THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE, FROM KATHY BOALS
Happy New Year Fellow Orchid Lovers! Well, here we go into another fun-filled year of the Conejo Orchid Society! I’m
very pleased to be your new president and look forward to getting to know all of you better and hope to see more of
you participate in our activities. Please do come to a board meeting or two (they are open to all members) and find out
what happens behind the scenes to make all of our fun meetings and events happen. We really have a lot of fun and the
work, if you can even call it that, is very enjoyable. Some of the things you might want to plan on:
1. We will be having our second planning meeting for our display at the Santa Barbara International Orchid Show on Sat.
January 23 at 11:00am at Vicky Price’s house. There is always food and wine involved in these meetings so that we can
keep up our strength.
2. Setting up and then tearing down our display at the Santa Barbara Show. You get to see the whole show from the
ground up without those pesky crowds AND you get first choice at all the vendors.
3. Driftwood gathering trip to Santa Barbara. We use the driftwood for the tillandsias that are to be sold at our annual
June Show and Sale. Leslie Naines-Brown has secured us June 3, 4 and 5 at the Thousand Oaks Library for the Show and
Sale. Go Leslie!
4. Tillandsia mounting party (probably at Gayle Brodie’s again).
NEWSLETTER EDITOR: GAYLE BRODIE (805) 551-8620 [email protected]
5. COS annual Library Show and Sale- this is a really fun event and is our major fundraiser for the year. Everyone who
has participated in this event in the past has really enjoyed it.
Our speaker this month will be our society’s good friend George Hatfield. George is a world renowned Cymbidium
breeder and grower who is located right here in Ventura County. He will be speaking on species Cymbidiums, a subject
that I’m sure will be completely new to most of us. In addition to his achievements with Cymbidiums, George is the new
president of The American Orchid Society- this is a very big deal and we look forward to his outstanding leadership of
that organization.
Our culture session will be given by Bill Gunning who will give a brief presentation on cold weather and your orchids.
See you all at the meeting!

GEORGE HATFIELD TO SPEAK ON CYMBIDIUM
SPECIES ON JANUARY 11
George Hatfield is the owner of Hatfield Orchids in Oxnard, California, where he grows stunningly beautiful Cymbidiums,
and he will talk to the club on Cymbidium species on January 11. George has spearheaded a fabulous new Cymbidium
species collection at the Huntington, and visits monthly to volunteer his expertise and experience growing the
Cymbidiums collection, which now numbers 104 plants and 19 different species (see the related story below).

HUNTINGTON VOLUNTEERS BUSY WITH CYMBIDIUM
SPECIES COLLECTION IN DECEMBER
Gayle Brodie and Leslie Naines-Brown arrived to find that a major windstorm had wreaked havoc the previous night with
the Cymbidium species collection while Brandon Tam, the Huntington Orchid Specialist, was on vacation. Gayle and
Leslie got all of the plants back on the bench and reconnected with their drip emitters, and then stabilized them by
setting all of the plastic cymbidiums pots inside heavy clay pots. On another visit, Leslie, Gayle and Joe Grodell installed
a new drip system featuring individual water volume controls for each pot. They also grouped all of the cymbidiums by
species, and spaced them out across both sides of both of the Cymbidium benches. The plants have been growing so
much that the original arrangement had become too crowded. George Hatfield, who is volunteering his time as an
advisor to the Huntington’s Cymbidium species collection (and who will be talking to our club in January on this subject),
has been exceptionally happy with the progress and growth of these plants.
Two of the Huntington’s new Cymbidium species collection in bloom - Cym. dayanum and Cym. quibiense.

they installed for the Cymbidium species collection at the Huntington.
