A Message From Your
PRIDE Board of Directors and
the Executive Council
Dear Bellarmine Friends,
On behalf of the PRIDE Board of Directors and the
Executive Council, welcome to the 2015 PRIDE
Auction “ARTS ON THE HILL.” This evening we
have the opportunity to celebrate the many gifts
and talents of our students, staff, and Bellarmine
community.
Thank you to the many Bellarmine Business
Partners, PRIDE Auction sponsors, and donors for
their incredible support of this year’s event. “ARTS
ON THE HILL” promises to be a wonderful evening.
From jazz band and choir, to orchestra and theatre,
to sculpting, painting and photography, the diversity
of the arts at Bellarmine touches all of our students.
Tonight’s Fund an Item will directly support
programs that inspire creativity and nurture the
talents of our students.
With your support tonight we have the opportunity to
open doors for our “Artists on the Hill”.
We are thrilled that you are here to share in tonight’s
festivities and would like to thank you in advance for
your support.
Cheers to a wonderful evening!

A Message From the President
“In Jesuit education, particular care is given to the
development of the imaginative, the affective, and the
creative dimensions of each student in all courses of study.
These dimensions enrich learning and prevent it from being
merely intellectual. They are essential in the formation of the
whole person and are a way to discover God as He reveals
Himself through beauty. For these same reasons, Jesuit
education includes opportunities – through course work and
through extracurricular activities – for all students to come
to an appreciation of literature, aesthetics, music and the
fine arts.” – “Characteristics of Jesuit Education”, International
Commission on the Apostolate of Jesuit Education
Welcome to our 2015 PRIDE Auction, “Arts on the Hill”.
At Bellarmine, our strong curriculum in the fine
arts reflects our commitment to development of the
whole person. The arts are an expression of our
deep human longing for beauty and our emphasis on
the pursuit of excellence in human endeavor, in all
its many forms of expression, as a means of finding
and echoing God’s voice in the world and the human
experience. Through music, painting, sculpture,
acting, photography, and many other media, students
are encouraged to engage their creativity and
curiosity, to truly ‘seek for God in all things’.
Saint Ignatius and his followers also understood that it
is not enough to simply possess knowledge – one must
be able to share such knowledge with others in a way
that is compelling, clear, and affecting, in order to truly
be able to bring about change in the world. As a means
of communication with a profound ability to affect how
we see and engage with the world and those around us,
the arts are a logical and indeed imperative component
of a well-rounded Jesuit education.
Celebrating the beauty and wonder of God’s Creation
through the imagination, creativity and brave
commitment of our students is one of the great joys
of the Bellarmine experience, whether for curious and
creative students, proud and supportive parents, or
dedicated and visionary faculty. We look forward to
continuing to share these achievements with you in the
years to come – on our stages, in our classrooms, and
most importantly in the lives and accomplishments
of our graduates, in their ongoing efforts to put their
talents to use in expressing God’s love for the world in
so many different and moving ways.
Thank you for joining us this evening. I hope you
enjoy sharing in our celebration of the arts, nurtured
by our faculty, performed by our students, and
performed as always ad majorem Dei gloriam – for the
greater glory of God.
God bless,
Robert O. Modarelli lll B’82
General Auction Rules
Silent Auction
Pick-Up
Bid sheets are displayed or affixed near the
corresponding items on the silent auction tables.
A bid is made by writing your bid number on the
next available bid line.
All items should be picked up on the night they
are purchased unless other arrangements are
agreed to by the PRIDE Auction Director.
Illegible bid numbers or illegible names will be
rejected.
Paid receipts will be required to remove any
auction item or certificate.
For larger items, Orton Hall will be open from
10:00 a.m. to Noon on Sunday, March 22nd, to
remove items not transportable the night of
the auction.
Guaranteed bids may be made at any time prior
to that table closing. Entering a bid number in
the guaranteed bid box ends all bidding on that
item and guarantees the sale of that item to the
guaranteed bidder.
In the event of a dispute or desire for a miniauction by persons actively involved in the
bidding at the time of closing, the bidders may
request that a PRIDE judge conduct a bid-off.
Warranties
While every effort has been made to calculate
and describe each auction item correctly, values
indicated are estimates only, provided by the
donors, and are not warranted by Bellarmine for
tax purposes or for general value.
Please be careful: a bid number called out by
the auctioneer binds that bidder to purchase
that auction item should their number be the
final bid called.
All items are sold “as is” and Bellarmine neither
warrants nor represents and in no case shall be
responsible for the correctness of description,
genuineness, authorship, origin or condition of
the item’s donor-stated value.
The auctioneer will be the final judge as to the
successful bidder for an item offered during the
live auction.
Unless otherwise specifically noted on an item,
all certificates and/or services are valid for no
longer than one year from the date of the auction.
Miscellaneous
Live Auction
Bids during the live auction are made by raising
your bid number so that it can be easily seen
and having your bid number called out by the
auctioneer.
Payment
All items not fully paid for or picked up by April
18, 2015 will become the property of Bellarmine
and the PRIDE Auction.
A bid acknowledged by the auctioneer or by a
designated silent auction judge constitutes a
legal contract to buy.
All sales are FINAL. No refunds will be made
(unless otherwise specified on a particular item).
Full payment is required for all auction items
purchased this evening at the PRIDE Bank.
The PRIDE Bank will open at 8:30 p.m.
Payment may be made with cash, check, VISA or
MasterCard.
Restaurant certificates do not include alcoholic
beverages, tax, or gratuities unless otherwise
specifically noted on a certificate.
Bellarmine assumes no responsibility for travel
arrangements. No refunds will be made for
canceled trips or accommodations. All air
transportation is coach and is subject to blackout
dates unless otherwise specifically noted.
Contributions are tax deductible only to the
extent that the purchase price exceeds the donorstated value of any goods or services provided.
Contributions for Fund-an-Item are fully tax
deductible to the extent allowed by the bidder’s
personal tax situation.
Bellarmine reserves the right to withdraw any
item from auction prior to the start of the bidding
on that item.
Transportation to and/or from the point of the
experience is not provided unless otherwise
specifically noted.
The fee for returned checks is $30.
Heads or “Heart” Game
Prize: $1500 Bid Credit
Offered to all attendees for only
$15 per person.
This lively, quick game of “Heads or Tails” will get
our LIVE auction started by giving everyone in the
room an opportunity to turn $15 into $1500 within
a few minutes and to help Bellarmine be a safer
environment for everyone.
The proceeds from
this year’s game will
be used to purchase
5 new portable
automated external
defibrillators (AED)
for use throughout
the school. Each
year in America more
than 7,000 young
persons are lost due to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).
However, most schools cannot afford to have an MD
or EMT on school grounds during school hours and
after-school activities, but they can afford to have
easy-to-use automated external defibrillators (AEDs)
with voice prompts to walk users through the simple
steps necessary in life-saving defibrillation and CPR.
Every school should have an AED, especially a school
with athletic programs. Schools that have needed
a portable AED now say they can’t imagine being
without it.
At the beginning of the game our auctioneer will
ask each player to predict the outcome of a coin
toss (heads for head, tails for heart) by physically
placing their hands either on their own “head” or
“heart “. All choices are final. Once the auctioneer
tosses the coin and reveals the result, all those
having chosen incorrectly are eliminated from the
game and must sit down. The remaining players will
be asked to predict the outcome of the next coin
toss using the same method. Play will continue until
only one participant remains standing and we have a
winner! The winner receives a $1500 bid credit to go
toward the purchase of any one silent or LIVE item
purchased at the auction!

17.FUND-AN-ITEM “Arts on the Hill”
The history and tradition of the Arts as a part of the
Society of Jesus and more particularly the schools
they created dates back to its earliest origins. St.
Ignatius of Loyola (founder of the Jesuits) believed
artists had a great responsibility to direct the view
of the average person and to speak for the average
person. According to Ignatius, art was meant “to
teach, and thereby enrich humanity, to form and lead
young people and to illustrate God’s greater glory,
elevating humans to the fullness of God.”
Bellarmine has continued the tradition of Jesuitrelated art for more than 85 years. The joyous
sounds of choir and band have resonated from its
halls, auditorium, gymnasium and bleachers. Plays
of all genres have been produced inciting laughter,
joy, tears and emotions as they have played out
on our stages. Drawings, paintings, sculpture and
photography have captured our attention and stirred
our emotions as it has been displayed throughout
our campus. The Arts are not merely a diversion at
Bellarmine or an activity on the fringes; hundreds
of students each year are involved in creating visual
arts, performing and producing plays, performing in
one of the various bands or choral formations.
Tonight with this year’s Fund an Item there is a
wonderful opportunity on hand for the Bellarmine
community. We can make a statement that both
validates the importance of the Arts and provides for
a financial infusion to assist those students who are
directly involved.
Our Fund an Item this year will have a major impact
on the future of all of the art programs at Bellarmine.
It will provide needed funds in all aspects of the Arts
at Bellarmine, and significantly enhance the student
experience. The target amount to fully fund the
projects outlined is $150,000; $70,000 is targeted
to improvements and enhancements to our Theatre,
$30,000 is targeted for band and choral activities
and improvements to Allen Hall, $50,000 is targeted
to the conversion of space to new Arts classrooms in
Orton Hall.
Perhaps the words of the late Father General of the
Society of Jesus, Father Pedro Arrupe, S.J. speak to
the importance of the arts in our school and in our
lives, “You artists are the fortunate ones. You speak
and all listen, all understand. …They can touch
the wellsprings of the human heart…” Please be
generous in your support of the Arts on the Hill Fund
an Item and thanks.
