From the Pastor’s Desk…
We lost one of our Auxiliary Bishops, Most Rev. Ignatius Catanello, this past week.
Bishop Cataniello was Ordained a Priest in 1966 and became an Auxiliary Bishop in
1994. He was a dear friend. May he Rest in Peace.
Today the second collection is for the flowers which will adorn the Altars.
There will be 2 collections on both Palm Sunday and Easter. Please be as generous as
possible.
Please return the Lenten Self-Denial Folders.
A special Thank You to the St. Athanasius Travel Club, a sponsor of the Golden

Remember When?
As we are soon approaching our 100th year, it is appropriate to honor the dedicated
priests who have ministered to our parishioners in the past.
Father Eugene Donnelly was our founder and first pastor. He presided over Saint Athanasius
for 18 years until his death in 1931. The first Mass he celebrated was officially recorded on December
17, 1913. It was Father Donnelly who chose Saint Athanasius as the patron saint of our parish. In
1914, Father Donnelly purchased the land on which the “little Church” was built. The first Mass was
celebrated in the unfinished Church on November 22, 1914. During the years that Fr. Donnelly was
pastor, St. Athanasius blossomed into a dynamic and prosperous parish. He began fundraising for a
school in 1922, but he did not live to see his dream fulfilled as he passed away in 1931. He was known
for his leadership, courage and defense of the truth.
Father Donnelly was succeeded by Father Kelaher who continued the dream of the school. Father Kelaher was pastor from 1931 to 1949. The Depression caused the delay in the building of the
school. However, it resulted in a larger school being built. Father Kelaher offered the first Mass in the
parish auditorium in May 1938. He was transferred in 1949 and Father Elwood Purick succeeded him.
Father Purick was pastor from 1949 to 1975. During the many years he was pastor, the parish
grew rapidly. Our “little Church” could no longer accommodate everyone. Much like his predecessors
before him, he also had a vision. His vision of a new Church was realized on July 13, 1962 when our
beautiful Church was completed and dedicated. He was joined in this effort by Father John Fleming.
My memories of Father Fleming are that he was a tall, kind and sincere man who loved to help people.
He organized the Parish Club for the youth of the parish and held dances in the gym and was a part of
St. Athanasius for 25 years until he was sent to Rome. In 1963, Father Fleming became the Spiritual
Director of the North American College in Rome.
In the coming months, we will continue to honor our Priests both past and present who have
helped mold St. Athanasius into the amazing parish it is today.

Lenten Concert
On Thursday , March 21 @ 8 pm, the St. Athanasius Church choirs with members of Christ Church
Cobble Hill Choir and other guest choristers will perform a special Lenten concert in continuance with
the parish's 100th anniversary. The program will include the music of celebrated composers such as
Couperin, Lloyd Webber, and Faure. This concert will be conducted by Steven Laplante, long-time Director of Music Ministries at St. Athanasius Church. A particular highlight of the evening will be a sacred cantata titled "The Savior" written in the mid 20th century by William Lloyd Webber, father of Andrew Lloyd Webber, a well known London choir director and composer of his time. This dramatic choral
work, with bass and tenor soloists, recounts in a modern tonal language the story leading up to Christ's
crucifixion. Our Lenten recital will conclude with the last three movements from Faure's Requiem and
the children's choir will sing the famous "In Paradisum". This will truly be an evening of beautiful liturgical music sung by a fine ensemble. Tickets are available at the door are priced at $15. For information,
please contact 236-0124.

Respect Life Ministry
We want all Catholics to know about these horrific abortion facts that are rarely made public.
1. In NY 41% of all pregnancies are aborted
2. Abortions in the USA: surgical abortions per
year 1.2 million per day; 3,288 per hour; 137
abortions every 23 seconds.
3. Fourteen million chemical abortions yearly.
4. 54,599,615 abortions since 1973 (40 yrs of
abortions) - 40 years of defiance to God.
Knights of Columbus - Cavallaro Council
Free Throw Contest
Two St. Athanasius parishioners have made it through
three rounds of the free throw contest. The first was the
council, then the district and the third was the county.
The two parishioners are Anthony Orlando, (age 10)
who made 19 out of 25 baskets and the second parishioner is Anthony Church (age 11). He made 24 out of 25
baskets - that was at the county level. Now they move
onto the regionals and the finals will be held at West
Point. Everyone at Cavallaro Council and St. A’s wish
you both good luck - have fun!
