst NSW.
“I was a first timer to rural fencing and when I came across your products at the
local rural supplies I had to give it a go. I have to admit your products are the
easiest to use and the range of bolt-on (non welding) items make it easy when power
is not available. Pricing is also competitive with the Twist-Tight being the cheapest
option for non-welding stay assemblies. After using this product, I don’t think I could
go back to welding. Saves me time and effort”
- Anthony, Murrumbateman NSW.
“I recently bought some bolt-on hinge kits. Very happy. they are easy to use and
assemble”
- Simon
“We made the switch from timber to steel and then to Staytight. Fencing wise it’s
the best thing we have ever done. We love how quick they go together and
how much more we get done in a day. Will defiantly be using it again.”
- Richard, Armidale NSW
