Accompany One Another with Mercy (Pope Francis)
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This weekend marks the official beginning of the new pastoral year. It
promises to be a year of grace and growth, of service and accompaniment, of mercy and
mission.
Each year we open the new pastoral year with a renewal of our parish
spirituality, that is, stewardship. Our spirituality was chosen by the parish pastoral council when we became a parish, back in 1998. We took (and take) seriously St. Pauls’ exhortation to the Corinthians: “Think of us in this way, as servants of Christ and stewards of
God’s mysteries” (I Cor. 4:1). Stewards must prove themselves trustworthy. As disciples
we prove ourselves trustworthy through the stewardship of our time in prayer, the carrying out of ministry and service, and thanking the Lord for his gift of life through generous tithing of our total financial resources to the church.
Pope Francis has called an extraordinary jubilee, a Holy Year of Mercy.
“I have often thought about how the Church might make clear its mission of being a
witness to mercy,” he wrote. It is journey that begins with a spiritual conversion. For this
reason, I have decided to call an extraordinary Jubilee that is to have the mercy of God at
its center. It shall be a Holy Year of Mercy. We want to live this Year in the light of the
Lord's words: ‘Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful’ (cf. Lk 6:36).”
In Latin the word mercy is misericordia. I like to break the word up
syllabically: mi-ser-ri-cor-dia. It means, “God (dia), remember, bring back (ri) to [your]
heart (cor) my (mi) being (ser).” When we ask God to have mercy on us we ask him
simply to remember who we are, that we are nothing more than dust. As Psalm 103:14
sings: “For he knows how we are formed, remembers that we are dust.” We ask God to
remember that we humans are his very heart, his very being, in some sense the very reason for his eternal existence.
In light of this Holy Year of Mercy, we have chosen as our own parish
pastoral theme: Accompany one another with mercy. In this way we will recall throughout the year the obligation in love we have toward one another. We beg God to remember that our being is his very heart. We remember that our neighbor’s being is our very
heart, that the mercy we have received from God in Jesus Christ we must give to one
another in the church, and that every Christian is obligated to accompany one another
with mercy.
After all the Masses this weekend and next we are holding our annual
ministry faire. The many and varied ministries through which you can accompany another in mercy are “on display.” These ministries are sacramental, pastoral, prayerful, biblical, ecclesiastical, personal, and O so rich in mercy. I invite you to visit the faire, consider
these many opportunities, and commit to at least one or the other. At the faire you also
can sign up for one or any of the many education, catechetical, and support ministries
we are offering, from Bible study to mens’ and womens’ groups, youth ministries, children sacramental preparation classes, etc. On Sunday mornings, too, there is a special
guest coming in to help educate the children and us all on some marvels of God’s creation and his special creatures. Don’t miss it! Come to the faire!
On another note, we welcome Msgr. Bernie Schmitz to the 5:00 p.m.
Mass on Sunday. Msgr. Schmitz is celebrating the Eucharist and confirming 51 of our
young people. I congratulate them all and thank each for his/her openness to God’s
Holy Spirit and for wanting to receive the grace of the Holy Spirit’s sevenfold gifts. Be
assured of my prayers.
Finally, a gentle reminder that beginning Monday, August 24, all weekday morning Masses (M-F) will begin at 7:00 a.m. instead of 7:30. The change in the
schedule allows us to more generously respond to the needs of parishioners, school parents, and commuters.

Console the Heart of Christ
A reflection for the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by
Mother Maria-Michael Newe, OSB.
The Collect for the Feast of the Sacred Heart reads:
O God, who in the Heart of Your Son wounded by our sins,
bestow on us in mercy the boundless treasure of Your Love.
Grant, we pray, that in paying Him the homage of our devotion, we may also offer worthy reparation.
“You do not hear that word very often – reparation. Yet it
is a necessary word. We do have to make reparation for
sin. The best reparation we can possibly do, in life, is
simply to be truly sorry for our sins, to decide I am not
going to do that anymore, then to do some small means of
penance. It doesn’t have to be grand. The real secret to
reparation is love. To do a small thing with great love is
huge. To do a great thing without love means absolutely
nothing.
will. In desolation, darkness, and various doubts, have recourse to Me and to your spiritual director. He will always
answer you in My name. Do not bargain with any temptation; lock yourself immediately in My Heart and, at the
first opportunity, reveal the temptation to the confessor
(Diary of Divine Mercy, 1760).
CHILDREN & FAMILY FORMATION
The most we can possibly do is to do
all things with love. To prefer nothing to the love of Christ (RB 4:21).
To respond with love. If our
thoughts are of love, then our actions will be of love. It is no small
thing to be devoted to the Sacred
Heart of Christ. To be willing to do
more, to suffer more, to be willing to
give the very best of ourselves with love, and not to
count the cost. That’s heroic.
Christ deserves our love. We should do all that we can to
console the Heart of Christ. He mourns today for His
Church and yet He rejoices in His Church. There is a victory already begun and it begins with each one of us. It
begins with love, it ends with love, and it goes into eternity with love. Love one another; that He may be one in
us and we in Him. To talk about it is really nothing; to
live it is everything. Live it... and we shall do it together.”
Something to think about….

This Week:
Sunday: Sun. 5 PM Ensemble rehearsal, 4:30pm
All rehearsals are in Room 105
of the St. Joseph Ministry Center.
The Façade of the Church
Inspired by the Basilica of St.
Ambrose in Milan (left), the western façade of the church frames
3 large windows which bath the
interior with light. The 3 windows symbolize the 3 ways
Christ provides for us to come to
know the Father - the light of
created nature (sun), the light of
the sacrament of Matrimony and the living of family life, and the
light of the Eucharist and the sacred priesthood.
We enter the secular space of the world to the sacred space of
the church through 3 doors recalling the image of Christ, the
Good Shepherd, the Gate of the sheepfold. The doors are
opened before each Mass (weather permitting) to welcome all
who come and to embody St. John Paul II’s exhortation to “Open
wide the doors to Christ!”

Quote: “Regarding the problem of the death penalty. ...
The problem must be viewed in the context of a system
of penal justice ever more in line with human dignity
and thus, in the end, with God’s plan for man and society. … If bloodless means are sufficient to defend human
lives against an aggressor and to protect human order
and the safety of persons, public authority must limit
itself to such means, because they better correspond to
the concrete conditions of the common good and are
more in conformity to the dignity of the human person.
