Moody was not surprised that his mare was pressed. “She was
never going to show the turn of foot that she had first up last year
in this race, and we always had that planned that we weren’t going
to be too far away.
“She loves the straight. I flagged it in December so it has
always been on the back of my mind and I think I have trained her
accordingly but obviously she’s had a seven furlong [1400m Orr
Stakes] race and to come back to the five [furlongs, 1000m] was
always going to be an ask.”
Moody strongly hinted that next Saturday’s Futurity Stakes (Gr
1, 1400m) is highly unlikely for Black Caviar.
“I would pretty much say she won’t be there next week. For her
to be there next Saturday, she probably had to have it softer today
so we’ll let the dust settle but she needed to have it softer today to
butter up three weeks in a row.

RACEWAY SCRAMBLES HOME
Gai Waterhouse won both the stakes races for two-year-olds
at Warwick Farm, Raceway (More Than Ready) scrambling home in
the $100,000 Canonbury Stakes (Listed) and Driefontein (Fastnet
Rock) battling home in the $100,000 Widden Stakes (Listed), both
races over 1100m.
Raceway started the $1.24 favourite in the Canonbury but
punters that took the short odds were feeling uneasy early in
the straight with Raceway battling to get to long-time leader, the
debutant Shelford (Redoute’s Choice).

Under a drive from Hugh Bowman, Raceway asserted late on to

“He is a class horse and I expected him to do what he did,”
Bowman explained.
“He’s a natural athlete and a ready-made two-year-old, there’s
plenty to like about him.”
Shopaholic (Pins) sprang something of an upset when she
edged out the $1.44 favourite Mosheen (Fastnet Rock) in a threeway finish to The Vanity (Gr 3, 1410m) at Flemington.
Having raced in third place to the home turn, Shopaholic came
away from the fence to make her challenge. Mosheen meanwhile

Analysis: Black Caviar was simply awesome. Racing on or near
the lead, she was seriously pressed by Hay List before the 300m
but lengthened her stride and went clear of a gallant Hay List
to win in near track-record time. Hay List was brave. Ridden
positively, he was there to press Black Caviar before the 300m
and, for a stride or three, looked like he might inflict defeat on
Black Caviar but when the mare quickened he was unable to go
with her. No other horse can go with her so there is no disgrace
in finishing second. Buffering was always near the lead, over
towards the rail side. He came through after the 300m when the
pressure was really on, staying on solidly to the line. Foxwedge
was allowed to find his feet and settled behind the leading group.
He was winding up strongly late and just missed third. Lone Rock
was off the early speed but she stayed on solidly down the centre
of the track through the final stages.
