Thank you to everyone that attended my recent floor
meetings and to all the floor representatives that assisted with the coordination. I hope you found them
informative and worth your time. As I mentioned, I
will also be hosting listen group on February 12th. I
will be reviewing the resident survey results and will
share the new floor plans and pricing for the expansion. In order to accommodate the group size, I will
host two sessions. One will be at the usual time from
2-3pm and there will be a second session from 3:304:30pm. I look forward to seeing everyone then.
One item that came up during floor meetings was
related to "respect for your neighbor". We appreciate
that community living can be a challenge and that the
sound proofing between units could be improved. I'm
asking everyone to help keep the noise between units
by :
*Keep TV volumes to a respectful level - if you have
a hearing impairment, consider using head phones,
especially if you watch TV after 11pm.
*For residents with solid surface floors on floors 2
thru 4, please remove hard soled shoes while walking
around apartment.
*Do laundry between 9am-10pm.
Thank you, in advance for your help with this request.
In closing, I encourage you to get involved with all
the wonderful activities around this month's "Living
It". Residents and team members at over 70 communities around the country will be participating in similar programs and celebrating their commitment to
successful aging and living life to its fullest no matter what the age.

Successful Aging “Living Your Best!”
Expressions of Love
Older adult sexual expressions a
taboo topic? “Sexual Expressions” defined is how we communicate and present ourselves
to the world as sexual beings.
It’s a topic many don’t talk about, but surprisingly a
study published in the New England Journal of
Medicine revealed that a large number of older
adults are still interested in intimacy. Attitudes are
changing as we approach a Silver Tsunami
(growing population of older adults) since baby
boomers (those between 1946-1964) are soon to
enter the picture, these individuals came of age in a
world that was more tolerant of sexuality. They
reached adulthood when safe and effective forms of
contraception were readily available, encouraging
sexual activity for pleasure and self-expression. We
have cultural assumptions about the biological aspect of sexual aging including the belief that biological and life changes reduce or eliminate the desire
for sexual activity. This notion is due in part to
women’s status as widows leaving them without
partners. Sexual desire and activity continue for
many people throughout life. With advancing age,
some changes occur that may impact sexual relationships, but many of these can be remedied. Researchers hope that that landmark studies will serve
as a catalyst to open discussions between health
care providers and their patients on this important
topic. Studies have also shown hormones and neurochemicals released from sexual expressions can
actually help to reduce pain and increase happiness.
Let’s explore the psychosocial needs that sexuality
can fulfill. One element of the psychosocial needs
met through healthy sexuality is the need for intimacy. Intimacy is close familiarity or friendship, intimacy is a basic human need. Healthy sexual expression is one way in which the
Sexual expression impacts all 4 components of successful aging consider
the four components of health: Physical, Social, Intellectual and Spiritual
Benefits of Healthy sexual expression
among older adults:
need for intimacy can be met. Healthy sexuality is
not the only way in which the need for intimacy can
be met – the need for intimacy can be met through
non-sexual touch, basic attention, deeply looking
into the eyes and in other ways of interacting (3.
Peters, R. 2004, Social Isolation and Loneliness).
Intimacy is a basic human need. Understanding intimacy can help us understand why sexual expression
is especially medicinal and healing for older adults in
a long term care setting. Intimacy and sexual expression is not the only way to alleviate loneliness, nor is
it the perfect pill for all loneliness. Consider the fact
that it is inevitable that sexuality changes throughout
the course of life. As a result, sexuality can be a portal for personal development and growth. As we adjust to age-related biological, social, cultural changes
this all affects are sexuality. The ability to be resilient
and flow with these changes may reflect neuroplasticity – or the ability to re-wire our brain by creating
new neural pathways. This explains the notion that
sexuality reflects multiple dimensions of the self.
Now let’s look at other benefits of healthy sexual expression. Healthy sexuality – increased intimacy leads
to improved relationships, self acceptance and improved health. What are some other benefits of
healthy sexual expression? Healthy sexual expressions allow us to communicate and present ourselves
to the world as sexual beings. Examples of healthy
sexual expressions are: words, desire to remain attractive, holding hands, kissing or hugging etc. There
has been increased research on psychoneuroimmunology that reveals that people who participate in sexual
expressions are happier (neurochemicals make people
feel happier) and generally have improved immune
function and fewer health problems (Rebecca Chaplin, LS, MA Gerontologist and Somatic Sexologist,
Advanced Institute of Human Sexuality San Francisco CA).

It’s About PARKING
Those of us who attended Julie’s informative Floor
Meetings last month learned that resident parking
continues to be a problem. As expansion proceeds parking for everyone will become even
more difficult. She told us new emphasis will be
given to tagging parking violators. The front circle
of The Buckingham is for guests and visitors only.
Residents should only use this area for short periods of time, if needed. Valet service will continue
to be available for residents needing assistance.
Likewise, visitor parking behind the second gate
should not be used by residents or caregivers.
Vehicles will be tagged here also and violators will
be notified. Eventually, a fee may be charged for
“illegal” parking.
Note that a new “No Parking” sign has been
placed along Old Farm Road and others have
been installed to allow better vision when exiting
our community. Violators here also will be tagged
and notified of their violation. Residents should
notify their “helpers” not to park in these restricted
areas.
Let’s all do our best to improve the
present parking situation.

needs. We also ask that those residents using assistive
devices please remain seated until the driver or staff
member is present to assist you. It is our goal to provide all residents and staff with the safest precautions
when in transport or at home. Please help us to help
you by being patient as we serve each resident.
Those residents needing a personal companion please
make your arrangements to have them accompany you
to assure a safe and successful outing for all.
We want to remind residents that outings are scheduled to be time efficient and ask that you arrive in
plenty of time to board as we will leave promptly as
scheduled.
For all ticketed events use the sign-up sheet which is
posted on the bulletin board near the mail room. Then
stop by Lifestyles to sign an ancillary form confirming
your ticketed reservation.
REMINDER: You are FINANCIALLY responsible for a TICKET when you sign up to attend a
TICKETED EVENT.
Thank you,
