Great Protection – The GAF-Elk Smart Choice® Shingle Limited Warranty
Congratulations! Thank you for purchasing shingles from GAF-Elk Corporation
(“GAF-Elk”), North America’s largest roofing manufacturer—your best and safest choice. While many factors can affect how long your shingles will last, this
Smart Choice® Shingle Limited Warranty covers your shingles in the unlikely
event that they contain a manufacturing defect. It provides great coverage that
is “non-prorated” during the crucial up-front period of your ownership (the
Smart Choice® Protection Period) with continued coverage for extended periods
of time afterwards.
Who Is Covered by This Limited Warranty
You are covered by this warranty if you live in the United States or Canada and are
the original property owner/consumer (i.e., not a builder or installer) or the first
subsequent owner if this warranty was properly transferred.
This Limited Warranty may be transferred only once. The second owner must
notify GAF-Elk in writing within 60 days after the property transfer for warranty
coverage to be transferred. (Other than this one transfer, this warranty may
not be transferred or assigned, directly or indirectly.) If the transfer takes place
within the Smart Choice® Protection Period, the second owner is entitled to the
same coverage as the original owner. If the transfer takes place afterwards, the
length of this warranty shall be reduced to the two-year period after ownership
changes. If there is a defect during this two-year period, GAF-Elk’s reimbursement to the second owner will be based only on the reasonable cost of replacement shingles, reduced by the amount of use that has been received from the
shingles from date of installation.
Manufacturing Defects: What Is Covered/Sole and Exclusive Remedy
GAF-Elk warrants that your roofing shingles will remain free from manufacturing
defects that (a) adversely affect their performance during the Smart Choice® Protection
Period or (b) cause leaks for the remainder of the warranty term. Note: Shingle blowoff/wind damage/failure to seal, and algae discoloration are covered separately below.
During the Smart Choice® Protection Period (see Table 2a), GAF-Elk will pay
you the full reasonable cost of labor to repair or re-cover any defective shingles
(excluding underlayments, metal work, or flashings) and will provide replacement shingles or the reasonable cost of obtaining replacement shingles, at
GAF-Elk’s option. GAF-Elk will not pay to tear off your shingles or to dispose
of them.
After the Smart Choice® Protection Period ends, labor will no longer be covered.
GAF-Elk’s contribution to you will be based on either providing you with replacement shingles or, at GAF-Elk’s choice, reimbursing you for the reasonable cost of
obtaining replacement shingles. The amount of shingles or the reimbursement
provided to you will be adjusted to reflect the use you have received from your
shingles, based on the number of months that have elapsed since the shingles
were installed. For shingles that carry a “lifetime” warranty term, the proration
factors in Table 1 will apply.

Wind Damage/Blow-Offs/Failure To Seal: What Is Covered/Sole and Exclusive
Remedy
This Limited Wind Warranty lasts for 10 years for all GAF-Elk Lifetime shingles
and 5 years on all other shingles, and is specifically conditioned on your shingles
being fastened strictly in accordance with GAF-Elk’s application instructions.
GAF-Elk warrants to you that your shingles will not fail to seal, blow off or sustain
damage from winds (including gusts) up to the maximum wind speed listed in
Table 2a after your shingles should have sealed but did not due to a manufacturing defect. If your shingles do blow off, experience wind damage, or fail to seal,
GAF-Elk’s contribution to you is for the reasonable costs of replacing the blownoff shingles (exclusive of underlayment, metal work, or flashings) and handsealing any unsealed shingles. GAF-Elk’s maximum liability under this paragraph
is to reimburse you for the cost of hand-sealing all of the shingles on your roof.
Note: All self-sealing shingles, including GAF-Elk’s, must be subjected to warm
sunlight for several days before they completely seal. Before sealing occurs,
shingles are vulnerable to blow-offs and wind damage. Shingles installed in
fall or winter may not seal until the following spring. Shingles which are not
exposed to direct sunlight or to adequate surface temperatures or that are not
fastened properly may never seal. Shingles that fail to seal or that blow off
under these circumstances result from the nature of self-sealing shingles, not
a manufacturing defect.
Algae Discoloration: What Is Covered/Sole and Exclusive Remedy
This StainGuard® Limited Warranty lasts for 10 years on all StainGuard® labeled
shingles. GAF-Elk warrants to you that blue-green algae (also known as cyanobacteria) will not cause a pronounced discoloration of your StainGuard® labeled
shingles. During the first year, if your StainGuard® labeled shingles do exhibit
a pronounced discoloration caused by blue-green algae, GAF-Elk’s contribution
will be either the reasonable cost of commercially cleaning your shingles or
Modification of Warranty
This Limited Warranty may not be changed or modified except in writing, signed
by an officer of GAF-Elk. No one (other than an officer of GAF-Elk) has authority
to assume any additional liability or responsibility for GAF-Elk in connection
with your shingles except as described in this warranty. This warranty gives you
specific legal rights, and you may have other rights which vary from jurisdiction
to jurisdiction. (NOTE: Warranty subject to change. For current information, visit
www.gaf.com or write to GAF-Elk at 1361 Alps Road, Wayne, NJ 07470 USA,
Attn: Warranty Service Department.)

replacing discolored shingles. During the remainder of the algae discoloration
coverage period, GAF-Elk’s contribution to you will be adjusted to reflect the use
you have received from your shingles, based on the number of months that have
elapsed since your shingles were installed. Note: Preventing pronounced algaerelated discoloration of your shingles is achieved through formulations or through
unique blends of granules.
Limitations on Coverage
Unlike some roofing product warranties, even if your shingles were not properly
installed according to GAF-Elk’s application instructions or to standard good
roofing practices, this Limited Warranty remains in effect. However, GAF-Elk
will NOT compensate you for:
(1) Damages resulting from anything other than an inherent manufacturing
defect in your shingles, such as:
(a) improper fastening of your shingles or application not in strict accordance with GAF-Elk’s printed application instructions, if the improper
installation was the cause of the damage.
(b) settlement, movement, or defects in the building, walls, foundation, or
the roof base over which the shingles were applied.
(c) inadequate attic ventilation.
(2)Damages resulting from causes beyond normal wear and tear such as:
(a) acts of nature such as hail, ice damming, or winds, including gusts, above
the maximum wind speed stated in Tables 2a and 2b.
(b) impact of foreign objects or traffic on the roof.
(c) improper storage or handling of shingles.
(3)Shading or variations in the color of your shingles or discoloration caused
by fungus, mold, lichen, algae (except for blue-green algae if your shingles
were labeled with the StainGuard® logo) or other contaminants, including
that caused by organic materials on the roof. (4)Labor costs, except as specifically provided for above, disposal costs, and
costs relating to underlayments, metal work, and flashings.
(5) Damage to the interior or exterior of any building, including, but not limited
to, mold growth.
Other Limitations and Conditions
Decisions as to the extent of repair, re-cover, or cleaning required, and the reasonable cost of such work, will be made solely by GAF-Elk. GAF-Elk reserves the
right to arrange directly for your shingles to be repaired, recovered, or cleaned
instead of reimbursing you for such work. The remedy under this warranty
is available only for those shingles actually exhibiting manufacturing defects
or algae discoloration at the time that your claim is settled. Any replacement
shingles will be warranted only for the remainder of the original warranty period.
GAF-Elk reserves the right to discontinue or modify its shingles, including the
colors available, so any replacement shingles may not be an exact match for
the shingles on your roof. Even if GAF-Elk does not modify a color, replacement shingles may not match your original shingles due to normal weathering,
manufacturing variations, or other factors.
Claims: What You Must Do
To file a claim, you must send a notice in writing, together with proof of purchase
to establish that you are the original owner (or proof of transfer if the second
owner has properly transferred coverage), and proof of application date to: GAFElk, Warranty Service Department, 1361 Alps Road, Wayne, New Jersey 07470,
USA, within 30 days after your discovery of the alleged defect. NOTE: Notice
to your contractor, dealer, or home builder is NOT notice to GAF-Elk. Within a
reasonable time after proper notification, GAF-Elk will evaluate your claim and
resolve it in accordance with this warranty. GAF-Elk may require you to submit, at
your expense, sample shingles for testing and photographs. You should have this
warranty certificate signed and dated by your contractor, dealer, or home builder
to help establish proof of purchase and related information. You should retain this
warranty for your records in the event that you need to file a claim.
Sole and Exclusive Warranty
THIS WARRANTY IS EXCLUSIVE AND REPLACES ALL OTHER WARRANTIES,
CONDITIONS, REPRESENTATIONS, AND GUARANTEES, WHETHER EXPRESS
OR IMPLIED, WHETHER BY STATUTE, AT LAW OR IN EQUITY, INCLUDING
THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A
PARTICULAR PURPOSE. This written warranty is your exclusive warranty from
GAF-Elk and represents the SOLE REMEDY available to any owner of GAFElk shingles. GAF-Elk makes NO OTHER REPRESENTATIONS, CONDITION,
GUARANTEE, OR WARRANTY of any kind other than that stated herein. GAFELK WILL NOT BE LIABLE IN ANY EVENT FOR CONSEQUENTIAL, PUNITIVE,
SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR OTHER SIMILAR DAMAGES OF ANY KIND, including DAMAGE TO THE INTERIOR OR EXTERIOR OF ANY BUILDING, whether for
breach of this warranty, negligence, strict liability in tort, or for any other cause.
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above exclusions or limitations may not apply to you.

that your Weather Stopper® System Plus Ltd. Warranty has been registered. Your notification letter will confirm
which Weather Stopper® products have been installed on your roof.
If you have not received your notification letter from GAF-Elk within 60 days after installation,
please contact your Installer to confirm that your paperwork has been submitted to GAF-Elk. If your
Installer has submitted your paperwork, but you have not received your notification letter from GAF-Elk within
60 days, call GAF-Elk at 1-888-532-5767, option 1, to confirm that GAF-Elk has received your paperwork.
Your System Plus Ltd. Warranty will NOT be in effect until you receive written confirmation from GAF-Elk.
Note: If you are purchasing a newly constructed home and your Installer is a GAF-Elk Authorized Home
Builder who has already registered this warranty with GAF-Elk, you must notify GAF-Elk in writing within 60
days after taking title to the property in order for coverage to be transferred to you.

coverage begins when your Weather Stopper products are installed.
For a newly constructed home built by a GAF-Elk Authorized Home
Builder, coverage begins when you take title to the property (see
Transferability section below). Coverage against manufacturing defects
in your Weather Stopper® products (except for Master Flow® products
and GAF-Elk accessory paint) extends to the end of the warranty term
stated below based on the shingle you install. For Master Flow® ventilation, the warranty term for manufacturing defects is 15 years (except
motors and electronic components, which have 5-year coverage).
(Note: Some Master Flow® products may have extended coverage
under the standard Master Flow® Ltd.Warranty.) For GAF-Elk accessory paint, the warranty term for manufacturing defects is one year.
Coverage for wind damage or the failure of your shingles to seal
extends for the first 10 years on Lifetime shingles and the first 5 years
on all other shingles after application. Algae discoloration (if applicable)
is covered for the first ten years after application. Note: If cut-up GAFElk strip shingles are used instead of Timbertex, Ridglass, or other eligible ridge cap product, the warranty term and Smart Choice®
Protection Period for the cut-up strip shingles is as shown for that shingle below (i.e., it does NOT assume the warranty term for the shingles
used in the field of the roof).

year Smart Choice® protection period applies only to single family
detached residences; for all other structures, Smart Choice® protection
period is 20 years. The Smart Choice® protection period for Master
Flow® ventilation is 15 years (except motors and electronic components, which have 5-year coverage). The Smart Choice® Protection
Period for accessory paint is 1 year.
*Maximum wind speed applies only when shingles are installed using
six nails per shingle and certain GAF-Elk starter strip products (only
those with factory-applied adhesive) are installed at the eaves and
rakes. Shingles must be installed in strict accordance with application
instructions, particularly in regard to nail placement. Otherwise, wind
coverage reverts to Standard Wind Speed.
**Available only in Canada.
Limited Warranty. GAF-Elk warrants to you, the registered owner
of covered Weather Stopper® products, that GAF-Elk will compensate you if:
(1) Your Weather Stopper® products do not remain free from manufacturing defects that adversely affect their performance for the
warranty term stated above, or
(2) Your Weather Stopper® products are damaged by winds up to
the applicable wind speed (including gusts) listed above during the
first 10 years when Lifetime shingles are installed (or the first 5
years when other shingles are installed), provided that thermal
sealing of your shingles has occurred and your shingles have been
fastened strictly in accordance with GAF-Elk’s application instructions (particularly in regard to nail placement), or your shingles fail
to seal due to a manufacturing defect, or
(3) Blue-green algae (also known as cyanobacteria) causes a
pronounced discoloration of your StainGuard® labeled shingles during the first 10 years, if you purchased StainGuard® labeled shingles.
Note: Preventing the pronounced algae-related discoloration of your
shingles is achieved through formulations or through unique blends
of granules.
Exclusive Remedies. Your exclusive remedy for any covered
Weather Stopper® product that does not perform as stated above is:
(1) For Manufacturing Defects.
(a) During the Smart Choice® Protection Period, GAF-Elk will pay
you the full reasonable cost of labor ($25 maximum for accessory paint) to repair or recover any part of your Weather
Stopper® products that is found to have a manufacturing defect
that affects performance, and will provide replacement Weather
Stopper® products. The costs of labor to tear off some or all of
your GAF-Elk Weather Stopper® System are included, if necessary, to repair your roof. GAF-Elk will not pay costs to dispose
of any roof products. Note: Shingle blow-offs/wind damage/failure to seal and algae discoloration are covered separately
below.
(b) After the Smart Choice® Protection Period, the repair or recover cost which GAF-Elk will pay, and the roof products to be provided, will be reduced to reflect the amount of use you have
received from your roof. The amount of use will be calculated
by dividing the number of months which have elapsed since
installation by the number of months in the warranty term. For
shingles that carry a warranty term of “Lifetime,” and which are
installed on single family detached residences, the prorated
value of your Weather Stopper® products after 50 years will be
10%. For shingles that carry a warranty term of “Lifetime,” and
which are installed on structures other than single family
detached residences, the following proration factors will apply
to your Weather Stopper® products:

(2) For Wind Damage/Blow-Offs/Failure To Seal: (10 year coverage
when Lifetime shingles are installed, 5 year coverage when other shingles are installed).
If your Weather Stopper® products do blow off, experience wind
damage, or your shingles fail to seal, GAF-Elk’s contribution to you
is for the reasonable costs of replacing the blown-off products
(exclusive of metal work or flashings) and hand-sealing any
unsealed shingles. GAF-Elk’s maximum liability under this
paragraph is to reimburse you for the cost of hand-sealing all of
the shingles on your roof.
Note: All self-sealing shingles, including GAF-Elk’s, must be subjected to warm sunlight for several days before full thermal sealing can occur. Shingles installed in fall or winter may not seal
until the following spring. Shingles which are not exposed to
direct sunlight or to adequate surface temperatures or are not
fastened properly may never seal. Failure to seal or shingles that
blow off under these circumstances result from the nature of
self-sealing shingles, not a manufacturing defect.
(3) For Algae Discoloration (10 year coverage if you purchased shingles
labeled with the StainGuard® logo).
(a) If your shingles have been applied for less than one year,
GAF-Elk’s contribution will be either the cost of cleaning your
shingles or the cost to repair or recover your shingles, as
described above, up to a maximum of the original installed cost
of the affected shingles.
(b) For the next nine years, GAF-Elk’s contribution will be based
on the reasonable cost of replacement shingles, adjusted to
reflect the amount of use you have received from your shingles.
Decisions as to the extent of repair, recover or cleaning required,
and the reasonable cost of such work, will be made solely by
GAF-Elk. GAF-Elk reserves the right to arrange directly for your roof
products to be repaired, recovered or cleaned instead of reimbursing you for such work. The remedy under this warranty is available
only for those Weather Stopper® products actually exhibiting
manufacturing defects or blue-green algae growth at the time of
settlement. Any replacement Weather Stopper® products will be
warranted only for the remainder of the original warranty period.
GAF-Elk reserves the right to discontinue or modify its shingles,
including the colors available, so any replacement shingles may not
be an exact match for the shingles on your roof. Even if GAF-Elk
does not modify a color, replacement shingles may not match your
original shingles due to normal weathering, manufacturing variations, or other factors.
Transferability; Remedy for New Owner. This limited warranty may be transferred only once. The second owner must notify
GAF-Elk in writing within 60 days after the property transfer has
occurred for any coverage to be transferred. (Other than this one
transfer, this warranty may not be transferred or assigned, directly
or indirectly.) Note: If this warranty is initially registered by a GAFElk Authorized™ Home Builder, the buyer of the home must notify
GAF-Elk in writing within 60 days of taking title to the property for
coverage to be transferred. For the purposes of transferability, the
home buyer will be considered the first owner under this warranty.
If the transfer takes place within the first 12 years after installation,
the second owner shall be entitled to all benefits contained in this
warranty. If the transfer takes place after the first 12 years after
application, the length of this warranty shall be reduced to the twoyear period after ownership changes. During this two-year period,
GAF-Elk’s reimbursement to the second owner will be based only
on the reasonable cost of replacement Weather Stopper® products,
reduced by the amount of use that has been received from your
Weather Stopper® products from date of installation.
Limitations on Coverage. Even if your roofing system was not
properly installed according to GAF-Elk’s application instructions, this
limited warranty remains in effect if your Weather Stopper® products
exhibit manufacturing defects, wind damage, or algae discoloration (if
applicable). However, GAF-Elk will NOT compensate you for:
(1) Damage to your Weather Stopper® products resulting from anything other than an inherent manufacturing defect in your Weather
Stopper® products, such as:
(a) improper fastening of your shingles or application of
your Weather Stopper® products not in strict accordance with
GAF-Elk’s printed application instructions.
(b) settlement, movement or defects in the building, walls, foundation or the roof base over which your roof system was applied.
(c) inadequate attic ventilation.
(2) Damage to your Weather Stopper® products resulting from causes
beyond normal wear and tear such as:
(a) acts of nature, such as hail or winds/gusts over the applicable wind speed listed above, or ice damming above the area
covered by GAF-Elk’s leak barriers or above flashings.
(b) impact of foreign objects or traffic on the roof.
(c) improper storage or handling of any Weather Stopper® products.
(3) Shading or variations in the color of your shingles, or discoloration or contamination caused by fungus, algae (unless your shingles were labeled with the StainGuard® logo) or other contaminants,
including that caused by organic materials on the roof.
(4) Chipping, fading, or peeling paint on Master Flow® ventilation
products.
(5) Labor costs, except as specifically provided for above, disposal
costs, and costs relating to metal work, flashings, or non-GAF-Elk
products.
(6) Damage to the interior or exterior of any building, including, but
not limited to, mold growth.

was registered to you (or proof of transfer if the second owner has
properly transferred coverage), to: GAF-Elk, Warranty Service
Department, 1361 Alps Road, Wayne, New Jersey 07470, within 30
days after your discovery of the alleged claim. NOTE: Notice to your
installer, dealer, or home builder is NOT notice to GAF-Elk. Within a
reasonable time after proper notification, GAF-Elk will evaluate your
claim and resolve it in accordance with the terms of this Warranty. GAFElk may require you to submit, at your expense, sample roof products
for testing and photographs.
Sole and Exclusive Warranty. THIS WARRANTY IS EXCLUSIVE
AND REPLACES ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, CONDITIONS, REPRESENTATIONS, AND GUARANTEES, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED,
WHETHER BY STATUTE, AT LAW OR IN EQUITY, INCLUDING THE
IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A
PARTICULAR PURPOSE. This written warranty is your exclusive warranty from GAF-Elk Corporation and represents the SOLE REMEDY
available to any owner of GAF-Elk’s Weather Stopper® products.
GAF-Elk makes NO OTHER REPRESENTATIONS, CONDITION, GUARANTEE, OR WARRANTY of any kind other than that stated herein.
GAF-ELK WILL NOT BE LIABLE IN ANY EVENT FOR CONSEQUENTIAL,
PUNITIVE, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR OTHER SIMILAR DAMAGES OF
ANY KIND, including DAMAGE TO THE INTERIOR OR EXTERIOR OF
ANY BUILDING, whether for breach of this warranty, negligence, strict
liability in tort, or for any other cause. Some jurisdictions do not allow
the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages so
the above exclusions or limitations may not apply to you.
Modification of Warranty. This limited warranty may not be
changed or modified except in writing, signed by an officer of GAFElk. No one (other than an officer of GAF-Elk) has authority to assume
any additional liability or responsibility for GAF-Elk in connection with
your Weather Stopper® products except as described in this warranty. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may have
other rights which vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.
Effectiveness: This limited warranty will not take effect unless
all eligibility requirements have been satisfied and your roofing
contractor has been paid in full.

*Review ltd. warranty (at right) for complete coverage and restrictions. Also note:
• 50 year coverage period for “Lifetime” shingles applies only to single family detached residences; for all other structures, coverage period is 20 years.
• Installer certification is related only to installations covered by GAF-Elk system warranties.
• Maximum wind coverage requires special installation.
Master Flow® ventilation products, the warranty term for
manufacturing defects is 20 years (except motors and electronic components,® which have 5-year coverage). (Note:
Some Master Flow products may have extended coverage
under the standard Master Flow® ltd. warranty.) For GAF-Elk
accessory paint, the warranty term for manufacturing
defects is one year.
*Maximum Wind Speed applies only when shingles are
installed using six nails per shingle and certain GAF-Elk
starter strip products (only those with factory-applied
adhesive) are installed at the eaves and rakes. Shingles
must be installed in strict accordance with application
instructions, particularly in regard to nail placement.
Otherwise, wind coverage reverts to Standard Wind
Speed.
**Available only in Canada.
Limited Warranty. GAF-Elk warrants to you, the registered owner of a Weather Stopper® Roof System, that
GAF-Elk will compensate you in accordance with this warranty if:
(1) Your GAF-Elk Weather Stopper® System does not
remain free from manufacturing defects for the warranty term stated above or there are application errors in
your Weather Stopper® System or Covered Flashings
that adversely affect their performance during the warranty term for application defects, or
(2) Your GAF-Elk Weather Stopper® System is damaged
by winds up to the applicable wind speed (including
gusts) listed above or your shingles fail to seal during
the first 15 years, or
(3) In the event that you purchased shingles with
StainGuard® Protection, blue-green algae (also known
as cyanobacteria) causes a pronounced discoloration of
your StainGuard® labeled shingles during the first 10
years. Note: Preventing the pronounced algae-related
discoloration of your shingles is achieved through formulations or through unique blends of granules.
Exclusive Remedies. Your exclusive remedy for any
part of your GAF-Elk Weather Stopper® System that
does not perform as stated above is:
(1)For Manufacturing Defects.
(a) Non-Prorated Period. The Non-Prorated Period
for your Weather Stopper® System depends on the
shingle installed. When “Lifetime” shingles are
installed, the Non-Prorated Period (except for Master
Flow® ventilation products and GAF-Elk accessory
paint) is the first 50 years after application for single
family detached residences (20 years for all other
structures); for all other shingles, the Non-Prorated
Period is the first 20 years.
For Master Flow® ventilation products, the NonProrated Period is 20 years (except for motors and
electronic components, which have 5-year coverage).
For GAF-Elk accessory paint, the Non-Prorated
Period is one year.
During the Non-Prorated Period, if any part of your
GAF-Elk Weather Stopper® System is found to have
a manufacturing defect, GAF-Elk will arrange to
have your roof repaired or recovered or, at its sole
option, will provide you with replacement roofing
products and reimburse you for the full reasonable
cost of labor ($25 maximum for accessory paint)
and other materials to repair or recover your roof,
including Covered Flashings. The costs of labor to
tear off some or all of your GAF-Elk Weather
Stopper® System and disposal are included, if
necessary to repair your roof.
Note: Shingle blow-offs/wind damage/failure to
seal and algae discoloration are covered separately below.
b) Subsequent Claims. After the Non-Prorated
Period, if there is a covered manufacturing defect,
the repair or recover cost which GAF-Elk will pay,
and the roofing products to be provided, will be
reduced to reflect the amount of use you have
received from your roof. The amount of use will be
calculated by dividing the number of months which
have elapsed since installation by the number of
months in the warranty term. For installations
where a “Lifetime” shingle has been installed on a
single family detached residence, the prorated value
of your Weather Stopper® System after 50 years will
be 10%. For installations where a “Lifetime” shingle has been installed on a structure other than a
single family detached residence, the following proration factors will apply to your Weather Stopper®
System:

After the Non-Prorated Period, GAF-Elk’s maximum liability for any roof shall NOT exceed three times the reasonable cost of replacement shingles before any reduction for use. GAF-Elk’s maximum liability for labor to
repair GAF-Elk accessory paint shall not exceed $25.
(2)For Misapplication.
If during the warranty term for misapplication any
part of your GAF-Elk Weather Stopper® System or
Covered Flashings is found to have application
errors that adversely affect their performance, GAFElk will arrange to have your roof repaired or recovered or, at its sole option, will provide you with
replacement roofing products and reimburse you for
the full reasonable cost of labor ($25 maximum for
GAF-Elk accessory paint) and other materials to
repair or recover your roof, including Covered
Flashings. The costs of labor to tear off some or
all of your GAF-Elk Weather Stopper® System
and disposal are included, if necessary to repair
your roof.
(3)For Wind Damage/Blow-Offs/Failure To Seal
(15 year coverage).
If your Weather Stopper® products do blow off, experience wind damage, or your shingles fail to seal,
GAF-Elk’s contribution to you is the reasonable costs
of replacing the blown-off products (exclusive of
metal work or flashings) and hand-sealing any
unsealed shingles. GAF-Elk’s maximum liability
under this paragraph is to reimburse you for the cost
of hand-sealing all of the shingles on your roof.
(4)For Algae Discoloration (10 year coverage if you
purchased shingles labeled with the StainGuard®
logo).
(a) If your shingles have been applied for less than
one year, GAF-Elk’s contribution will be either the
cost of cleaning your shingles or the cost to repair
or recover your discolored shingles, up to a maximum of the original installed cost of the affected
shingles.
(b) For the next 9 years, GAF-Elk’s contribution to you
will be based on the reasonable cost of replacement
shingles, adjusted to reflect the amount of use you
have received from your shingles.
Decisions as to the extent of repair, recover or cleaning
required, and the reasonable cost of such work will be
made solely by GAF-Elk. The remedy under this warranty is available only for those parts of your GAF-Elk
Weather Stopper® System actually exhibiting manufacturing defects, misapplication (including misapplication
of Covered Flashings) or blue-green algae growth at
the time of settlement. Any replacement GAF-Elk
Weather Stopper® products will be warranted only for
the remainder of the original warranty period. GAF-Elk
reserves the right to discontinue or modify its shingles,
including the colors available, so any replacement
shingles may not be an exact match for the shingles on
your roof. Even if GAF-Elk does not modify a color,
replacement shingles may not match your original
shingles due to normal weathering, manufacturing
variations, or other factors.
Transferability; Remedy for New Owner. This limited warranty may be transferred only once. The second owner must notify GAF-Elk in writing within 60 days
after the property transfer has occurred for any coverage
to be transferred. (Other than this one transfer, this warranty may not be transferred or assigned, directly or
indirectly.)
If the transfer takes place within the first 15 years
after application, the second owner shall be entitled to
all benefits contained in this warranty. If the transfer
takes place after the first 15 years after application,
the length of this warranty shall be reduced to the
two-year period after ownership changes. During this
two-year period, GAF-Elk’s reimbursement to the second owner will be based on the reasonable cost of
replacement Weather Stopper® products, reduced by
the amount of use that has been received from your
Weather Stopper® products from date of installation.
Limitations on Coverage. GAF-Elk will NOT be liable
for and this warranty does NOT apply to:
(1) Damage to your GAF-Elk Weather Stopper® System
resulting from anything other than an inherent manufacturing defect in the GAF-Elk Weather Stopper®
System products on your roof, their misapplication or
their failure to seal, or the misapplication of
Covered Flashings, such as:
(a) inadequate attic ventilation.
(b) settlement, movement, or defects in the building, walls, foundation or the roof base over which
your roof system was applied.
(2) Damage to your GAF-Elk Weather Stopper® System
resulting from causes beyond normal wear and tear
such as:
(a) acts of nature, such as hail, winds (or gusts)
over the applicable wind speed listed above, or ice
damming above the area covered by leak barriers
or above flashings.
(b) impact of foreign objects or traffic on the roof.
(c) improper storage or handling of any roofing products.
(3) Shading or variations in the color of your shingles,
or discoloration caused by fungus, mold, lichen, algae
(except for blue-green algae if your shingles were
labeled with the StainGuard® logo) or other contaminants, including that caused by organic materials on
the roof.
(4) Chipping, fading, or peeling paint on Master Flow®
ventilation products.
(5) Damages caused by, or the cost to repair or replace,
products not supplied by GAF-Elk, including, but not
limited to, counter flashing, or GAF-Elk products not
specifically included above.
(6) Improperly designed or installed gutter or down-
spout systems.
(7) Damage to the interior or exterior of any
building, including, but not limited to, mold
growth.
(8) Damage to or caused by rooftop air conditioning units (and their flashing), pipe works,
brace works, rooftop satellite dishes or other
radio/tv devices, counter flashing, or flashings
other than those specifically included above.
Claims: What You Must Do. To file a claim,
including during the first two years, you must
send a notice in writing, together with proof
that this warranty was registered to you (and
proof of transfer if the second owner has properly transferred coverage), to: GAF-Elk,
Warranty Service Department, 1361 Alps
Road, Wayne, New Jersey 07470, within 30
days after your discovery of the alleged claim.
NOTE: Notice to your contractor or dealer is
NOT notice to GAF-Elk. Within a reasonable
time after proper notification, GAF-Elk will
evaluate your claim and resolve it in accordance with the terms of this warranty. GAF-Elk
may require you to submit, at your expense,
sample roofing products for testing and photographs. You should retain this certificate for
your records in the event you need to file a
claim.
Sole and Exclusive Warranty. THIS WARRANTY IS EXCLUSIVE AND REPLACES ALL
OTHER WARRANTIES, CONDITIONS, REPRESENTATIONS, AND GUARANTEES, WHETHER
EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, WHETHER BY STATUTE,
AT LAW OR IN EQUITY, INCLUDING THE
IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY
AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
This written warranty is your exclusive warranty from GAF-Elk Corporation and represents the SOLE REMEDY available to any
owner of GAF-Elk’s Weather Stopper® products. GAF-Elk makes NO OTHER REPRESENTATIONS, CONDITION, GUARANTEE, OR WARRANTY of any kind other than that stated herein. GAF-ELK WILL NOT BE LIABLE IN ANY
EVENT FOR CONSEQUENTIAL, PUNITIVE, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR OTHER SIMILAR DAMAGES OF ANY KIND, including DAMAGE TO THE
INTERIOR OR EXTERIOR OF ANY BUILDING,
whether for breach of this warranty, negligence, strict liability in tort, or for any other
cause. Some jurisdictions do not allow the
exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages so the above exclusions or
limitations may not apply to you.
Modification of Warranty. This limited warranty may not be changed or modified except in
writing, signed by an officer of GAF-Elk. No one
(other than an officer of GAF-Elk) has authority
to assume any additional liability or responsibility for GAF-Elk in connection with your Weather
Stopper® products except as described in this
warranty. This warranty gives you specific legal
rights, and you may have other rights which
vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.
Special Note: First Two Years. If your claim
arises out of an application error in your
Weather Stopper System or Covered
Flashings, which is discovered or discoverable
within the first two years after installation, it
is the obligation of your Master Elite™ roofing
contractor to make all necessary repairs. In
the event that your Master Elite roofing contractor is unable or unwilling to perform these
repairs, GAF-Elk will arrange to have your roof
repaired.
Special Note: Ventilation/Flashings. Due to
the design of certain buildings, installation of
minimum adequate ventilation or the replacement of existing flashings may be difficult,
costly, or impractical. Please be sure to
review these items with your roofing contractor.
Effectiveness: This limited warranty will not
take effect unless all eligibility requirements
have been satisfied and your roofing contractor has been paid in full.

Application Form
Ltd. Warranty
Application Form
To be eligible for the Golden Pledge® Ltd. Warranty, you MUST fulfill these requirements:
1. You MUST install a full roof; roofs installed on portions of buildings (such as half a roof
on a duplex structure) do not qualify.
2. Your roof MUST be installed by a GAF-Elk Master Elite™ Roofing Contractor.
3. The roof system must NOT be installed over an existing roof—all existing materials must be
removed to the deck.
4. You MUST use GAF-Elk Deck-Armor™or Shingle-Mate® Roof Deck Protection. Note: If eligible
products are not available, you may substitute any #30 ASTM D4869 felt or any #15 or #30
ASTM D226 felt.
5. You MUST use GAF-Elk Weather Watch®, StormGuard®, or
Leak Barrier Usage Map
UnderRoof ™2 Leak Barrier in valleys and around dormers,
side walls, firewalls, chimneys, plumbing vents, and skylights.
In addition, in the North (see map), Weather Watch® or
StormGuard® Leak Barrier must also be used at all eaves to at
least 24" inside of the warm wall. Weather Watch® or
StormGuard® products are highly recommended (but not
required) at all roof rakes and other vulnerable leak areas.
6. You MUST use certain GAF-Elk pre-cut starter strip products (only those with factoryapplied adhesive) at the eaves. Note: To obtain maximum wind coverage, you must
use GAF-Elk pre-cut starter strip products (with factory-applied adhesive) at the eaves
and rakes and you must install each shingle using 6 nails.
7. You MUST use COBRA® ridge ventilation with adequate intake ventilation.
(Note: GAF-Elk Master Flow® exhaust ventilation products can be substituted ONLY if COBRA®
ridge ventilation cannot be installed due to a structure’s architecture, e.g., post and beam
construction, shed roofs, etc.) In any event, ventilation should meet the following standards:
Minimum net free ventilation area of 1 sq. foot/meter per 150 sq. feet/meter of ceiling area is required. When
intake vents are located at the eaves and exhaust vents are located near the roof’s peak (in a properly balanced
system) for maximum air flow, ventilation may be reduced to 1 sq. foot/meter per 300 sq. feet/meter.
8. You MUST use eligible GAF-Elk roofing shingles (see Application Form at right for eligible products).
9. You MUST use GAF-Elk ridge cap shingles (see Application Form at right for eligible products) or
