2005 Season Recap
Cougars Start Slowly - Finish Strong in 2005
An untypically slow start for the defending NWAACC champions took it’s toll on the season for the Cougs. With 10 freshmen on
the new team, it took the majority of the season to become w hat the Cougars are typically known for…winning. The year ended
in success though, as the Cougars won 10 of their last 12 appearances, claiming championships in both the prestigious Halloween Classic (2 years in a row) and the Big Bend Crossover tournament.
"It was a growing year for us but I am really proud of the way the Cougars fought the entire year. Most teams would
have given up, but this squad persevered and came out winners in the end. This should prove helpful in getting a great start
for the 2006 season" said Coach Kathie Woods.
Sami Hennessy and Jessica Heidenreich both made appearances in the Sophomore All-Star Game and Heather Gerke
was twice named NWAACC Defensive Player of the Week. Hennessy and Rachel Gowen provided stellar performances all season and were selected to the Southern Region All-Star Team. In another top honor, freshman Margo W yatt was selected as the
Fellowship of Christian Athletes' College Player of the Year.
Gowen's strong performances lead to her signing with the current NAIA Champions at California Baptist University next
season while Heidenreich and Ashli Itami both received NCAA and NAIA scholarships to continue playing volleyball after Clackamas.

Cougar volleyball program. In 1995, under
Kathie’s direction, the program made major
strides in becoming a perennial contender,
compiling a 495-148 record, a 77 percent
winning average. Being at the top of the
league is something Cougar teams and fans
have grow n accustomed to. The Cougars
have brought home six Southern Region titles and two NWAACC Championships in
1996 and, most recently, in 2004.

Kathie’s success as a coach eventually led to
public speaking engagements on motivational techniques and team unity during the off
season and she has since written a book entitled, The Honor of Coaching. In the Cougar Volleyball program Kathie stresses her philosophy in giving 100% in school, volleyball and life. Her athletes work hard at becoming not only better volleyball players, but
also on character development and showing respect in all of life’s situations. Her
team’s successes have led her to multiple NWAACC awards when she was selected Coach of the Year in 1995, 1996 and
2004. She has also been selected Southern Region Coach of the year in ’95, ’96, ’02 and 2004.
A devout Christian, Kathie initiated the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) chapter at Clackamas and last year was selected
FCA College Coach of the Year for the Portland metropolitan area. She was also featured in the FCA’s national bi-monthly publication, STV (Sharing The Victory) in August 2006.
Kathie got involved with sports at a young age and accelerated at every sport she participated. As a multi-sport athlete, she
was always known for her poise, intelligence and confidence on the court and field. She competed at state and some regional
level competition in tennis, softball, racquetball and volleyball. Kathie also earned state medals in table tennis and competed
against Judy Bochenski, a member of the USATT Hall of Fame. Her successes in softball and volleyball eventually led to her
playing for Oregon State University’s Volleyball squads during the 1974-76 seasons. She also competed in Softball at OSU during the 1974-75 season.
After college competition, Kathie turned her love for sports towards coaching and teaching. She taught swimming for over 20
years and continues to teach racquetball as well as professional course work, first aid and CPR. Her first collegiate coaching
assignment was with Linn-Benton Community College during the ’81-82 season. In 1983, she moved to the Oregon City area
and became Volleyball Head Coach at Clackamas.
A dynamic individual, Kathie also serves on the NWAACC’s Executive Board, Volleyball Committee and she is an Athletic C ommissioner for the league. She also coordinates and directs Clackamas’ Intramural Sports activities.
Kathie hails from Dallas, Oregon where she graduated from Dallas High School in 1974. She holds a Master of Education
(1981) and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Administration (1978) from Oregon State University.

Southern Region Championship and NWAACC 2nd place finish in 2003. Lindsay had a stellar college career
receiving both NWAACC Academic All-American and Volleyball All-American while at Clackamas. She then

team had an amazing 45-9 season record and finished 4th overall in the NWAACC. Casie then went on to play
for Southern Oregon University , where once again her skills and leadership qualities led to her assignment as
the 1997 Raider’s team captain.
Casie graduated from SOU with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Science and earned her AAOT
from Clackamas in 1996. She is a 1994 graduate of Aloha High School. She now works full time as a Project

Schiely, she helped to guide the Cougars to the 2003 NWAACC Southern Division championship and a second
place overall finish at the NWAACC Tournament, earning all-league honorable mention honors. She completed
her amateur volleyball career at NCAA Div II, University of Alaska Anchorage where she was one of the leaders
for the Seawolves.
Michelle also had an outstanding prep career at Canby High School, earning first team all-league honors as a
junior and senior for the Pac-9 Conference back-to-back champions. Her career goal is to become a emergency room nurse and has returned to CCC to complete the nursing program. Once she obtains her two-year
RN, Michelle will work towards her bachelor's degree.

2006 OUTLOOK
COUGAR VOLLEYBALL - RELOADED!
A Championship Run Possible in 2006!
The Cougars are excited about a fresh new start for 2006. Last year our character was tested
and I believe we passed the test. We certainly were much improved from the start of the year
and it took hard work and dedication to improve the way be did by year’s end (winning 10 of
our last 12 matches and two tournaments). This year, though, we are starting much stronger,
with the strength and experience of five returning Cougars from the 2005 squad.
Returning strong for the Cougars is sophomore outside hitter Meggan Chapin, who
played much of her freshmen year injured. Meggan has worked hard at her rehab and has
come back in top shape with her textbook-perfect jumping form. Also much stronger and
healed is middle blocker Aubrey Schneider, a red-shirt sophomore from the 2005 season.
Aubrey had struggled the entire year, getting over injuries, but things are looking positive for
the stellar athlete as she continues her climb back to all-star status. Aubrey is a born leader
and is working hard to get her team back to the championships.
Also returning for the Cougars are defensive standouts Jami Duhrkoop and Heather
Gerke. These two ladies have put in extra hours, competing against each other, to make each
other stronger and the entire team more competitive. Both are defensive stars that are capable of leading any team on defense and bring back the reputation that Clackamas has in their
defense. They are extremely exciting to watch! Rounding out the returnees is outside hitter
and all-around player, Margo Wyatt. Margo is one serious Cougar in her endeavor to help
bring the team back to Championship status.
The recruiting class joining the Cougar lineup is spectacular!! You can view what
each of them brings to the program in the player bios area of this guide. When you have several athletes that dominated in high school and other colleges around the nation joining an
already strong nucleus, the outcome can be huge for this program!! Standouts such as twotime 4A All-State OH Rhea Wortman bring that excitement. Others, such as experienced and
dynamic setter Malia Kamahoahoa, quick and clever setter Carla Crowder, and dedicated
and committed outside hitter Carley Johnson … when these young ladies join Holly Coutts,
Kara McGinty, and Sarah Hall….this creates a synergistic effect that will be DAN GEROUS.
For those of you who do not know what a synergistic effect is, I will tell you… It is “when two or more things (or experienced athletes) combine together to form a more potent, powerful, NEW thing (or TEAM)!! That is what we are about this
year…forming a new team that is powerful---using the philosophy that we have always had (giving 100% in school, volleyball
and life) to get there and knowing that “The Heart of a Champion Lies Within” , we are ready…OK… I will say it…Ready to
RRROOAAARRRRRRR… Here we go…hang on for another wild ride to the top! Join us! It is guaranteed to be a thriller ride and a
whole lot of fun!! “ - Coach Kathie

Team Cougar
TEAM COUGAR
Home of the Cougars, Clackamas Community College strives for excellence in athletics.
Since becoming a member of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) in 1984, the Cougars have
been leaders in every sport--winning 23 northwest titles. Clackamas proudly represents the best in Oregon athletics, competing
in the highly competitive Southern Region--a division entirely comprised of Oregon community colleges. As a full-time Clackamas student, you have the opportunity to participate in any of the sports available at Clackamas, including men's baseball,
women's softball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's track, women's volleyball, women's soccer, men's and
women's cross country, and wrestling. In keeping with the standards of the program, emphasis is put on academic progress as
well as athletic opportunity. Team travel, uniform s, and health insurance are provided.
Athletic Program Philosophy
Intercollegiate Athletics are a part of the comprehensive educational program offered by Clackamas Community College. They
are sanctioned by the Board and are expected to offer the same kind of general services that any other areas of the College
offers.
Athletics, whether individual or team sports, help students while they are in college and prepare them for life experiences. They are of value to individuals in terms of enhanced physical and mental well-being; enjoyment derived from participation; ambition and pride, which arise from sporting endeavor; and friendship and sharing, which often accompany participation
in sports. In addition, many individuals, while competing in athletics, increase their awareness of other available educational
program s.
It is possible that many doors will open to those who participate in Intercollegiate Athletics. Physical Education and
Health Instruction, Professional Athletics, Coaching, Training, Recreational Fields, Sports Writing or Broadcasting, and Promotion
or Publicity may be areas of interest to students who have participated in athletics at Clackamas Community College. They may
also use their community college experience to mature and improve before moving to a higher level of competition.
Along with services to individuals, a good athletic program also offers services to its school, community, and district.
The morale of an entire college and areas can be enhanced by performances in athletics. Public recognition of the services the
institution offers often comes through initial contact with student/athletes who represent the College.
Thus, athletics at Clackamas Community College are clearly within the total philosophy of the College and do provide
opportunities for many students to reach their desired goals.
GO COUGARS!
2006 MISSION STATEMENT
Passion precedes triumph, and the will to win takes dedication.
As Cougar volleyball players we take pride and show commitment in all that we do.
We strive to be the best athletes, students, and people we can be!
Through blood and sweat we will conquer the Southern Region together.
Our passion will lead us to the NWAACC championship and everyone will
remember the night they played the COUGARS.
As one we strive toward victory and as one we triumph…….
