Fostering Top-Notch
Craftsmanship
They have clad pavilions, parapets and spiral towers in roofing
materials that perfectly match colonial style but perform to high,
modern standards. They have completed meticulous renovations of
iconic buildings; installed modern curtain walls on a building with
parabolic curves; and engineered stairways stretching up through a
soaring, 12-story atrium.
They are the winners of the Building Congress & Exchange 2013
Craftsmanship Awards. Their project work exemplifies some of the
finest skills exercised in this region’s construction industry. It also
demonstrates the results of many companies’ efforts to develop highquality craftsmanship among their employees.
Hancock & Albanese’s Thomas Pohuski was among the high-quality
craftsmen honored at the annual awards ceremony on Nov. 1. Pohuski
won a Craftsmanship Award for his wood floor treads and wood railings
at the University of Baltimore’s John & Frances Angelos Law Center.
The firm was tasked with erecting stairs up through the building’s
open,12-story atrium. Employees — including Pohuski — spent four
months refining designs, creating mock-ups, building jigs, planning
installation and assembling a mobile, millwork shop onsite.
“He would go to sleep at night trying to figure out how to make some
detail work,” said Cherelle Reno, operations manager at Hancock &
Albanese.“He would wake up in the middle of the night and I would
get these text messages saying, ‘I got it!’ or ‘I can’t sleep. I’m trying
to figure out how to make the radius handrail connection to the steel
handrail.’”
Like many firms, Hancock & Albanese has embraced several
practices to support that commitment to quality. Actively involved with
several technical high schools, the company has hired promising
graduates and put its junior employees through an internal training
and mentoring program. Initially, new staff spend half their time in
the office learning the language of the construction industry, how to
read drawings and project planning, and half their time in the field
learning from experienced staff members. A mentoring process guides
employees through progressively more challenging work for 10 years
or more.
Lewis Contractors, the general contractor on five projects where
craftsmen won BC&E Craftsmanship Awards, operates a similar
mentoring program for its carpenters, junior superintendents and
others. The process both fosters growth among junior staff and triggers
“a feedback loop” that helps veteran staff learn about new technologies
and new perspectives on construction, said President Tyler Tate.

COVER STORY
“Every successful general contractor and construction manager knows that
you are only as good as the people who work here and the subcontractors you
work with,”Tate said.“So we build people here.”
At Ruff Roofers, President Timothy Caldwell knows that fostering an expert
workforce is one challenge. Keeping those workers motivated and committed
to the company is another.
Consequently, Ruff Roofers has focused on building a challenging specialty
— historic renovations. The company doesn’t handle the basic warehouse
jobs.“If we did that, they would be bored to tears,” Caldwell said.“Instead we
go after historic projects with very difficult details, difficult access, goofy stuff
that wasn’t built with ideal roofing applications in the first place.”
Ruff Roofers’ Vern Quesenberry won two 2013 Craftsmanship Awards for
his roofing work at Towson University’s Newell and Richmond Hall and the
Terne Metal Roof Replacement at the Union Square Park.
Peter Cornellier, vice president of TSI Exterior Wall Systems, has embraced
a ‘love the challenge’ approach to the work of installing curtain walls and
other modern exteriors in part by expanding into design-assist services.
The process of helping architects and general contractors work out design
details requires TSI staff to “analyze the system’s quality and materials,
waterproofing, detailing, pricing, construct-ability and other aspects,”
Cornellier said.“Seven or eight years ago, our estimators would have looked

at you like you had three heads if you asked those questions. But now, the field
guys enjoy having some input before the project gets going.”
TSI’s James Eshelman won a 2013 Craftsmanship Award for the curtain
wall at Johns Hopkins University’s Teaching Labs at the Homewood Campus.
Seeking out professional challenges and supporting a culture of constant
learning fosters top-quality employees, but it also generates other benefits,
Cornellier and others said. Such companies, they note, often quickly adapt to
market trends and new technologies, cultivate valuable specialities, gain loyal
clients and discover that talented staff stay with them for decades.

Inspiring Students
For a would-be mason, carpenter, plumber or engineer, the Future
Craftsmanship and Design Awards can provide the confidence boost that
convinces teenagers to take that daunting step past the classroom and
tackle professional training and a construction industry job.
“This is inspiration
at its finest,” said
Michael Svezzese,
Jr., construction/
carpentry instructor
at Harford Technical
High School.
Svezzese was
sitting with Zachary
Burnham, a Harford
senior and 2013
Future Craftsmanship
and Design winner, at
the awards ceremony
“when a gentleman
came up and gave
Zach his business
card,” Svezzese said.
“Zach was on cloud

like that before.”
The excitement continued the following Monday morning when the
school announcements included news of the award and numerous
students congratulated Burnham.
Instructors at the region’s technical high schools say the BC&E
Foundation’s Future Craftsmanship and Design Awards do more than
provide a financial boost to students. They provide teens with motivation
to pursue careers in the construction industry, and that motivation
spreads well beyond the winners to their classmates and younger
students.
At Eastern Technical High School in Baltimore County, teacher
Peter Glaudemans said the awards “provide that additional boost of
confidence that is so critical for kids who are trying to make the almost
impossible decision of what to do when they get out of high school.
It’s so daunting and kids tend to second-guess themselves. The Future
8 the exchange – november/december 2013
Craftsman Awards are a great way to recognize kids for having some
exceptional talents and it helps them realize they are capable of very
high levels of educational growth down the road.”
At Carroll County Career and Technology Center, Principal Bill Eckles
said the fact that construction professionals selected the winners has a
special impact on students.
“For students, it’s one thing to get an honor from the school. It’s another
thing entirely to get an honor from somebody who is in the real world, in
the industry and recognizes your accomplishments,” Eckles said.
Those honors and the message that students can earn a good living
in construction are especially important in the current economy, Eckles
said.
“The economic downturn and the subsequent fall off in construction
work really hurt the numbers of students in our construction
programs,” he said.“I think a lot of parents were fearful that there
wouldn’t be jobs so they didn’t encourage their kids to go into the
construction programs.”

Mechanical contractors
blend new technologies with
old business practices to
thrive in tough economy
The most sophisticated planning processes and 3D modeling technologies
simply couldn’t divine a master plan to install a new aquatic life support
system amid the warren of piping and narrow passages at Baltimore’s National
Aquarium. Creating that vital system for the aquarium’s new blacktip reef
would require staff at J.F. Fischer, Inc. to exercise different skills. To complete
the installation, a J.F. Fischer foreman would have to plan, sketch, design, cut
and custom fabricate each piece of piping in the field.
That level of skill earned J.F. Fischer Foreman George Hoffert a 2013
Craftsmanship Award and further solidified J.F. Fischer’s reputation as a
mechanical contractor capable of mastering uniquely complex jobs.
Thriving as a mechanical contractor in the current, tough market
requires that kind of skill. Mechanical contractors also must master new
technologies quickly, adapt to shrinking construction schedules and sustain
robust marketing efforts, according to several BC&E members.
“The market has been more competitive with more bidders in the past
few years, so you have to get more aggressive, adapt to market changes
and find more efficient ways to perform the work,” said Daniel Fischer,
Vice President of J.F. Fischer.
J.F. Fischer, which remained sucessful throughout the recession and
slow recovery, succeeded in part by enabling skilled employees to master
new technologies and construction challenges, Fischer said.
Fischer points to the company’s work on the University of Baltimore
John & Frances Angelos Law Center which also earned employee Robert
Lancaster a Craftsmanship Award. As a LEED Platinum project, the center
was a rare construction project and combined multiple, high-efficiency
technologies in a single building.
At Rommel Cranston Construction, LLC, Vice President Chip Horn
decided the company needed to master a new technology, namely
Building Information Modeling (BIM), in order to grow in a challenging
market. By investing in hardware, software and two full-time BIM
professionals, Rommel Cranston developed a valuable in-house
capability that it could market to clients, Horn said.
It also developed the ability to “create fabrication drawings,
prefabricate a lot of pieces in our own shop and send them out to the
job site as an erector set,” Horn said.
Rommel Cranston, for example, can prefabricate complete
mechanical systems for multi-stall washrooms while also achieving
tighter quality controls. Working with the prefab units, crews can
completely install large washrooms in institutional buildings within
four hours as opposed to the four days required previously for such
installations.
However, the company, which was created through the asset purchase
of L.H. Cranston in September 2011, has also greatly benefited from
some old-school business techniques including increased marketing
and networking efforts.
Determined to quickly create a good reputation for the company, Horn
directed Rommel Cranston executives, project managers and estimators
to actively participate in key industry associations, including BC&E.
Horn and other Rommel Cranston officials made presentations to
executives at general contractors and held open houses to show that
Rommel Cranston “wasn’t some mom and pop shop, but a company with
ample infrastructure to support great work in the field,” he said.
And that great work earned Rommel Cranston’s Eric Zaranski a 2013
Craftsmanship Award for his mechanical work at the UMBC Performing
Arts & Humanity Facility.
Horn said Rommel Cranston has posted business volume growth of 10
to 15 percent annually since 2011, has gradually rebuilt its staff and
even hired 25 new apprentices in the last six months.

Lewis Contractors lands new Baltimore projects
Lewis Contractors, a construction management and general contracting
firm based in Owings Mills, will restore the Washington Monument
at Mount Vernon Place in Baltimore. Work is set to begin on the
nearly 200-year-old structure in January 2014 and is scheduled for
completion by July 4, 2015.
The firm also broke ground on the new 10,000-square-foot Parks
& People Foundation headquarters in Druid Hill Park. The building
will include an ecology center, lab space for scientific research,
environmental education, job training and career development.
Construction of the facility is slated to take 12 months. Lewis is
completing final touches to the project’s first phase, which included
the 4,400-square-foot restoration and rehabilitation of the historic
Superintendent’s house at Druid Hill Park.
Lewis Contractors has touched over a dozen Baltimore landmarks
on the National Registry of Historic Places. Some of its most notable
restoration projects include landmarks such as the Baltimore Basilica
of the Assumption, Everyman Theatre, Davidge Hall and the Sheppard
Pratt gatehouse.
