DRITTO: Mesi da gennaio a giugno: immagini tratte dal fregio di
Beethoven; sulla destra un cavaliere a simbolo dell’eroica virtù
dell’arte come mezzo di raggiungimento di gioia; il percorso del
cavaliere è ostacolato da forze avverse simboleggiate dalle tre
figure femminili delle Gorgoni. La tensione suscitata dalle forze
ostili è trasmessa dal segno smaltato di rosso
OBVERSE: Months from January to June: images drawn from the
Beethoven frieze; on the right a knight who is a symbol of the
heroic virtue of art as a way of achieving joy; the knight’s progress
is being hindered by hostile forces which are symbolized by three
female figures, the Gorgons. The tension stirred up by the hostile
forces is expressed and conveyed by the red enamel element.
ROVESCIO: Mesi da luglio a dicembre: immagini tratte dal fregio
di Beethoven, all’elemento maschile del dritto corrisponde la figura
femminile della Poesia che suona una lira; le figure sulla destra
esprimono il raggiungimento della gioia ove ogni nota dolente si
placa in un abbraccio con la Poesia. Il piano orizzontale smaltato in
giallo nel campo della medaglia, richiama come su un
pentagramma il movimento di una musica che accompagna gli
amanti abbracciati.
REVERSE: Months from July to December: images drawn from the
Beethoven frieze; the female figure of Poetry playing a lyre
corresponds to the male element on the obverse; the figures on the
right represent the achievement of joy, when any sorrow calms
down in an embrace with Poetry. Just like a pentagram, the yellow
enamel horizontal surface on the medal’s field recalls the musical
movement accompanying the embracing lovers.
