MediaCityUK’s
ice rink
Speedy skates to success!
Home to the biggest German markets in the UK and hailed as the capital
of Christmas, Manchester was transformed into a winter wonderland at
the end of 2014 and hosted more than six weeks of fantastic Yuletide
celebrations.
Dotted around Manchester were various ice rinks including one situated
at The Quays on the plaza at MediaCityUK, which had a pop-up tipi bar
called The Lodge.
Peel Media, the company responsible for operating the event, called
on Speedy’s expertise to support the running of rental chillers to run
the ice rink, supply power to The Lodge and provide around the clock
maintenance service.

“We turned to Speedy to supply temporary
power for the ice rink and The Lodge because
of the team’s extensive experience in
providing equipment and support services
for large-scale events. Ensuring that the ice
was maintained at the correct temperature
was absolutely paramount and so we needed
a supplier that we could rely on. The service
Speedy provided was absolutely exceptional

Project background
MediaCityUK is a 200-acre mixed-use property development site on
the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal. Home to major BBC and ITV
departments, the University of Salford and over 80 businesses across the
creative and digital sectors, it is recognised as one of the most innovative
developments in Britain.
The ice rink officially opened on Thursday 6th November 2014 with
Dancing on Ice finalist and Coronation Street star Hayley Tamaddon,
performing two of her winning routines, and it remained open until
Christmas Eve.
More than 40,000 litres of water and 6,000 litres of refrigerant were
pumped along 12,000 metres of piping to create the 600 square metre
ice rink, which required a huge amount of power to keep the liquid frozen.
With a fleet of over 2,000 generator assets, competitive fuel prices and
access to a supply network of over six billion litres of fuel, all backed by
a team of highly specialised engineers, Speedy was Peel Media’s natural
supplier of choice.
Speedy solution
Speedy provided two 200kVA generators, a fuel tank and a 3,000 litre
fuel tank and delivered fuel to site outside of peak times to minimise
disruption.
Thousands of members of the public relied on Speedy’s provision of
power, with the generators operating 24/7 over a 10-week period.
Speedy’s tight build and break down schedule meant that the efficient
delivery, installation and collection was a complete success.
