Kathie Woods :: Head Coach
1995, 1996 & 2004 NWAACC Coach of the Year
This is Kathie’s 28th year at the helm of
the Cougar volleyball program. In 1995,
under Kathie’s direction, the program
made major strides in becoming a
perennial contender compiling a 522-221
record since 1995, a 72 percent winning
average. Being at the top of the league is
something Cougar teams and fans have
grown accustomed to. The Cougars have
broug ht home six Southern Region titles
and two NWAACC Championships in 1996
and 2004.
Kathie’s success as a coach eventually led
to public speaking engagements on
motivational techniques and team unity
during the off season and she has since
written a book entitled, "The Honor of
Coaching".
In the Cougar Volleyball program, Kathie
stresses her philosophy in giving 100% in
school, volleyball and life. Her athletes
work hard at becoming not only better
volleyball players, but also on character
development and showing respect in all of
life’s situations. Her team’s successes
have led her to receive multiple awards when she was selected NWAACC Coach of the Year in
1995, 1996 and 2004. She has also been selected Southern Region Coach of the year in ’95,
’96, ’02 and 2004.

A devout Christian, Kathie initiated the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) chapter at Clackamas and was twice selected FCA
College Coach of the Year (2007 & 2009) for the Portland metropolitan area. She was also featured in the FCA’s national bi-monthly
publication, STV (Sharing The Victory) in August 2006.
Kathie got involved with sports at a young age and accelerated at every sport in which she participated. As a multi-sport athlete, she
was always known for her poise, intelligence and confidence on the court and field. She competed at state and some regional level
competition in tennis, softball, racquetball and volleyball. Her successes in softball and volleyball eventually led to her playing for
Oregon State University’s Volleyball squads during the 1974-75 & 1975-76 seasons. She also competed in Softball at OSU during
the 1974-75 season.
After college competition, Kathie turned her love for sports towards coaching and teaching. She taught swimming for over 20 years
and continues to teach racquetball as well as professional course work, first aid and CPR.
Her first collegiate coaching assignment was with Linn-Benton Community College during the ’81-83 seasons. In 1983, she moved
to the Oregon City area and became head volleyball coach at Clackamas.
A dynamic individual, Kathie served on the NWAACC’s Executive Board from 2004-2007 and is an Athletic Commissioner for the
league.
4
Kathie hails from Dallas, Oregon where she graduated from Dallas High School in 1974. She holds a Master of Education (1981)
and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Administration (1978) from Oregon State University.

Coaches
Kristen Sundquist :: First Assistant— This will be Kristen’s Third season as an assistant
with Clackamas. She specializes in working with the setters and defense. As head assistant, Kristen is
involved with all aspects of the volleyball program, including the recruiting process, fund-raising and the
alumni events.
A 2003 graduate of Mountain View HS in Bend, Kristen enjoyed great success as a player in the NWAACC,
playing for the league's 3rd place Lane team in 2003 before joining the Coug ars for the 2004 season.
Kristen earned all-region honors as a setter and led the Cougars to its second NWAACC Championship.
She then continued her education at the University of Oregon, completing her Bachelor of Science degree in
Psychology.
Kristen has been involved in coaching club ball for Oregon City Volleyball Club 16's and Webfoot Juniors
Volleyball Club 14's. Kristen will be teaching First Aid, CPR and P.E. activity classes as well as working in the
Central Issue area of the Athletic Department.
Lindsay Schiely :: Assistant— This is Lindsay’s fifth season with the Cougar coaching staff.
Lindsay's primary responsibilities will be developing the middle blockers this season.
She played for the Cougars during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons and led the team to a combined
65-21 record, a Southern Region Championship and NWAACC 2nd place finish in 2003.
Lindsay had a stellar college career receiving both NWAACC Academic All-American and Volleyball AllAmerican while at Clackamas. She then achieved all-academic honors and was twice a first team all-league
selection at NCAA Div II, Eastern New Mexico. ESPN the Magazine also selected Lindsay to the All-Academic
District 6 First Team in her sophomore year at ENMU.
Lindsay holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Eastern New Mexico University and an AAOT
from Clackamas CC in 2004. She is a 2002 graduate of Reynolds HS. Lindsay is currently in the nursing
program at Mt. Hood Community College.
Heather Gerke :: Assistant— T his will be Heather's first season with the Cougar coaching
staff.
A 2005 graduate from Crook County in Prineville, Heather starred for the Cougars during the 2005-06 and
2006-07 seasons. She helped lead the team to a 41-9 record and a 2nd place finish in the 2006 NWAACC
Championships.
Her tenacious defensive play and leadership earned her a spot of the 2006 Southern Region First Team as a
libero. Heather then went on to play her 2007-08 season at Seattle University before transferring to Portland
State where she received her Bachelor of Science in Communication.
Heather currently works for UPS.
Casie Hulden :: Assistant— Casie has been a long time assistant coach with Kathie since
1998. A defensive specialist, she was member of the 1994-95 Cougar teams and served as team captain for
the 1995 Southern Region Champions. The ‘95 team had an amazing 45-9 season record and finished 4th
overall in the NWAACC. Casie then went on to play for Southern Oregon University, where once again her skills
and leadership qualities led to her assignment as the 1997 Raider’s team captain.
Casie graduated from SOU with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Science and earned her AAOT
from Clackamas in 1996. She is a 1994 graduate of Aloha High School. She now works full time as a Project
Manager at Integrated Services Inc. Casie is currently underg oing a career change and is attending Concordia
University to become a surgical assistant.

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK
Young talented squad will bring it in 2010
Every year when I go to write the new volleyball season’s outlook it never ceases to amaze me with how different each of my teams
are. I am entering my 30th year of Jr. College coaching this year (28th at Clackamas) and I feel just as excited as my first year of
coaching. I feel like a little kid in a candy store! I approached this year with a clean slate. I have recruited 9ninenew Cougars to
the squad and we are going to have an entirely new look. I love it! I am filled with excitement and anticipation of a fun filled year.
This new team has a ton of character! As I get to know them I have so much respect for them. They are committed and working
hard already, to prove that they believe in the Cougar philosophy of giving 100% in school, volleyball and lif e. They are fun! They
work hard…they laugh…they encourage eac h other…they respect each other. Yes, this team has what it takes to come
together. The bonus is…they can play volleyball too!!
Now with all of this excitement comes a little hesitation…I will have to be honest. We are young. We come from many different
high schools and club programs. It will take us a little while to come together on the court. I plan on being patient. (I may need to
be reminded! J) But I do know that these girls will work hard and are planning on being successful. I never approach any season
thinking anything less than reaching for the title. At the Jr. College level every season is new for every team. That is what makes it
exciting. The ages are pretty consistent and it will boil down to the team that does come together and finds all of its strengths and
develops them to the fullest. We plan on doing that.
The Cougar strengths this year lie in our depth. We have so many options that we can do on offense. We have a pair of great
setters who are working hard with each other and they complement each other well. Kylee has great hands and Courtney moves to
the ball very smoothly. They both have a wealth of experience setting and both will be leaders for us. I feel very confident in the
setting category.
We have good hitters in Taylor, who can place the ball where she wants and hits hard. We also have Natalie who really “likes to hit
the ball”. Kristin puts up an amazing block and leaps out of the gym. Shauna is getting better and better every day and is a pillar of
strength for this team. Haylee is another good leaper and comes with a ton of experience. She will be a little slower to the lineup
as she is mending from Achilles surgery…but she will work her way in and there is no doubt that we will utilize her skills. Bethany
has a great arm swing and is working hard to fill in when needed in the front row. Ali King is another rock. She came in great
shape and can play the front row or the back row when needed. She is very mature and is an excellent example of what we desire
from our athletes, both on and off the court.
Our defense will be very fun to watch. We always pride ourselves on Cougar defense and this year will be no exception. With
Rachael (our lone returnee) leading the way on defense I am confident that not many balls are going to hit the floor. The girls will
be diving and digging, and tearing up the court on defense. The team is fun to watch. They are loud and full of energy. Rachael
will bring back her killer serve that will make our opponents want to run for cover when they are on our home court!
There are more surprises in store. You will just have to keep coming and see us progress. Our goal is to be better and better every
single match. We will be scratching and clawing…all the way back to the top…where we belong. Jump on and enjoy the ride with
us!! You will have a “roaring” good time. Get to know these girls and what they stand for. You will be impressed! I know I am! I
know I will enjoy the honor of working with these girls and I am looking forward to the fun memories we are going to share this
year. Thanks for your support and we will see you at the games!! Don’t forget to stand and clap for your Cougs! (An occasional
ROAR won’t hurt either!)
Still Diggin it! - Coach Kathie
PS. A side note: This year you will not see #5 in the lineup. We are
holding out that number in honor of Richelle Heacock (No.5), last year’s
Cougar setter, who was seriously injured in a car wreck on Jan. 4,
2010. Richelle is presently paralyzed from the chest down. Richelle is
determined to walk and play again and is working hard every day with
that purpose. Our thoug hts and prayers are with Richelle and her
family. She is a true Cougar. We love her and are so very proud of her!

Team Cougar & Mission
Team Cougar
Home of the Cougars, Clackamas Community College achieves excellence in athletics.
Since becoming a member of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) in 1984, the Cougars have been leaders in
every sport--winning 48 northwest titles. Clackamas proudly represents the best in Oregon athletics, competing in the highly competitive
Southern Region -- a division entirely comprised of Oregon co mmunity colleges. As a full-time Clackamas student, you have the opportunity to
participate in any of the sports available at Clackamas, including men's baseball, women's softball, men's and women's basketball, men's and
women's track, women's volleyball, women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, and wrestlin g. In keeping with the standards of the program, e mphasis is put on academic progress as well as athletic opportunity. Team travel, uniforms, and health insurance are provid ed.
Athletic Program Philosophy
Intercollegiate Athletics are a part of the comprehensive educational program offered by Clackamas Community College. They are sa nctioned by
the Board and are expected to offer the same kind of general services that any other areas of the College offers.
Athletics, whether individual or team sports, help students while they are in colle ge and prepare them for life experiences. They are of
value to individuals in terms of enhanced physical and mental well-being; enjoyment derived from participation; ambition and pride, which arise
from sporting endeavor; and friendship and sharing, which often accompany participation in sports. In addition, many indiv iduals, w hile competing in athletics, increase their awareness of other available educational programs.
It is possible that many doors wi ll open to those who participate in Intercollegiate Athletics. Physical Education and Health Instruction,
Professional Athletics, Coaching, Training, Recreational Fields, Sports Writin g or Broadcastin g, and Pro motion or Publicity may be are as of interest to students who have participated in athletics at Clackamas Community College. They may also use their community colle ge experience to
mature and improve before moving to a higher level of co mpetition.
Along with services to individuals, a good athletic program al so offers services to its school, community, and district. The morale of an
entire college and areas can be enhanced by performances in athletics. Publi c recognition of the services the institution offers often comes
through initial contact with student/athletes who represent the College.
Thus, athletics at Clackamas Community College are clearly within the total philosophy of the College and do provide opportunities for
many students to reach their desired goals.
