Katuba CarePoint First Quarter 2015 Update
Greetings from Katuba CarePoint. We thank God for his provision and for all of the sponsors
that have partnered with Katuba CarePoint. Below are highlights of the activities that have
taken place during the first quarter of this year.
Survive Initiatives
Meals are provided each CarePoint day and all of the children in the sponsorship program
are benefitting from the meals. There has been a tremendous improvement in the general
health of the children due to the food that they enjoy during CarePoint days. Children are
also encouraged to eat a balanced diet while at home.
Health
There were a few children in the Program that were ill this quarter. They were able to receive
proper medical attention and treatment. The cases included Malaria, typhoid, tooth decay,
allergic conjunctivitis and minor injuries. However, great improvement was shown by all
these cases after receiving medical attention. There has been an outbreak of typhoid
country wide and therefore CarePoint management has combined efforts with Katuba Local
Council management to advocate for proper hygiene and sanitation with in the Community
of Katuba so as to reduce on cases of typhoid and malaria. The response is so far so good.
Hygiene and sanitation lessons were taught, specifically focusing on malaria prevention. It
was a very participatory process and great interest was shown. Due to the continued
increment in the cases of malaria among the children, it was of great importance to teach
them how they can prevent malaria. Many of the children showed a lot of interest and were
willing to share this knowledge with their families and friends. Regular hand washing was
also stressed as a way to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to other.
Home and School Visits
Home and school visits were conducted and are a way to work in the family environment to
learn firsthand about the living conditions of the children and tailor support to their needs. It
is also a way to improve on the physical, spiritual, and social well being of the children within
their homes. Children have opened up more & more with us during these visitations. Equally,
school visitations have helped children improve their grades as we encouraged them to work
harder and seek help from their teachers where need be.
Discipleship
Discipleship is one of the core components of CarePoint programming. Some of the lessons
from this quarter included Children of Character, The Story of Ruth, and The Shepherd Boy
(David) and Goliath. There was very high attendance shown for discipleship classes on
CarePoint days, more than the number in the sponsorship program. The children always
look forward to coming for discipleship at the CarePoint because it is a place where they can
express themselves and share the Word of God. They find it so interesting and always want
to be available to praise and worship God.
Thrive Initiatives
Education
School fees for the first term were paid for the children in the sponsorship program. This was
covered by sponsorship and caregiver support. The children also received scholastic
materials like books, pens, pencils, sets, and erasers. They were filled with joy upon
receiving their scholastic materials. They could not stop thanking God for His provision.
The children engaged in music, dance, and drama. This has helped them express
themselves better. They taught themselves simple songs in their teams. They love to sing
and dance and gives them a great deal of joy.
Succeed
Thirty children with in the program were able to attend training on art and craft, specifically
on how to make flower pins, bracelets and bath cloth.
Community Outreach
Eighty people were able to attend a training session on child protection as planned by the
CarePoint management. Community leaders were very supportive. Attendance was so
good and those that participated were glad that such issues were brought to light. The major
focus was on the rights of a child. Also, other issues that were stressed were proper hygiene
and sanitation and spreading the Gospel of Christ. CarePoint management and the Local
Council leaders came into agreement to fight against child mistreatment and therefore work
towards protecting the rights of a child. It was tremendous.
